TNJFU marks 24th Foundation Day with farmers' festival and expo in Nagapattinam

Tamil Nadu Dr. J. Jayalalithaa Fisheries University (TNJFU) celebrated its 24th Foundation Day on Wednesday with a vibrant Farmers' Festival, technical seminar, and exhibition at its Nagapattinam campus. The event was jointly organised with the Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Sikkal. Vice-Chancellor N. Felix, who presided over the function, outlined the university's growing presence across 15 districts through its network of colleges, research centres, aquaculture parks, and training institutes. He emphasised TNJFU's sustained commitment to empowering farmers through capacity-building in fish culture methods such as GIFT tilapia, ayirai, murrel, ornamental fish, and feed production. Shaik N. Meera, Director, ICAR–ATARI (Hyderabad), inaugurated the exhibition and delivered the special address. Stressing the need to integrate fisheries into climate-resilient farming, he urged the development of an AI-enabled mobile application and a 10-year strategic roadmap for the fisheries sector. He also announced a ₹50 lakh grant for establishing a fish feed production unit. Over 175 farmers, women entrepreneurs, and rural producers participated in the festival. Technical sessions were conducted by experts from various institutions, and inputs such as fish fingerlings, chicks, and goat kids were distributed to beneficiaries. A. Gopala Kannan, Programme Coordinator, KVK Sikkal, and P. Padmavathy, Director of Extension Education, TNJFU, were also present.
