Mango trader dies of heart attack amid price crash in Kolar
Bengaluru: Mohammed Shafiulla (55), a prominent mango trader and owner of Taj Mango Mandi in Srinivasapur, Kolar district, died of a heart attack at a farm in Thotli village on Monday.
Shafiulla had invested over Rs 30 lakh in advance payments to farmers in villages like Thotli and Rojenahalli and on inputs such as pesticides and labour. He had been personally overseeing mango harvesting when he collapsed after transporting a few tractor loads.
His nephew, Anees Ahmed, Secretary of the Mango Traders Association, said Shafiulla was deeply distressed over the steep fall in mango prices and had recently shared concerns that he might not recover even his input costs.
Anees urged the State Government to announce a support price for mangoes and provide compensation to Shafiulla's family, stating the tragedy could have been avoided with timely intervention.
Chinnappa Reddy, President of the Kolar District Mango Growers Welfare Association, echoed these concerns. He emphasized that both traders and farmers are suffering due to falling prices and urged the government to act immediately to stabilize the market and support those dependent on the mango trade.
