Beautiful Scots island owned by the same family for 80 years goes up for sale

A rare chance to buy a scenic Scottish island has just come up after decades in the same family An extraordinary opportunity has emerged off Scotland's wild west coast as the island of Shuna is listed for sale for the first time in 80 years. Held by the same family since the aftermath of the Second World War, the 1,110-acre estate is now being offered as a rare chance to own a private island steeped in history, beauty and boundless potential. It's listed for £5.5 million ($7.44 million) with Knight Frank. ‌ Shuna was bought in the late 1940s by Viscountess Selby in what has become family legend. Speaking to Bloomberg, Jim Gully, whose family has owned the island ever since, recalled: 'It's really been such a dream island and a huge part of all of our lives.' ‌ He added: 'They thought it was a fairly eccentric question. They had one island on the west coast of Scotland. So, she bought the island and moved the family up there.' According to Gully, his grandmother had walked into a London estate agent after the war asking if they had any islands on their books. 'It'd been a pretty traumatic time for lots of people and she was looking for a new start,' he said. Today, the island remains every bit as magical, a captivating mix of rugged coastline, secluded bays, scenic woodland and ancient landmarks. At its heart are the atmospheric ruins of Shuna Castle, a striking early 20th-century building with panoramic coastal views. Though partially collapsed, the site holds significant redevelopment potential, subject to planning. In total, Shuna boasts eight residential properties, each with their own unique setting. The Shuna Farmhouse, a Category B listed building dating from the 1740s, later replaced Castle Shuna as the island's principal residence. To the north, the Boat House and Pier House overlook tranquil Loch Shuna, offering an idyllic welcome point for guests arriving by boat. ‌ Scattered further inland are Birchwood, The Garden House, Oakwood Cottage and The Forge, all spaced to ensure privacy and positioned to maximise the stunning natural views. At the southern tip lies the picture-perfect South End House, nestled into the hillside above a private bay. Touted as one of Scotland's most scenic holiday homes, it offers a secluded retreat with sweeping sea vistas. Across all properties, the island can accommodate up to 52 guests, lending itself to multi-generational living, high-end hospitality or even a wellness destination. ‌ Shuna is a working estate with a strong agricultural foundation. In-hand livestock farming continues on the island, which also teems with wildlife. Red deer, fallow deer, eagles and porpoises are among the regular inhabitants, and country sports such as deer stalking have long been part of its traditions. Infrastructure is already in place to support modern sustainable living. A renewable energy system powers the island with photovoltaic panels, wind turbines, battery storage and back-up generators. ‌ Travel is also well accounted for, with a private pier, slipways, and even a helipad. Craobh Haven Marina and Arduaine Pier offer easy boat access, while helicopter flights connect to Glasgow and Islay airports, just 55 and 45 miles away. A single road runs through the heart of the island from the North Pier to South End House, winding past panoramic viewpoints, a walled garden and stretches of sand and rock-strewn shoreline. Nearby lies the Corryvreckan Whirlpool, one of the largest tidal whirlpools in the world, while the bustling port of Oban, known as the Gateway to the Isles, offers shops, schools, ferry links and eateries a short boat trip away. The village of Ardfern, even closer, provides a marina, café, local shop and tight-knit community spirit. Historically, Shuna has deep ties to the Stewarts of Appin. Records from the late 16th century note its ownership by John Stewart, the Laird of Appin. The original Castle Shuna, now a ruin at the island's southern end, is believed to have been built by the Stewarts as a small tower house. Directly across the loch sits Castle Stalker, another former Stewart stronghold, adding to the island's rich historical tapestry.

Jaundice outbreak reported from Muvattupuzha in Ernakulam district

Kochi: A major jaundice (Hepatitis A) outbreak is spreading in Avoly and nearby panchayats in Muvattupuzha, around 47km from the city. Since the first case was reported on May 30, as many as 51 primary cases were reported until Monday. Of the 51 cases, 21 are from Avoly. With the incubation period of Hepatitis A virus being two weeks to 45 days, health authorities expect more cases to surface in the coming days. Officials from district medical office visited Avoly on Monday and directed measures to contain the infection from spreading further. Hepatitis A is contracted from contaminated water or food. The source of the infection is suspected to be food served during a pre-wedding function at a house in Nadukkara, ninth ward of Avoly panchayat, on May 3. Around 150 people, including neighbours and relatives from Avoly, Manjalloor and Arakuzha panchayats in Muvattupuzha and Idukki and Alappuzha districts attended the event. Even ward members contracted jaundice after attending the function. A catering agency, from Marady panchayat, served food at the house on May 3. The same agency served food during a wedding function on May 5. Following the outbreak, health authorities closed the agency. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Eat 1 Teaspoon Every Night, See What Happens A Week Later [Video] getfittoday Undo Reportedly, the agency used cold water from the house to dilute boiled water before serving it. "Only those who attended the pre-wedding function were infected with jaundice. However, we couldn't collect water samples from the house well for testing as the first case was reported on May 30. Before that, we did routine chlorination in the well as part of the local body's regular exercise. Ice cream, chutney to serve with dosa and other items were served during the function. Items like chutney are prepared with cold water. Also, they diluted boiled water with the house well water. We couldn't confirm which food item was the source of the outbreak. Our current objective is to ensure no secondary infection. For that, an awareness class to those who attended the function is underway," said an Avoly health official. Wells in the affected areas are now being super chlorinated by increasing the quantity of chlorine depending on water in it. Nadukkara ward member Selby John refuted the chances of infection from the house. "The family cleaned their well a week before the function. Hence, there is no chance of it being the source of the outbreak. The source of the infection must be the ice cubes used in welcome drinks. None of those infected is in a serious condition," Selby said.

Paedo who avoided jail due to transgender status is hauled back to court for breaching sex order

SICK CRIMES Paedo who avoided jail due to transgender status is hauled back to court for breaching sex order A PAEDO who avoided jail due to their transgender status has been hauled back to court for breaching a sexual prevention order. Peter Selby was handed a suspended sentence after being caught with a sick stash of material of children as young as three. 2 Peter Selby previously dodged jail because of his transgender status Credit: NNP At the time, a judge told the 71-year-old: "You are someone who identifies as transgender and the impact of custody would be significant for you in the circumstances." Selby has now been dragged back to the court for breaching a sexual harm prevention order just nine months after it was imposed. The fiend, who was referred to as "he" in court, pleaded guilty to the offence. But Selby once again avoided jail and was handed a ten month sentence, suspended for 18 months. Judge Robert Adams said: "You would undoubtedly be at risk of physical or sexual assault in custody because of your presentation in a male prison." Newcastle Crown Court heard police had gone to Selby's home to carry out a risk review in March 2023 and his internet enabled devices were inspected. Prosecutor Rachael Glover said: "During a search of the laptop, the officer found VPN software downloaded to the device and set up with the name of the defendant along with his email address. "A further search by the officer in relation to the settings showed the VPN was activated and the defendant was arrested." The court heard no illegal activity or images were detected on the device but a VPN can be used to mask IP addresses. There was no mention of Selby's transgender identity at today's hearing but Judge Adams told him: 'You have been wearing women's clothing for the last 30 years. "Your family have distanced themselves from you as a result." Selby, who was born male, admitted three charges of making indecent images of children and one of possessing extreme pornography in June 2022. He was found to be in possession of more than 125,000 child abuse images, which he found using sickening search terms. The judge at the time said he was assessed in a pre-sentence report as being "manageable in the community". She added: "You identify as transgender and that has caused issues for you and anxiety for you in how you would cope with that if you were sent immediately to prison.'
