Tragedy hits family welcoming Hajjis

PHOTO: EXPRESS Two members of a family were killed and as many injured when a speeding dumper truck overturned onto their vehicle on Rashid Minhas Road in the early hours of Thursday. The victims were part of a convoy heading to Jinnah International Terminal to welcome relatives returning from Hajj. The deceased were identified by their family as 55-year-old Shaheena Naeem and her seven-year-old niece, Ayesha, daughter of Khurram Kareem. The injured included Khurram's wife, Anam, 30, and Khurram himself, who was driving the double-cabin pickup. The victims, residents of ROC Cooperative Housing Society, Scheme 33, were en route to receive their uncle, Kashif Kareem, and his family, who had just performed Hajj. Saud Khan, Shaheena's son, recounted the incident, saying that their convoy of four to five vehicles had stopped at the COD signal when a heavily loaded dumper truck, speeding recklessly, overtook from the left, lost control, and toppled onto their vehicle. "The dumper crushed our car under its weight, burying it in sand and gravel. The driver fled immediately, leaving us helpless," Saud said, his voice trembling with grief and anger. Family members and witnesses expressed severe frustration over the slow and disorganised rescue operation. Saud lamented that it took over three hours to extract the victims, with rescue workers forced to manually remove sand using shovels due to the absence of heavy machinery. "There were no oxygen cylinders available-rescue teams claimed they had run out. We kept begging for help, but the administration's response was shameful," he said. By the time the crushed vehicle was finally pulled out with the help of cranes, Shaheena and young Ayesha had already succumbed to their injuries. The tragedy has sparked outrage over the negligence of dumper truck drivers, who often flout traffic laws with impunity. Police confirmed that the driver escaped and remains unidentified, though witnesses alleged he appeared to be under the influence of drugs. Traffic was severely disrupted for hours as officials struggled to clear the wreckage. Family members, overwhelmed by grief, reportedly clashed with media personnel at the scene, with one allegedly assaulting a cameraman. This tragedy has also brought attention to Karachi's illegal sand and gravel trade. Despite Section 144 being imposed in Malir district to curb unauthorised extraction, trucks continue to operate at night, transporting material from Gadap, Memon Goth, and other areas. Chhipa Foundation spokesperson Chaudhry Shahid confirmed the accident occurred around 3:15am, attributing it to the driver's reckless speeding. SHO Gadap City, police station Sarfraz reiterated that illegal mining persists despite the ban, raising questions about enforcement. The funeral prayers for Ayesha were held in Buffer Zone, while Shaheena's took place in Liaquatabad. Both were laid to rest in the C-1 Area Graveyard.

Mumbai: The Deonar Police have registered a sweeping FIR against approximately 1,200 individuals, including former corporator Ruksana Siddiqui, following a large-scale protest on June 14 on the Ghatkopar-Mankhurd Link road on Saturday. The demonstration erupted after a tragic road accident on the Ghatkopar–Mankhurd Link Road near Lotus Junction resulted in four deaths, including three minors . According to the FIR filed under the lens of unlawful assembly and violation of prohibitory orders, the protest involved mass gathering, blocking key arterial road, violation of prohibitory Section 144 orders in the area. The authorities deployed mild force to disperse the crowd after hours of disruption. No casualties or injuries were reported among law enforcement officials during the operation .Rukhsana Siddiqui along with other named individuals have been booked under relevant sections of the Criminal Procedure Code and Indian Penal Code concerning unlawful assembly and disobedience to official orders.

Road widening work begins in Vemulawada
Sircilla: The road widening work that has been pending in the town for a decade in Vemulawada town, where Sri Vemulawada Rajarajeshwara Swamy temple, known as the Dakshina Kashi of Sircilla, is located commenced. Officials removed the municipal shops in the Mutton Market area of the town with JCBs and with the help of police. The road width from Tippapur Reddy to Rajanna Temple has been determined to be 80 feet. Officials have provided compensation to 70 out of a total of 260 displaced persons under the Land Acquisition Act of 2013. The government has allocated Rs. 47 crore for it. Officials issued notices to the evacuees 15 days ago to vacate their houses. Some people have gone to court seeking time by June 20, while the authorities will remove the rest of the houses. Vemulawada RTO Radhabai has requested all the displaced persons to cooperate. In view of the road widening initiative in Vemulawada town, the authorities have implemented Section 144 from 6 am on Monday up to a distance of 100 meters from the road widening site in the town. Government Whip and Vemulawada MLA Adi Srinivas told The Hans India that on November 20, under the leadership of Chief Minister Revanth Reddy, in the presence of 8 ministers, the foundation stone was laid for the expansion of the temple with a cost of Rs 76 crore, for the road widening with a cost of Rs 47 crore and for the construction of Anna Satram with a cost of Rs 35 crore. The town development goes on in accordance with the increasing urban population. The MLA said he and the officials visited Sringeri Peethani 4 times to expand the Vemulawada temple in 4 acres and are moving forward with the development of the temple after taking their suggestions and advice. Better facilities will be provided to the devotees of Rajanna who come from other states as well as from our own state so that they can have a quick darshan, he said. On the occasion of the road expansion from Vemulawada Tippapur Bridge to Sri Rajarajeshwara Swamy Temple, Collector Sandeep Kumar Jha and Vemulawada RDO Radhabai distributed cheques to 20 displaced persons who are parting with their lands.
