Police arrest Penaga car theft suspect who drove off with special needs girl in unattended vehicle

KEPALA BATAS, June 21 — Police have arrested a man who fled in a vehicle with a 12-year-old special needs girl in Penaga yesterday. Seberang Perai Utara police chief ACP Anuar Abd Rahman said the incident occurred around 5.30 pm when the girl's mother had gone to her husband's workshop to deliver engine oil, leaving her daughter in the car with the engine still running. 'However, when the woman, who is in her 40s, returned to the vehicle, she discovered that both the car and her daughter were missing. She then used the Life360 location tracking app to locate her phone, which was with her daughter, and found it was in the Bagan Lalang area of Butterworth,' he said in a statement today. He added that based on this information, a team from the Criminal Investigation Division of the Seberang Perai Utara district police headquarters, together with personnel from the Butterworth police station, managed to arrest a suspect and recover both the victim and the vehicle. He said checks revealed that the suspect, who is in his 60s, has seven prior criminal records and 11 past drug-related cases. 'The victim is in good condition and did not sustain any injuries. She was taken to Kepala Batas Hospital for a medical examination,' he added. Anuar said that further investigations are ongoing. The case is being investigated under Sections 379A and 363 of the Penal Code. Members of the public with any information are urged to contact investigating officer ASP Haslinda Rahmat at 04-576 2222 (ext 2275) or report to the nearest police station to assist with the investigation. — Bernama

Penang housewife loses over RM500,000 in face-to-face investment scam spanning two years

GEORGE TOWN, June 12 — A housewife lost RM521,450 after falling victim to a fraudulent investment scheme carried out face-to-face in Seberang Perai Utara (SPU), near here, recently. Penang police chief Datuk Hamzah Ahmad said the Commercial Crime Investigation Division from the SPU Police Headquarters received a report from the 57-year-old woman yesterday, with investigations underway. 'Based on investigations, the victim was introduced by her neighbour to the scheme, which promised high returns in a short period in 2022, before introducing the victim to another woman who posed as a marketing officer,' he said in a statement yesterday, adding that the woman explained to the victim how the investment worked. He said the victim then joined the investment and made 51 cash transactions into five different bank accounts from March 4, 2022, to January 22, 2024, totaling RM521,450, before realizing she had been scammed after the suspect kept giving excuses whenever she wanted to withdraw her profits. Hamzah said some of the excuses given were that the investments had not reached maturity dates and that there was no need to worry because her capital was safely stored in Bank Negara. He said the victim was also instructed to make various additional payments, including those to Bank Negara and legal fees, to facilitate the recovery of her capital and profits. 'Investigations are ongoing, including tracing those involved in the scam, and the case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating,' he added. — Bernama

Penang police: Man arrested in Penaga after allegedly caning three-year-old nephew, caught on video call by child's father

KEPALA BATAS, May 13 — Police arrested a man to assist in an investigation into an abuse case involving the man's three-year-old nephew in an incident in Pulau Mertajam, Penaga here last Friday. Seberang Perai Utara (SPU) district deputy police chief Supt C. Tharmalingam said the 34-year-old man was arrested around noon yesterday in Bertam here, following a police report made by the child's father. 'Based on the initial investigation conducted by the police, the child's father, who has divorced his wife (the child's mother), had made a video call to talk to the victim last Friday. 'The child's father, who lives and works in Kelantan, saw his former brother-in-law, who lives in the same house as his ex-wife, caning the child, and the victim was crying at that time,' Tharmalingam told Bernama today. He said a doctor's examination found bruises on the child's legs, and the man claimed he was not caning his nephew to abuse him but rather because the victim often cried. Tharmalingam added that further investigations are underway and the man has been remanded for four days from today to assist in the investigation under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001. — Bernama * If you suspect child abuse, call the following hotlines for free and confidential support: Talian Kasih at 15999 or WhatsApp 019-2615999 (24/7); Talian BuddyBear at 1800-18-2327(BEAR) (noon-midnight daily); and One Crisis Centre (24/7) Wilayah Persekutuan at 03-26155555 (Kuala Lumpur General Hospital), 03-61454333 (Sungai Buloh Hospital) or 03-83124200 (Putrajaya Hospital).
