Former Hawkeye football legend Brandon Scherff elected to Iowa Athletics Hall of Fame The list of Iowa Hawkeyes legends that dominated inside Kinnick Stadium and across the Big Ten continues to grow as another former star joins a list of his peers being immortalized. Former Iowa Hawkeyes offensive lineman Brandon Scherff has been elected to the Iowa Hawkeyes Class of 2025 Hall of Fame. The Iowa guard spent 2010-2014 with the Hawkeyes, and in that time, he left a huge impact on the Iowa football program. Brandon Scherff was the Big Ten Offensive Lineman of the Year in 2014, a two-time First-Team All-Big Ten selection in 2013 and 2014, the Outland Trophy winner in 2024, which goes to college football's best offensive lineman, and a Unanimous All-American in 2014. Following his time at Iowa, Brandon Scherff went on to be selected No. 5 overall in the 2015 NFL draft by Washington, where he spent 2015-2021. Following that, Scherff signed a three-year deal with the Jacksonville Jaguars for $49.5 million. A model of longevity in the NFL, Scherff has appeared and started in 140 games over 10 years. Texans Predicted to Land Proven Veteran Brandon Scherff to Protect C.J. Stroud

Texans Predicted to Land Proven Veteran Brandon Scherff to Protect C.J. Stroud originally appeared on Athlon Sports. With the 2025 NFL Draft and the first major wave of free agency behind them, NFL teams are developing a clearer picture of what their rosters lack. Advertisement With still much of the offseason ahead, teams will wade back into the waters of free agency. There are still several numerous names floating about, and one name stands out for the Houston Texans: Brandon Scherff. In a recent article from Pro Football & Sports Network, analyst Brandon Austin listed one free agent each NFL team should sign ahead of the 2025 season. For the Texans, Austin predicts they will pursue veteran guard Scherff to solidify the offensive line. "That position group was the team's biggest weakness in 2024, and it became even worse at the start of free agency," Austin wrote. "The 31st-ranked offensive line in PFSN's rankings traded away their best piece in left tackle Laremy Tunsil." Houston also traded away guard Kenyon Green, but they signed veteran Laken Tomlinson and made a trade with the Vikings for Ed Ingram. Advertisement Though the Texans somewhat addressed their offensive line needs in the Draft, Austin isn't convinced it's enough. "Second-round pick Aireontae Ersery is a mountain of a man, and he has starting upside in the NFL, but he may not be ready to plug into an already dysfunctional lineup right away," Austin wrote. "That's why adding a proven veteran like Brandon Scherff to the mix makes a lot of sense." The Jets held off the Jaguars Perrine/Florida Times-Union-USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images Scherff, 33, is a former No. 5 overall pick by Washington out of Iowa in the 2015 NFL Draft. He's played for a decade and has been named to the Pro Bowl in half of those seasons. Though he's likely nearing the end of his career, Austin noted Scherff's recent health as a reason for optimism. Advertisement "Scherff managed to stay healthy during his time with the Jaguars, which was a welcome change after several injury-plagued years in Washington," Austin wrote. "He's now played in all 17 games for three straight seasons, following a stretch where he missed at least three games in five consecutive years." Scherff was a brick wall in pass protection during the 2024 season after not giving up a single sack across 592 pass-blocking snaps. Among all NFL guards, only Trey Smith (665 snaps) logged more without allowing a sack. Though Scherff wouldn't be a long-term fix, he would be a powerful addition to an otherwise struggling offensive line contingent. New York Giants again urged to sign 5-time Pro Bowl free agent to bolster biggest need

New York Giants again urged to sign 5-time Pro Bowl free agent to bolster biggest need The New York Giants were one of the more aggressive teams throughout the offseason, but there are still some question marks facing the roster. Most notably, the Giants have some legitimate concerns regarding the right guard position, where they brought back veteran Greg Van Roten to compete for the starting role. It's also expected that embattled former first-round pick Evan Neal will slide inside from the right tackle spot, while the Giants used a fifth-round pick on Purdue's Marcus Mbow. Despite the competition, there's still room for another body to provide some hope that the right guard spot won't be a major liability going into a crucial 2026 campaign. That's why Brandon Austin of Pro Football Sports Network suggested the Giants look to free-agent guard Brandon Scherff as a final offseason move. Outside of left tackle Andrew Thomas and center John Michael Schmitz Jr., every other spot on the offensive line is a question mark, with right guard being especially shaky. Greg Van Roten is currently projected to start, but the Giants would be wise to explore veteran upgrades. Scherff, though past his prime at 33, remains one of the most reliable pass-blocking guards available. He didn't allow a single sack over 592 pass-blocking snaps last season, a mark surpassed only by Trey Smith among all guards. While his last Pro Bowl came in 2021, Scherff still brings steady, veteran play that could immediately raise the floor of New York's offensive line. An All-Pro First Team selection in 2020 and five-time Pro Bowler, Scherff is one of the top options for teams who need more help along the offensive line. The 33-year-old hasn't missed a game in any of the last three seasons with the Jacksonville Jaguars. The Giants don't have a ton of money to spend in free agency. Even after restructuring some contracts following the 2025 NFL draft, New York has roughly $5.95 million in available cap space, per Over The Cap, ranking as the third-lowest figure in the NFL. Only the Atlanta Falcons ($5 million) and Buffalo Bills ($1.69 million) have less cap space. Meanwhile, Spotrac projected Scherff to be in line for a one-year deal worth roughly $6.7 million at the beginning of the offseason. Whether the Giants would have to pay that much at this point in the offseason is unclear, but it would mean more money would have to be allocated. Even at 33 years old, Scherff would certainly be an upgrade over what the Giants currently have at the right guard spot, which should be considered the team's biggest question mark going into a make-or-break season. This is the second time PFN has urged the Giants to sign Scherff.

NFL analyst suggests Chargers should sign this interior offensive lineman

NFL analyst suggests Chargers should sign this interior offensive lineman The Chargers upgraded the interior part of the offensive line with the signing of Mekhi Becton, who is projected to start at left guard. However, the other two spots leave much to be desired. Bradley Bozeman, Zion Johnson, and Andre James are expected to compete for the starting center job, and the left guard spot remains a question mark if Johnson happens to come out on top. Should that come to fruition, they could bolster the left guard spot with someone proven at the position. Sports Illustrated's Gilbert Manzano suggests Los Angeles should consider signing Brandon Scherff. The Chargers prioritized adding more weapons for Justin Herbert in the draft. By doing that, they neglected the remaining holes on the interior of the offensive line. Los Angeles has a strong trio with newcomer right guard Mekhi Becton and bookend tackles Rashawn Slater and Joe Alt. However, the team needs a left guard, especially if Zion Johnson moves to center to replace Bradley Bozeman. Scherff, who's entering his age-34 season, is more than capable of filling in at guard for one season. The 10-year veteran has 140 career starts and never missed a game in his three seasons with the Jacksonville Jaguars. Scherff is a seasoned veteran, having been in the league for ten seasons, with half of them resulting in Pro Bowl appearances. The 33-year-old has not missed a start in the past three seasons, showing the ability to stay healthy after dealing with injuries during his final years with the Washington Commanders. Scherff has consistently been an excellent pass blocker. This past season, he didn't allow a single sack on 625 pass-blocking snaps. While he hasn't been at his best, Scherff has proven to be capable of getting it done as a run blocker. Scherff would not cost that much, either. Pro Football Focus projects a one-year deal worth approximately $6 million.

Bengals urged to fill last major need in free agency with big name

Bengals urged to fill last major need in free agency with big name The Cincinnati Bengals feel like a team clearing cap space for additional moves this summer around training camp, at least based on the latest contract restructure. Whether the Bengals really end up making a move to reinforce struggling positions remains to be seen, though -- and the team wasn't exactly hurting for cap space before players took pay cuts. Either way, Pro Football Focus' Mason Cameron is someone who wants to see the Bengals go out and grab Brandon Scherff in free agency to boost the offensive line in front of Joe Burrow: "Signing Brandon Scherff would amplify the unit, as his 78.0 PFF pass-blocking grade over the past two seasons ranks in the 94th percentile." RELATED: Bengals' Trey Hendrickson, Germaine Pratt standoffs updated As the writeup addresses one last move every AFC team should make, it's only natural for the Bengals section to focus on the offensive line. The team bringing back Cody Ford, signing Lucas Patrick and drafting Dylan Fairchild doesn't exactly inspire confidence when they entered the offseason needing two new starters at the guard spots. Still, one could also write that the Bengals need to upgrade in the defensive secondary with a free-agent name like Justin Simmons, too. When it comes to Scherff, there's speculation about whether he wants to keep playing, plus the argument the Bengals don't really like players on the market over the age of 30(and Scherff is 33). But he'd be a starter and upgrade, so it certainly makes sense from that angle. RELATED: Bengals' Geno Stone gets brutally honest about his contract restructure
