Sukanta Majumdar writes to LS speaker, says attack on his convoy is breach of privilege
KOLKATA: Union minister Sukanta Majumdar on Friday asked Lok Sabha speaker Om Birla to initiate breach of parliamentary privilege proceedings over an alleged attack on his convoy by West Bengal's ruling Trinamool Congress during his visit to South 24 Parganas district. The West Bengal BJP chief had gone to Budge Budge in South 24 Parganas on Thursday to meet an injured party worker when some people staged a protest, demanding unpaid wages under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) Scheme and threw slippers at his convoy and shouted slogans against him. In his letter, Majumdar, the Balurghat MP and president of Bengal unit of BJP, said, 'On June 19, while I was visiting Diamond Harbour to meet the victims of political violence and assess the law-and-order situation in the area, my official convoy was gheraoed and violently attacked by a mob reportedly comprising workers of the TMC. Stones were pelted at my convoy, vehicles were vandalized and many persons accompanying me were injured. The attack posed a serious and direct threat to my life and the lives of those present.' 'I submit that this incident amounts to serious breach of privilege and contempt of the House and urge you to take cognisance of this matter and refer it to the committee of privileges for appropriate examination and action,' he said. Majumdar also alleged that the police stood as mute spectators. He wrote on X: 'The police not only failed to act during the violence — they also failed to take any preventive action, despite clear signs of escalating tension.' Rahul Goswami, superintendent of police (SP), Diamond Harbour police district, refused to comment on the developments. The central government's decision to suspend the Centre's 60% share of MGNREGA funds has been a major political issue in West Bengal since 2022. On Wednesday, the Calcutta high court directed the Centre to resume the MGNREGA from August 1. TMC leader Kunal Ghosh said the Centre had stopped the wages of the poor people who had worked under the MGNREGA scheme. 'It is obvious that they were seething with anger. When the people staged protests, Majumdar branded the women as 'jihadis'. He should apologise in public for his statements,' Ghosh said. The TMC shared a video clip on social media in which Majumdar could be heard saying that the protestors in Budge Budge were 'jihadis'.

Rs 140.07 Crores Credited Under Rythu Bharosa Scheme to Support 1.35 Lakh Farmers in Jogulamba Gadwal
Gadwal: District Collector B.M. Santosh announced that financial aid amounting to ₹140.07 crores has been directly deposited into the bank accounts of small and marginal farmers across Jogulamba Gadwal district under the Rythu Bharosa (Farmer Investment Support) Scheme, ahead of the upcoming Vanakalam (Kharif) crop season. In an official statement, the Collector emphasized that the scheme, being implemented by the state government with the goal of farmer welfare and development, is significantly reducing the investment burden on farmers. As of Thursday evening (June 19, 2025), financial assistance has been disbursed to 1,35,024 farmers owning up to four acres of land. 'This timely deposit enables farmers to procure seeds, fertilizers, and pay labor charges without delay,' the Collector stated, underlining the importance of early support in ensuring smooth agricultural operations. The process involved accurate registration of farmers' bank account details and land information on the Rythu Bharosa portal by officials from the Agriculture Extension Department. The funds were released to eligible farmers based on this verified data. He assured that the remaining farmers will also receive the financial assistance soon. Collector Santosh highlighted that this scheme is not only providing economic relief but also enhancing mental stability among farmers. 'Providing assistance before the sowing season prevents farmers from falling into the trap of debts and allows them to begin cultivation with confidence,' he added. The Collector affirmed that the government's support extends to every acre of cultivable land, reflecting its commitment to stand by the farmers at every step. 'This is more than just a financial transaction — it is a testament to the trust and dedication the government holds toward our farmers,' he remarked. The Rythu Bharosa Scheme is increasingly being seen as a transformative initiative, aiming to boost agricultural productivity and empower rural communities by ensuring that small and marginal farmers receive necessary input support right when it is needed the most.

School students to get platform to test their coding
Panaji: As part of the Coding and Robotics Education in Schools (CARES) Scheme, during the academic year 2025-26, students will get access to a user-friendly coding platform, GOVIN IDE, developed in-house. On the platform, children will be able to write, test, and deploy code for their projects. This integration gives students early access to industry-relevant tools in a school setting, providing them with a deeper understanding of robotics and embedded systems, said Vijay Borges, the project director of the special cell created at the directorate of technical education for the implementation of CM-CARES. He said students will also get to use a robotics hardware kit designed in-house. These initiatives are for students who have opted to learn the advanced curriculum of coding and robotics as an elective subject after school hours. This year, the elective curriculum is being implemented across 206 lead schools and for over 17,000 students, with a focused rollout for students of classes VI, VII, and VIII. 11-hour water supply disruption in parts of Mumbai due to valve replacement work
Mumbai: BMC will carry out crucial valve replacement work on water pipelines in Andheri (West) and Versova, leading to an 11-hour water supply disruption in several parts of the K-West ward. The shutdown will be in effect from 2 pm on Thursday, June 19, to 1 am on Friday, June 20. The areas that will face a complete water supply shutdown during the 11-hour maintenance window include parts of Vile Parle (West) such as Lallubhai Park, Lohia Nagar, Parle Gaothan, Milan Subway, the Juhu Vile Parle Development (JVPD) Scheme, Juhu Gaothan No. 3, and V M Road — all of which usually receive water between 2:30 pm and 4:30 pm. In Moragaon (JVPD), the affected pockets are Moragaon and Juhu Gaothan Nos. 1 and 2, which also typically receive supply during the same afternoon window. In Gilbert Hill, Andheri (West), areas like Juhu Galli, Dhangarwadi, and Sagar City Society will be impacted, where the usual water supply time is from 10:00 pm to 12:30 am.
