Tories will 'wield claymore' on spending, says Findlay
Scottish Conservative leader Russell Findlay has pledged to save £650m from the Scottish budget if elected at next year's Holyrood election. Findlay said he would achieve this by introducing a Taxpayer Saving Act to "cut red tape and get a grip on spending" alongside a Scottish Agency of Value and Efficiency (Save) to "wield a claymore" on waste. Findlay told the party's conference in Edinburgh he would put "streamlining" the Scottish government at the heart of his plans if elected next year. He urged voters to back the Scottish Conservatives over Reform UK, adding a vote for Nigel Farage's party would only result in "another five years of SNP government". In his keynote speech to members, Findlay accused John Swinney's government of "wasting untold sums of public money". He said the party would shut down government quangos, reduce the number of ministers and advisors and cut the size of the civil service to levels last seen 10 years ago in order to "deliver better value". On Friday, the UK Conservative leader, Kemi Badenoch, used her speech at the conference to call for an end to the windfall tax in the North Sea. Findlay said residents would be given new powers to oppose "mega-pylons" and would end the current presumption against new nuclear energy in Scotland. The Conservative leader claimed pupils in schools were being "written off" and that "woke ideas" were being pushed on children "at the expense of vital knowledge". Findlay said his party offered a "common sense vision" for Scotland. But he said those considering abandoning the party in favour of Reform would only help the SNP hang on to power. Aberdeenshire councillor Lauren Knight became the latest Conservative councillor to defect to Reform on Friday, stating she felt "let down" by the party. Reform also finished ahead of the Conservatives in the recent Hamilton, Larkhall and Stonehouse by-election, which saw the Tory vote fall by 11.5%. Findlay described Farage's spending plans as "fantastical" and said only his party could "shake up Scottish politics". He said: "Reform pretend they can do it, but all they'll achieve is another five years of SNP government. "As we saw at the General Election, and as every poll shows, Reform increases the chance of the SNP winning." He added: "Maybe it's because Nigel Farage says he's not worried about the SNP getting another five-year term. "Well we are worried about the SNP, Nigel, because we live here. "But we can't spend our time focusing on Reform because it's what we do that matters most."

Day four of 100-day action plan sees rallies, Swachh walks, tree plantations
Hyderabad: On day four of the 100-day action plan, the Municipal Administration department took up programmes like tree plantation, rallies, Swachh walks, cleaning of lakes, collecting plastic waste, essay writing competitions, etc. To mark the World Environment Day on Thursday, the staff under the urban local bodies under the Commissioner and Directorate of Municipal Administration (CDMA) took up tree plantations, rallies / Swachh walks in different urban local bodies. According to a senior official, the municipal staff would be continuously taking up door to door awareness, social media campaign, mike announcement, caller tunes, signages, IEC stalls, kiosks, online entry of water supply connections, formation of CIG for street vendors, bank linkage to SHGs, profiling of waste pickers, testing of chlorination in water levels, identification survey of uncovered urban poor women and formation of SHGs. The voluntary organisations were also roped in to create awareness on saving the water bodies. The Hyderabad Citizens Forum Hyderabad Zindabad organised a human chain on the theme 'Save Hussain Sagar - Save Hyderabad' on World Environment Day under the slogan 'End Plastic Pollution' a huge plastic globe human chain at Tank Bund. The CDMA has taken up a 100-day action plan in the urban local bodies from June 2. he key objectives of the action plan include enhancing solid waste management and sanitation systems, ensuring monsoon preparedness through critical civic infrastructure improvements, driving behavioural change and community participation through extensive IEC (information education and communication) campaigns on solid waste management, promoting urban greenery and beautification efforts for cleaner cities, conducting a comprehensive Bhuvan Survey for Identification of unassessed and under assessed properties in ULBs and bring them in tax net.

Green Light For 17 Community Groups
Press Release – Hawkes Bay Regional Council Earlier this year, ECCT contributed an additional $60,000 to the fund, complementing Regional Councils $50,000 investment to support community-led biodiversity efforts across the region. Seventeen local community groups have been named recipients of the first 2025 funding round from the Biodiversity Hawke's Bay Environmental Enhancement Contestable Fund. This marks the first of two funding rounds this year, made possible through a partnership between Hawke's Bay Regional Council, Biodiversity Hawke's Bay, and the Eastern & Central Community Trust (ECCT). (Photo/Supplied) Earlier this year, ECCT contributed an additional $60,000 to the fund, complementing Regional Council's $50,000 investment to support community-led biodiversity efforts across the region. Regional Council Principal Advisor Biosecurity & Biodiversity Mark Mitchell says the high calibre of applications reflects biodiversity work already underway. 'There are many community groups doing important mahi for our environment and already making a difference. This year we received a large number of applications and faced some tough decisions in selecting the final 17. This funding gives those groups a boost, helping them take projects further and achieve even more for biodiversity and our communities.' Biodiversity Hawke's Bay General Manager Debbie Monahan highlighted the regional spread of the successful projects. 'It's fantastic to see initiatives from Wairoa to Central Hawke's Bay receiving support. While we couldn't fund every application, the strong interest shows just how much innovation is going into protecting our environment.' ECCT Chief Executive David Clapperton added, 'We're proud to see ECCT's contribution helping bring these projects to life. It's a great example of what's possible when organisations collaborate to support community-driven environmental action.' Thanks to continued support from both the Regional Council and ECCT, a second funding round will open later in 2025. Community groups with biodiversity-focused projects are encouraged to apply. Fund opening dates will be available on in early September with applications opening in late September. Former Unifor members laid off from Glacier Media papers launch their own newspaper co-op
VANCOUVER, BC, June 4, 2025 /CNW/ - Following the closure of Glacier Media's digital community newspapers in April and May, which affected the jobs of Unifor Local 2000 members, journalists are now banding together to form a worker co-op with the goal of launching a newspaper in regions of British Columbia. "This grassroots project exemplifies the tenacity and dedication of journalists who care about their communities and the work they produce," said Unifor National President Lana Payne. "This is not just a fight against news deserts, but a battle for democracy." Four longtime community news reporters have joined forces with Unifor and the Union Cooperative Initiative to launch the Save Our Local News campaign. This bold initiative aims to create a fresh, trusted and reliable news publication in the growing communities of New Westminster, Burnaby and the Tri-Cities. The Glacier Media closures affected the communities of Burnaby, New Westminster, Port Moody, Anmore, Belcarra, Coquitlam and Port Coquitlam, contributing to the troubling news deserts in Metro Vancouver. Glacier Media said it is keeping all non-union websites online and will continue to print the non-union publications North Shore News and Delta Optimist. "Thousands of residents and organizations in the Tri-Cities, Burnaby and New Westminster communities have lost access to their longstanding local news publications with the recent closures of the New Westminster Record, Burnaby Now and Tri-City News," said Unifor Western Regional Director Gavin McGarrigle. "This has sparked interest in developing a new worker-led and community driven model for local news — one that puts communities over profits." Unifor is donating $5,000 to this project. The co-op is asking the community to support their campaign and fundraising efforts by signing up at Unifor represents more than 10,000 media workers, including journalists in the broadcast and print news industry.
