"Want To Study": Girl, 16, Approaches Supreme Court, Seeks To End Her Child Marriage

New Delhi: A 16-year-old girl from Bihar approached the Supreme Court through her best friend, seeking annulment of her forced marriage under the Child Marriage Prohibition Act, 2006. The teenager who recently appeared for her Class 10 Board exams had appealed the top court to protect her from her family and husband. The petition has been filed on behalf of her by her friend Saurabh Kumar, who faces an FIR for kidnapping her. The minor, however, maintains that Kumar helped her flee her abusive marriage. The girl is said to be facing threat to her life for protesting against continuing in an abusive child marriage solemnised under coercion against her wish. The plea states that her husband has been pursuing the case personally and has told people in Madhopur village that he would not mind going to jail after killing her. "The Petitioner is presently on the run with a friend (Saurabh Kumar) and fears they would be killed if they returned back to Bihar or were apprehended in the hunt launched for them," reads her plea. The plea seeks protection from any coercive action by police till the matter is finally decided by law. The top court will hear the case on Wednesday. According to the plea, the parents of the minor girl got her married on December 9, 2024 under coercion with a person aged about 32-33 years. She was given a send-off immediately after the marriage ceremony even though her Class X board examination was round the corner, she claims, adding that she was assured that she would be allowed to return two days later. However, she was not allowed to return to her parental home by her in-laws, who claimed to have given and spent a lot of money for the marriage and repeatedly told her that they wanted a baby, the plea added. The plea further states that her husband, who is a civil contractor, claimed that the petitioner's parents were indebted to them and she would have to continue in the marriage rather than go for further studies to pursue her dream of becoming a teacher or a lawyer. Her husband, says the plea, used to beat the petitioner on a daily basis for refusing and resisting his attempt at a physical relationship. She remained under severe stress while being abused mentally and physically till the second week of January 2025 when her maternal uncle persuaded the in-laws to allow her to return to her, the plea states further. "She told her mother that she was being abused and wanted to study further but to no avail. On March 31, 2025, she left her home and sought help from her friend Saurabh Kumar who agreed to help her after much persuasion. Saurabh Kumar first accompanied her to Varanasi as per her wish and they have since been on the run after their location was traced," the plea states. According to the plea her mother Pammi Devi lodged an FIR on April , 2025, before the Piplawa Naubatpur police station in Patna district concealing the fact that her daughter was married.

Saurabh ends decade-long stint with UP, set to join Andhra

Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh's seasoned left-arm spinner Saurabh Kumar , 32, has decided to switch to Andhra Pradesh for the upcoming domestic season. In a statement on social media, Saurabh wrote: "I would like to express my profound gratitude for the great journey I had with UPCA over the past 10 years of First-Class Cricket. As I move on to new opportunities, I would like to take a moment to express my sincere appreciation and gratitude to UPCA for giving me the opportunities to lead and learn. " "As I venture into a new chapter of my cricketing journey with the Andhra Pradesh Cricket Association, I would like to extend my acknowledgement to all who have been a part of my journey so far," he further added. Kumar, who was part of the India squad during last year's Test series against England (2024), as well as the overseas tours of Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, has opted to move from Uttar Pradesh to Andhra ahead of the new season. He has played 79 first-class matches, taking 324 wickets and scoring 2,374 runs. His best performance came against Haryana in the 2018–19 season, where he picked up 14 wickets in a match. Speaking to TOI, the Baghpat lad said, "It was a good opportunity that knocked on my door, and I accepted it. I will play all three formats for Andhra Pradesh." Responding to UP's recent performances in domestic cricket, he said, "I don't think there's any major reason for us not winning trophies. We reached the semifinal in the Ranji Trophy, qualified in the one-day tournament, and in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, we qualified twice in consecutive years. It's just bad luck that UP hasn't won a senior domestic title recently."

Deloitte launches agentic AI centre with hubs in India, Singapore, Malaysia

Deloitte on Wednesday announced the launch of a new Asia Pacific Agentic Artificial Intelligence (AI) Centre of Excellence (CoE) with hubs in India, Singapore, and Malaysia. The initiative brings together over 6,000 professionals across the region and supports AI projects worth more than $1 billion, the company said. These centres will focus on agentic AI—a form of artificial intelligence that operates autonomously, requiring minimal human supervision. This emerging technology is capable of making decisions and continuously learning to optimise outcomes. At the heart of the new CoE is Zora AI, Deloitte's proprietary platform that can manage complex tasks across functions such as finance, procurement, sales, and marketing, thereby freeing up human teams to focus on strategy and innovation. 'We are already witnessing a shift from AI being used for incremental enhancements to AI serving as a catalyst for fundamental transformation,' said Sathish Gopalaiah, President of Technology & Transformation at Deloitte South Asia. The CoE aims to help businesses redesign workflows, implement autonomous processes, and build adaptive operating models. It will also strengthen Deloitte's AI delivery capabilities across Asia, Europe, and North America, and support collaborations with key tech players like NVIDIA. India's potential in agentic AI Speaking on India's role in this initiative, Saurabh Kumar, Partner at Deloitte India, highlighted the country's digital infrastructure and engineering talent as key enablers of global leadership in agentic AI. 'Using the Asia Pacific Agentic AI CoE, we will co-create sector-specific autonomous agents that embed India's domain expertise,' Kumar said. According to Deloitte's State of GenAI (Fourth Wave) report published in April, over 80% of Indian businesses are actively exploring the development of autonomous agents, making India a frontrunner in agentic AI adoption.

The annual report, compiled by the Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) in collaboration with Down To Earth magazine, assesses the performance of states and UTs across critical environmental and sustainable development indicators such as forest and biodiversity, climate, waste management, water resources, etc. Chandigarh's exemplary performance reflects its commitment to sustainability and smart urban planning. The UT's high score is driven by significant achievements, including robust waste segregation and management systems; efficient urban mobility initiatives, including electric vehicle adoption and public transport upgrades; green cover expansion and biodiversity conservation, water conservation and sanitation, clean energy transition, with increasing reliance on solar power and green buildings. Saurabh Kumar, CCF Chandigarh and director, environment, Chandigarh administration, stated, 'This recognition is a result of collective action by our administration, civic bodies, and the residents of Chandigarh. Speaking to ANI, Saurabh Kumar said, '...It was a highly successful visit of the all-party delegation. In the one and a half days the delegation was in Brussels, they had over 10 meetings. Most of them were on the EU side, but two meetings were also on the Belgian side, both on the Parliamentary level and on the executive side. They met people at the highest levels. The message about cross-border terrorism directed against India that has to end, details about Operation Sindoor and our expectations from the international community and zero tolerance against terrorism - all these messages were made to all the interlocutors. These messages were well-appreciated and we got good responses from them.' Kumar said India is working to strengthen ties with the European Union, especially in areas like counter-terrorism and ending cross-border terrorism. He said both sides had positive talks during the all-party delegation's visit to Brussels, and the EU showed understanding about India's concerns. He added that India looks forward to a summit with the EU soon and that both sides agree that those behind terror attacks must be punished. 'We look forward to close cooperation with the European is to build up on the relationship, there is a geopolitical environment which favours greater and deeper ties between India and the EU. So, counter-terrorism, how to end cross-border terrorism, build up and deepen our strategic partnership, all parts of our conversations which are going on with the EU. We look forward to having a Summit with the EU, which is due, and dates for that would also be worked out. But in the specific context of the visit of the all-Parliamentary delegation to Brussels and the engagement with the EU, the message was conveyed to the European side in a very constructive and positive manner. The response from the European side was that they understand the menace of cross-border terrorism and that steps should be taken. India has the right to protect its citizens, and the perpetrators of the heinous acts should be brought to justice,' Kumar said. Kumar further noted that Belgium is showing strong interest in working with India, mentioning a recent visit by Princess Astrid with a large business team that met top Indian leaders. He said both sides plan to continue this strong engagement. 'On the EU side, there is high-level political engagement and we are looking forward to the Summit, and the Summit would really set the course for our relationship for the next couple of years. Subsequently, the Indian Armed Forces carried out targeted strikes against terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir, resulting in the deaths of over 100 terrorists linked to groups such as Jaish-e-Mohammed, Lashkar-e-Taiba, and Hizbul Mujahideen.
