Apple's first foldable iPhone may arrive in 2026, says analyst Ming-Chi Kuo

Apple's first foldable iPhone could feature a 7.8-inch inner display, ultra-thin design, and dual cameras, with mass production expected in 2026 New Delhi Apple is reportedly gearing up to launch its first foldable iPhone, with mass production expected to begin in the second half of 2026. According to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple has begun finalising key specifications of the device, including its display, while other components such as the hinge remain undecided. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Kuo noted that the foldable display is among the few components with confirmed specifications and will be supplied by Samsung Display. Samsung is said to be preparing annual production capacity for seven to eight million foldable panels dedicated to Apple's 2026 launch, though actual manufacturing may only span a few months that year. Foxconn, Apple's long-time manufacturing partner, is expected to kick off the foldable iPhone project in late 2025, with full-scale production beginning in the second half of 2026. Kuo stated that Apple has placed an order for 15 to 20 million foldable iPhones. However, this figure reflects cumulative demand across a two to three year lifecycle rather than shipments in 2026 alone—indicating Apple anticipates steady annual demand through 2027 and 2028. Foldable iPhone: What to expect Kuo previously reported that Apple's first foldable iPhone is expected to adopt a book-style form factor with a notably thin profile. The device could measure between 9mm and 9.5mm when folded, and just 4.5mm to 4.8mm when unfolded. The device is likely to feature a 5.5-inch external display and a 7.8-inch main screen with minimal visible crease. These estimates were echoed by analyst Jeff Pu, who added that the outer screen could offer a resolution of 2,088 x 1,422 pixels, while the internal display might feature 2,713 x 1,920 pixels. Kuo also said the device could use a hinge made of stainless steel and titanium alloy, with a titanium frame for the casing—similar to the material used on Apple's current iPhone Pro models. The foldable iPhone is expected to house a dual rear camera system, along with separate front-facing cameras on both the cover and main displays.

The outer display is likely to be 5.5 inches, perfect for regular smartphone use when the device is folded. Display Production and Shipment Expectations Samsung Display (SDC) is reportedly the main supplier for Apple's foldable screen. The company is planning to set up annual production of 7 to 8 million foldable panels for Apple. iPhone Foldable Launch From Apple Once Again Tipped For Next Year: What More We Know

Last Updated: iPhone foldable launch is widely tipped for 2026 and Apple is banking on its partners to get the device ready ahead of the iPhone 18 series launch. Apple's big AI delays mean all focus now shifts to the company entering the foldable segment with its first iPhone model expected in late 2026. According to reports, Apple's first foldable is said to be a book-style folding device, similar to the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 and might have a 12-inch inner screen with two rear cameras. In terms of dimensions, it could come with 9.2mm in thickness when folded and 4.6mm when unfolded, which makes it notably slimmer than the Galaxy Z Fold 6 even the Fold 5. And now Ming-Chi Kuo, analyst claims Apple has a clear roadmap for its foldable device and how it plans to go about its production as well as availability on shelves. iPhone Foldable Launch: What Kuo Says The analyst says Apple will depend on Samsung Display to source the foldable screen for its iPhones. The company is going to use Foxconn to make the device which will start working on the product from Q3 2024 or early 2026 before mass production later in the year. This also suggests Apple could be lining up the iPhone foldable with the iPhone 18 series next year. The company is hoping to ship around 15 million to 20 million units which is an ambitious figure for a pricey product. Samsung is rumoured to be developing the screen exclusively for Apple's first foldable smartphone with UTG Lens technology. It's most likely a variant of the ultra-thin glass (UTG) that Samsung utilises in its bendable goods. The company is yet to talk about its foldable plans, as it currently looks to fix the issues facing its AI ecosystem. Siri AI has been delayed till 2026 and a new report claims Apple will have it ready with the iOS 26.4 update that should be rolling out around March-April next year. Apple's foldable phone to launch in late 2026, Samsung panels already ordered

Ming-Chi Kuo, one of the most renowned Apple-related analysts, shared an interesting report regarding Apple's future foldable phone. We've heard many rumors about the device in the past, but according to the latest supply chain analysis, the Cupertino-based company is close to releasing a bendy. The first evidence comes from the assembly supplier for Apple, Foxconn. According to people familiar with the matter, the company is about to kick off the project in Q3 2025 or early Q4, while mass production will likely commence in the second half of 2026. Most of the components are not yet finalized, including the "liquidmetal hinge". The display, on the other hand, is one of the few components with finished specs. It's going to be sourced from Samsung Display. This alone might give us a pretty good idea of how the foldable iPhone will turn out. According to the report, Apple has ordered 7-8 million foldable panels, while the supposed production of foldable iPhones is anything between 15 and 20 million units. Ming-Chi Kuo suspects that the plan is to meet the cumulative demand over the product's lifecycle of around 2-3 years. It's unlikely that Apple will sell 15 million units in 2026 alone, given the premium price tag. Source

Apple's foldable iPhone could feature Samsung display, launch in 2026: Ming-Chi Kuo

Apple may finally be preparing to enter the foldable smartphone market, with production of its first foldable iPhone reportedly set to begin later this year. Renowned industry analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has suggested that Foxconn, a key Apple supplier, is gearing up to commence work on the much-anticipated device by the end of Q3 or the start of Q4 2025. While the Cupertino-based tech giant has not confirmed any plans for a foldable handset, Kuo's latest update indicates that Apple is moving steadily towards a 2026 launch. According to the analyst, the foldable iPhone is still in its early stages of development, with key component specifications—including the hinge mechanism—yet to be finalised. One of the most significant developments involves the display, which is expected to be manufactured by Samsung Display. The Korean company is reportedly preparing to produce between seven and eight million flexible panels for the device, though actual shipments in the launch year may fall short of this figure due to limited production time in 2026. Kuo believes Apple could be planning an initial order of 15 to 20 million foldable iPhones, aiming to meet demand across the product's anticipated two- to three-year lifecycle. Mass production is expected to begin in the second half of 2026, with annual shipments projected to span into 2027 and 2028. While the final design remains under wraps, speculation suggests the device may adopt a book-style form factor, featuring a 5.5-inch external screen and a larger 7.8-inch inner display when unfolded. The foldable iPhone is also rumoured to include a robust metal hinge and could carry a hefty price tag of around $2,300 (approximately ₹ 1,99,000), making it one of Apple's most premium offerings to date. The device is tentatively expected to debut in autumn 2026, though Kuo cautions that Apple's plans may still evolve in the coming months.
