Minority quota politics: Karnataka's housing move sparks row
The Siddaramaiah-led Congress government in Karnataka is facing flak for its latest decision to raise the minority quota in state housing schemes from 10% to 15%. The move, approved in a cabinet meeting on Thursday, follows recent criticism over the state's caste census and has triggered a fresh political firestorm. The BJP accused the Congress of indulging in "appeasement politics" for electoral gain. "Wherever Congress is in power, it brings divisive, religion-based reservation policies," BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra told ET. "This is not welfare, it's vote bank politics ." State housing minister HK Patil defended the decision, stating that minority communities have a larger share of homeless families. "The Centre itself has flagged this issue. Our move is for social justice, not politics," he said. The Karnataka BJP is now preparing to launch statewide protests against what it describes as yet another example of "selective governance" by the Congress.

BJP has phobia of Gandhi-Nehru: Congress' Sukhdeo Bhagat on BJP criticising Karnataka housing scheme quota
Raipur (Chhattisgarh) [India], June 20 (ANI): Slamming the Bharatiya Janata Party for criticising the Karnataka Government's decision to raise minority reservations in housing schemes from 10 per cent to 15 per cent, Congress leader Sukhdeo Bhagat said that he had heard about hydrophobia, but BJP has a 'phobia' of 'Gandhi' and 'Nehru'. Deo alleged that the BJP was giving a 'Hindu-Muslim' angle to every scheme and stated that the party should exclude 'Muslims' from their 'Sabka Saath-Sabka Vikas' slogan. BJP MP Sambit Patra on Friday tore apart the Congress-led Karnataka government over its decision to increase reservation in housing development schemes for minorities from 10 to 15 per cent. He termed it a 'perfect' example of how people keep the Constitution in their 'pockets' after 'tearing it into pieces.' Sambit Patra said the Constitution for the Congress party and the Gandhi family are secondary to appeasement. 'The Karnataka Cabinet passing the Muslim reservation in housing schemes yesterday is a perfect example of how the people who keep the Constitution in their pockets are tearing the Constitution to pieces... For the Congress Party and the Gandhi family, the Constitution is secondary to religious appeasement', Sambit Patra told reporters on Friday. Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar rebuffed BJP leader Amit Malviya's criticism of the state government's decision to raise minority reservations in housing schemes from 10 per cent to 15 per cent, accusing the BJP of fostering division. Malviya had criticised the Congress government, alleging the hike was a move to 'appease its vote bank' at the expense of other communities, calling it 'blatantly illegal and unconstitutional.'Shivakumar accused the BJP of promoting divisive politics and said the government's decision was based on recommendations like the Sachar Committee Report and aimed at correcting implementation lapses in minority housing quotas. Addressing the media, Shivakumar said, 'I am least bothered about any other BJP leader's comments or anything. They create hatred and they will try to divide society. We always try to unite society. There is a Sachar Committee Report which states that 15 per cent of the reservation should be given on welfare schemes to minorities. In various schemes, we had given 10 per cent of houses' reservation to them but in rural parts of Karnataka, there are no minorities. All minorities are in urban section - some were 25 per cent, some others 30 per cent, somewhere else 12 per cent. So, there were a lot of lapses. That is why, my Minister proposed it.' The Karnataka Cabinet on Thursday approved an increase in the reservation quota for minority communities under various housing schemes from 10 per cent to 15 per cent. (ANI)

Perfect example of keeping constitution in pockets after tearing it: Sambit Patra's huge bombshell on Karnataka govt over housing welfare scheme
Bhubaneswar (Odisha) [India], June 20 (ANI): BJP MP Sambit Patra on Friday tore apart the Congress-led Karnataka government over its decision to increase reservation in housing development schemes for minorities from 10 to 15 per cent. Sambit Patra asserted that he has come to expose the double standards and appeasement policies of the Karnataka Congress unit, and how they have always tried to disrupt the 'social fabric' of India. 'I am here today to expose the double standards and appeasement policies of the Karnataka Congress unit, and reveal how Congress has always tried to disrupt the social fabric of India... The Congress cabinet in Karnataka decided that Muslims will get a reservation in the housing schemes across the state, and the reservation will be increased to 15%', Sambit Patra said. The BJP MP slammed the Karnataka government and said that a religious angle has been brought to the housing welfare scheme. He mentioned that Congress always invites a 'long-term' disaster for the sake of short-term benefits. 'A religious angle has been added to this housing welfare scheme. There is no doubt that Congress often invites a long-term disaster to gain short-term political benefits', Sambit Patra asserted. The BJP MP said that the Public Procurement Amendment Bill 2025 in Karnataka showed that it has become a 'marketplace' for the Congress party's 'appeasement' politics. The Karnataka Transparency in Public Procurement Amendment Bill 2025 showed that welfare schemes have become a marketplace of appeasement for the Congress Party... Reservations based on religion and appeasement politics are always taken forward wherever Congress assumes power... The Congress Party is never apologetic about this because they accept the fact that they are into vote bank politics and not into welfare schemes. No governance, only divisive experiments', the BJP MP added. Patra's remarks come amid growing criticism from BJP leaders over the Karnataka Cabinet's approval on Thursday to raise the reservation quota for minority communities from 10 to 15 per cent under various housing schemes. The decision has triggered a political uproar, with the BJP arguing that religion-based reservation violates constitutional principles. Earlier, Karnataka Minister HK Patil stated that this move does not require any new rules to be drafted. 'The reservation for all minority communities will be increased. There are Christians, Jains, Buddhists,' the Minister said. (ANI)

"Congress is a modern representation of Muslim League": BJP's Shehzad Poonawalla on Karnataka govt's housing quota
New Delhi [India], June 20 (ANI): Slamming the Karnataka government for increasing reservation for minorities under various housing schemes from 10 to 15%, BJP leader Shehzad Poonawalla on Friday called the Congress a modern representation of the Muslim League and accused it of behaving like its leader Muhammad Ali Jinnah who fought for the division of India along communal lines. 'The Congress Party serves as the modern representation of the Muslim League. It behaves like Jinnah, who divided India along communal lines... They have stated that Muslims have first rights to the country's resources,' Poonawalla told ANI. 'They have taken away SC, ST, and OBC reservations and allocated them to the Muslim community on religious grounds, which contradicts Ambedkar and the constitution. They have granted reservations to Muslims in civil contracts as well, which goes against the constitutional spirit,' he added. He alleged that the Congress is doing this to rub salt into the wounds of the Hindu community. 'For them, Hindus don't matter. They want to play only divide and rule, and this kind of thing is against the constitution. Yet, the Congress party does it again and again to divide Hindus on caste lines. They commit the fake caste survey, which they have to take back, where the muslim population is shown more, and now they are giving the extra quota to muslims on a religious basis only because of their vote bank politics,' he said. Poonawalla's remarks come amid growing criticism from BJP leaders over the Karnataka Cabinet's approval on Thursday to raise the reservation quota for minority communities from 10 to 15 per cent under various housing schemes. The decision has triggered a political uproar, with the BJP arguing that religion-based reservation violates constitutional principles. BJP spokesman Sambit Patra told media persons that the Bangladesh government 's stance is not proper as it could have taken some action. "We are not intruding on any international domain. But this is the topic of Rabindranath Tagore, so BJP takes it very seriously and sensitively. On Tuesday, Rabindranath Tagore's ancestral house, located in Bangladesh, was attacked and damaged... His Kacharibari , built by his grandfather, has been attacked. We are getting to know that the people of Jamaat-e-Islami and Hefazat-e-Islam carried out this attack," Patra said at a press conference.
