Sam Kerr's teaser sends fans wild despite sad omission as Matildas favourite returns
Sam Kerr appears to be nearing a return after sharing footage of her back in training despite being left out of Joe Montemurro's Matildas squad for his first-game in charge. There is plenty of excitement around the Matildas with new coach Montemurro naming a large 33-strong squad for games against Slovenia and Panama. Interestingly, 14 A-League Women players joined the squad but Women's Super League stars and current captain Steph Catley, forward Caitlin Foord and midfielder Katrina Gorry will not feature in the four-game window having taken leave after a long season. However, Kerr was once again among the absentees having suffered setback during her ACL rehab the other week. Kerr has not played football in more than 16 months after tearing her ACL during training for her club side Chelsea. And earlier this month, it was revealed Kerr underwent surgery on a separate injury. Little is known about her recovery timeline, with Kerr and partner Kristie Mews recently taking a break and holidaying in the off-season. However, the Matildas superstar handed fans an update having posted a photo of her back training and running with Chelsea during training. Although she was once again excluded from the Matildas squad with fans increasingly interested over when she will make a comeback. The Matildas superstar has been undergoing her recovery and was a hope to line-up for Chelsea, before their record breaking Women's Super League season came to an end. Although this didn't come to fruition with the plan for Kerr to remain in England and continue her recovery with Chelsea. 🥹🥹 — jurídico sam kerr (@m4yaramonster) June 19, 2025 Light at the end of the tunnel for next season 😍😍😍 — ℜ u k ǝ K v ǝ l l 🇬🇧🇨🇦 (@Ruke_kvell) June 19, 2025 When is Sam Kerr going to return to playing football? — The Australian's pie chart creator (@Elfvandel20) June 20, 2025 While Kerr remains out, Mackenzie Arnold and Hayley Raso both return from injury. The Tottenham winger was missed by the Matildas in recent games with her creativity a major loss for the side. Montemurro is looking to improve the Matildas and find some results with Australia's national women's team dropping to their equal-worst position on the FIFA rankings. The World No.16 side has struggled in the last 12 months having been knocked out in a disastrous Olympics and SheBelieves Cup campaign. "When you have this amount of time, you can start to infiltrate some good ideas and make a statement in terms of the way we want to play," Montemurro said. "We still want to win football matches. We still want to show you who we are as a footballing nation. But more importantly, to really instil some identity, and really instil some belief in this team that you know going forward."

Ellie Carpenter one step closer to signing with Chelsea in the WSL after wife signs with London City
A massive transfer deal that would put Ellie Carpenter and Sam Kerr at the same English club is a step closer with a key piece of the move confirmed. Carpenter's wife Danielle van de Donk was this morning confirmed as signing with newly promoted English Women's Super League side London City Lionesses. The pair met and were playing together in French league side Lyon. Van de Donk's contract was not renewed and Lionesses were quick to snag her signature. Carpenter still has a year left on her contract but it is unlikely she will want to play in France while her wife lives in England. Sources say Kerr's club Chelsea are keen to sign the talented defender - offering up right back Ashley Lawrence in return. It would be a good move for Carpenter who has achieved all there is to achieve with Lyon - including multiple league titles and Champions league victory. While the French league is one of the best in the world there is huge investment occurring in the WSL with plans for expansion for the 2026/27 season.

Steph Catley and Sam Kerr among absentees from Joe Montemurro's first Matildas squad
New Matildas coach Joe Montemurro's first squad is a 'balance of experience and potential' with a host of fresh faces and several notable absentees, including captain Steph Catley and ongoing injury casualty Sam Kerr. Montemurro has named a 33-player squad ahead of four matches – two against Slovenia and two against Panama – in Western Australia from June 26 to July 8. Catley, who has captained the national team since Kerr suffered a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament in her knee in January last year, has been granted personal leave, along with fellow star duo Caitlin Foord and Katrina Gorry. Apart from Kerr, others out through injury are Mary Fowler, Tameka Yallop and recent debutant Kahli Johnson, while Cortnee Vine remains on extended leave. Forward Grace Kuilamu and midfielder Adriana Taranto have both earnt their first senior call-ups and are among six uncapped players in the squad, the others being defender Alexia Apostolakis, midfielder Jacynta Galabadaarachchi, and goalkeepers Sally James and Jada Whyman. 'This group represents a balance of experience and potential, and we'll use this window to connect, experiment, and move forward with clear intent,' said Montemurro, who earlier this month was confirmed as Maildas coach after Tom Sermanni had been interim boss since September last year. 'We wanted to use this window not just to prepare for the matches but to really explore the talent that's coming through. 'It's a rare opportunity to work with a broadened squad, give players their first or renewed taste of the environment, and assess where we are as a group. 'This window is about setting the tone. We're laying the foundations for the next phase of our journey as we build relationships, create an understanding of our style of play, and enhance the high-performance environment that enables our players to thrive.' Goalkeepers Whyman and Mackenzie Arnold, defenders Ellie Carpenter, Alanna Kennedy and Winonah Heatley, midfielder Kyra Cooney-Cross and Clare Wheeler, and forwards Sharn Freier and Remy Siemsen will only take part in the matches against Slovenia on June 26 and June 29, both at HBF Park. Players only taking part in the games against Panama on July 5 (Bunbury) and July 8 (HBF Park) are Kuilamu, Taranto, Apostolakis, Galabadaarachchi, James, Chloe Berryhill, Bryleeh Henry, Chloe Lincoln and Jessika Nash. Matildas squad: Alexia Apostolakis (Melbourne City), Mackenzie Arnold (Portland Thorns, USA), Chloe Berryhill (Western United), Ellie Carpenter (Olympique Lyon, France), Kyra Cooney-Cross (Arsenal, England), Alex Chidiac (Melbourne Victory), Sharn Freier (Wolfsburg, Germany), Jacynta Galabadaarachchi (Unattached), Emily Gielnik (Melbourne Victory), Charlotte Grant (Tottenham Hotspur. Sam Kerr's fiancee Kristie Mewis posts revealing update after hitting a post-pregnancy milestone
US football star Kristie Mewis had fans in stitches after posting about reaching a post-pregnancy fitness milestone just weeks after welcoming her son, Jagger, with Matildas captain Sam Kerr. On Tuesday, the West Ham midfielder shared a photo to Instagram to let her fans know she was back on the football field. 'First football session back, might of been my last,' she wrote alongside a snap of her looking absolutely exhausted. The Postpartum Return to Play Guide from soccer's FIFA governing body recommends players wait at least six weeks before doing any exercise, and at least twelve weeks before any serious high-performance competition. Mewis gave birth on May 8, so the footballer is doing very well to be back kicking a ball again so soon. Meanwhile, Kerr has had a recent injury setback on her return to football, though the exact nature of the situation is still unclear. The Aussie skipper has undergone more surgery, though it's believed the new injury isn't related to her existing knee issues. It comes as a huge blow for the Aussie superstar who has not played for club or country in 16 months after she ruptured her anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) back in 2024 during a training camp with Chelsea. She would later undergo surgery on the ACL tear and, at the beginning of the year, was seen back training on grass with Sonia Bompastor's side. Following the official confirmation of his appointment earlier in the month, new Matildas coach Joe Montemurro stated he won't be making an official call on Kerr's future as Australia captain until she returns to play. Bompastor had also refused to be drawn on when Kerr might return, with the Blues boss stating that her injury time frame was still unclear. However, the former Lyon manager has explained that Kerr is now back training on grass, having undergone the surgical procedure while revealing that her knee injury was much better. 'Look, I think there were some complications and I've only caught up with the scenario in the last 24 hours,' he explained to Channel 10 News when pressed for an update on Kerr. 'There was a subsequent intervention, but I do believe she is now back running. 'I think it was something completely different (to the existing knee injury). I think the knee is fine. 'I think there was some other issues, but again I've only been briefed in the last 24 hours.' The Matildas have a busy few weeks coming up. They are playing friendlies against Slovenia on June 26 and 29, followed by friendlies against Panama on July 5 and 8, with the first of those clashes marking the first time Montemurro will be in charge of the national team.

Matildas star Katrina Gorry blasts attacks on kids who have two mums as she defends Sam Kerr over sickening comments
Katrina Gorry has defended Sam Kerr after an Australian politician accused the Matildas star of 'deliberately depriving' her baby son of a father. Gorry, who shares daughter Harper and son Koby with her fiancée Clara Markstedt, hit back after Family First party national director Lyle Shelton made the vile comments last month. Shelton spoke out just after Kerr and her fiancée Kristie Mewis announced the arrival of their son Jagger, writing, 'A baby is born - but where's dad? 'Family first congratulates Sam Kerr and Kristie Mewis on the birth of their son - but we must speak a truth too many are afraid to say. 'No child should be deliberately deprived of their father. Children aren't lifestyle accessories - they're human beings with rights.' Shelton went on to ask: 'When cultural elites cheer on choices that sideline dads, who's left standing for the child?' Gorry slammed the statement and others like it as she said the gender of a child's parents has nothing to do with the quality of their care. 'When I look at my kids, they're full of love, they're full of hapiness,' she told News Corp. 'Yeah, they don't have a dad, but they've got two mums. 'Harper thinks it's pretty cool that she's got two mums and I see the life that they live. 'I've seen kids being brought up with a mum and a dad and [they're] not treated the same way. 'And I think if you're two healthy parents and you can give them love and happiness, then what's left to give? 'It shouldn't matter if you're a male or female. It should just matter if you can love the child and give them everything that they need.' Gorry added that she and her partner spent a lot of money to have their children through IVF, 'and I think that says more than anything' about how much they care for their kids. The Matildas midfielder (pictured with Harper and Koby) will marry Markstedt on June 15 The 32-year-old midfielder - who will marry Clarkstedt on June 15 - recently opened up about her four-year battle with a debilitating eating disorder. 'I couldn't even get out of bed, I just couldn't see how I was ever going to feel better,' she said. 'I didn't want to go to training or social events, or even play football, something I once loved. 'I lost all joy in life.' In 2017, Gorry was living and playing in Japan when her life started to spiral out of control following the breakdown of a long-term relationship. The then 25-year-old needed to regain control of her circumstances and soon developed an eating disorder. Gorry sought help from a psychologist, but says the turning point in her recovery was becoming pregnant with her first child Harper in 2020. 'My recovery journey has been long and gradual, with ups and downs. 'I finally admitted to my psychologist that I needed help. 'I just needed to open up to someone who would listen, they didn't need to fix me, they just needed to be there and listen. 'One of the biggest shifts came when I became pregnant, that's when I realised how much I loved and appreciated my body and how much respect I had for it.'
