Selangor Ruler: Stop using the term ‘Sisters in Islam'

PETALING JAYA: Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah wants Sisters In Islam (SIS) Forum Malaysia to stop using the term 'Sisters in Islam' in any form of publication on any platform associated with the company. This is to ensure the word 'Islam' is not arbitrarily used for the benefit and interests of the organisation, the Ruler said while expressing his disappointment over the Federal Court's decision that SIS Forum, being a company, could not be subjected to the fatwa issued by the Selangor Islamic Religious Council (Mais). Earlier yesterday, the Federal Court, in a 3-1 majority decision, held that the SIS Forum, being a company, could not be subjected to the fatwa issued by Mais, as only individuals professing Islam, not companies, fall under its purview. 'His Royal Highness is in agreement with the contents of the statement issued by Mais concerning this latest decision. 'His Royal Highness emphasised that the misuse of the word 'Islam' in the name and publications of SIS Forum (Malaysia) could cause confusion among the Muslim community. 'In light of the Federal Court's decision, the Sultan of Selangor, as the Head of Islam in the state, urges SIS Forum to cease using the term 'Sisters in Islam' in any form of publication on any platform associated with the company, so that the word 'Islam' is not arbitrarily used for the benefit and interests of the organisation,' according to the Selangor Royal Office Facebook page. Mais chairman Senator Datuk Salehuddin Saidin stated that the court's decision indirectly interferes with the process of issuing and applying fatwas related to Islamic legal matters. He said Mais did not agree with part of the apex court's majority decision but instead it supported fully the dissenting view by one of the judges. 'Mais also expresses concern that the majority decision of the Federal Court in this case may open the door for certain irresponsible groups to hide behind the name of Islam within a company, organisation or institution in order to practise and spread deviant teachings that go against Islamic teachings, thereby avoiding enforcement action against them. 'If left unaddressed, it may lead to confusion and could jeopardise the faith (aqidah) of Muslims,' he said. Meanwhile, Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Dr Mohd Na'im Mokhtar said the government will study the implications of the court judgment to safeguard the role of fatwa institutions. He said in a statement that fatwas continue to play an important role in providing Syariah-based guidance on contemporary issues affecting the Muslim community. 'In light of this, strong cooperation between the judiciary, legislature and religious authorities is important to ensure the function and credibility of fatwa institutions are respected within our constitutional framework,' he said.

Mais urges haj scam victims to lodge police reports immediately

SHAH ALAM: Victims of fraudulent haj packages are urged to lodge police reports immediately and provide all relevant information to facilitate stern legal action against the syndicates or individuals involved. Selangor Islamic Religious Council (Mais) chairman Datuk Salehuddin Saidin said prosecuting those involved in haj fraud is crucial to eradicating such practices and protecting Muslims from falling victim to scams. He also advised prospective pilgrims to verify the background and legitimacy of haj service providers by referring to the official list of licensed Hajj Pilgrimage Organisers (PJH) on the Lembaga Tabung Haji website. "Be cautious of offers that are too cheap or even free, as this is usually the modus operandi of fraudsters. "Also, immediately report any suspicious activity to the authorities for further action," he said in a statement today. The Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, earlier expressed his sadness and disappointment over the increase in haj package fraud cases involving Muslims in the country. In a post on the Selangor Royal Office's Facebook page, His Royal Highness decreed that firm action be taken against any individual or travel agency offering haj packages that exploit and deceive Muslims. He expressed his disappointment at the latest incident reported by the media, in which more than 80 prospective pilgrims were left stranded at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA), believed to be due to fake packages offered by syndicates.

Mais introduces PPI card to combat fraud in asset management

SHAH ALAM: The Selangor Islamic Religious Council (Mais) will introduce the Islamic Inheritance Planner (PPI) card for all registered agents as part of an initiative to prevent fraud in asset management. Its chairman Datuk Salehuddin Saidin said the PPI card is a unique document which offers several features, including an appointment reference number, validity date, and the agent's photo and name, helping to protect the public from scams when using their services. "The initiative is viewed as an early prevention measure to protect Muslims from falling victim to fraud, allowing the card to differentiate between legitimate agents and others. "At the same time, Mais wants the public to understand the role of PPI, which was created to help Muslims manage their inheritance in accordance with Islamic law, at an affordable cost,' he told reporters here on Wednesday (April 30). Salehuddin said Mais charges as little as RM300 for the will or hibah (conditional gift) process, aiming to ease the burden on the B40 group in planning such matters. He added that the initiative could also increase knowledge, awareness and confidence among Muslims about the importance of property matters, especially wills and hibah. He said that so far, Mais has appointed 63 accredited agents and plans to double this number in the future, to expand the reach of PPI services across Selangor. Earlier, Salehuddin attended the Media and Strategic Partner Appreciation Ceremony to honour media practitioners who have collaborated in covering Mais news throughout 2024. – Bernama
