Body of Bera mum who saved toddler found after 3-day search

BERA: A 31-year-old housewife who was swept away by strong currents after the car she was in rolled into Sungai Triang on June 9 has been found drowned. The body of Sakirah Akop was discovered some 2.5km from where she was last seen, at 8.12am today. District police chief Superintendent Zulkiflee Nazir said joggers had spotted the body floating near the riverbank. "The body was located about 2.5km from the point where she fell into the river. A search and rescue team was deployed by boat to retrieve the remains. "The body was brought to the Sungai Triang jetty near the Kerayong wet market at around 9am and subsequently sent to the forensic unit at Bera Hospital for a post-mortem," he said in a statement today. In the 1.30pm incident on June 9, Sakirah and her 16-month-old daughter had accompanied her husband, a 32-year-old soldier, on a fishing trip at Sungai Triang. The mother and daughter were inside their Perodua Bezza, which had been parked along the riverbank, when it suddenly rolled forward. Sakirah managed to hand her daughter to her husband just moments before the vehicle plunged into the river. Yesterday, military divers from the 22nd Commando Regiment Special Service Group recovered the Bezza at 10.45am, about 40m from the spot where it entered the river. However, Sakirah was not found inside the car.

BERA: Trapped in the surging waters, a mother managed to hand her 16-month-old daughter to her husband just moments before she was swept away by the strong currents after their car plunged into Sungai Triang earlier today. Housewife Sakirah Akop, 31, showed extraordinary love and courage when the Perodua Bezza she was in with her daughter suddenly rolled down a riverbank and into Sungai Triang near the Kerayong wet market around 1.45pm. Prior to the incident, Sakirah and her daughter had accompanied her husband, a 32-year-old army personnel, on a fishing trip by the river. Bera district police chief Superintendent Zulkiflee Nazir said the family had arrived at the riverbank at around 1.30pm. "Sakirah and her daughter remained inside the car while her husband was fishing by the river. "The car was parked about eight metres from where her husband was standing. "About 15 minutes later, the car suddenly rolled forward and plunged into the river. "Before the vehicle was fully submerged, Sakirah managed to hand the girl to her husband. "Moments later, she was swept away by the strong currents and is feared drowned," he said in a statement today. Zulkiflee said the Bera police station was alerted at 1.50pm, and search and rescue (SAR) operations began around 2.15pm. He said Fire and Rescue Department divers from the Bukit Angin Water Rescue Unit in Temerloh conducted dives at a depth of six metres to find the victim. SAR operations were suspended at 6.20pm due to heavy rain and will resume at 8am tomorrow.
