Third Thursdays in Old Sacramento aim to bring more locals to historic district
Old Sacramento is trying to bounce back from a big loss this week after a fire tore through one of its most popular and oldest shops. More than a dozen businesses are kicking off a new event that showcases the one-of-a-kind crafts and merchandise that can't be found anywhere else in Sacramento. The historic business district is trying to bring in more customers by creating a new monthly event called Third Thursdays. It's a chance for people to learn from local artists and creators. "It's a fun demonstration night, behind-the-scenes night with different businesses around the district," said Chelsea Evans, Old Sacramento district director. At Blueprint, they're teaching customers how to brew the perfect cup of coffee at home. "The big one is the blooming process," said Chase Garibaldi, manager of Blueprint Coffee Project. "That's when the water and coffee grounds meet each other for the first time." At Threadeco Boutique, they're showing people how to mend holes and fix buttons on their own clothing instead of tossing it in the trash. "There's really something for everyone down here," Threadeco owner Maggie Baker said. One of Old Sac's most popular spots, Evangeline's Novelties and Costumes Shop, temporarily closed due to a fire early this week. Some people may have security concerns due to violent crimes in the past, but the stores behind this new marketing campaign hope it will ultimately encourage more local customers to support these locally owned businesses. "I think a lot of people think of Old Sacramento in terms of candy and coming down for the holidays, but we have so many artisans, craftspeople, really unique finds and unique gifts, and so we're really hoping to showcase that side of Old Sac," Baker said. Third Thursdays is scheduled to run through the summer and fall and could be extended if it becomes a popular monthly event. "My hope is that the locals understand that they can come down here to Old Sacramento for a great evening and not just come down when your aunt and uncle come to town," said Glow Studio owner Katy Karns. "It's going to be ever changing, so each month you can come down on the third thursday and there will be different demonstrations," Evans said.

Sacramento celebrates Juneteenth with events held citywide
Thursday marked the 160th anniversary of Juneteenth and freedom for Black Americans. The federal holiday recognizes the official end of slavery through the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation by President Abraham Lincoln. Still, enslaved people in Texas did not find out they were free until nearly two years later on June 19th, 1865. Since then, the 19th of June represents a day to celebrate freedom and community. CBS13 stopped by four different Juneteenth events happening across Sacramento on Thursday. In Oak Park, music and dancing lifted up Sacramento's Black community with a block party organized by St. Hope and Esther's Park. "We have Black vendors, Black DJs. We are celebrating us as a community," said organizer Kristen Martin. The block party was sold out, welcoming hundreds out to celebrate until 10 p.m. as the community came together in joy. "We have the day off, it's a federal holiday for us to celebrate Juneteenth. We are excited for us all to come together to celebrate this day," said Martin. The day's events focused on freedom, progress and culture. At the California State Capitol on Thursday afternoon, the California Black Agriculture Working Group celebrated the 160th anniversary of Juneteenth with music, vendors and educational resource booths for the community. Children performed traditional songs for the crowd. "It means advancement for my people. Dr. King would be proud as well. Oh my god, he would be bubbling over," said Terry Dison, a vendor at the event. In midtown, the free Juneteenth Art Walk took place all afternoon on Thursday. The celebration was a vibrant, music-filled parade and event lifting up voices, creativity and legacy. "Vendors, food, performances. It's gonna be a full day of art and joy and community and celebration," organizers told CBS13. At the California State Library, Sacramento Juneteenth Inc. hosted its 22nd annual Juneteenth VIP reception, and speakers offered a reminder of the day's meaning. "It's important because it's American history. The African American experience in America needs to be talked about. History does not need to be whitewashed or deleted," said Greg Simon, executive director of Sacramento Juneteenth, Inc. At the ceremony, difference makers in Sacramento were honored with the "Community Soldier Award." "Pleshette Robertson, Theo Dickson, as well as Mr. Antonio Harvey. Each year, we give out this award to those unheralded heroes doing work for the community, in the community," said Simon. The celebrations continue into the weekend. Friday and Saturday, Sacramento's Juneteenth Southern Soul Festival will be held in William Land Park featuring musical performances, a parade, a fashion show, more than 80 vendors and much more. More than 5,000 people are expected to attend.

New Offseason Targets Emerge For Sacramento Kings Amid Uncertain Future
New Offseason Targets Emerge For Sacramento Kings Amid Uncertain Future originally appeared on Athlon Sports. A 40-42 record in the 2024-25 NBA season has left the Sacramento Kings in the worst spot to be for a team: the middle. The Kings are not quite bad enough to bottom out. However, they are not nearly good enough to compete for anything of substance. Advertisement A shakeup to the Kings front office is expected to get some movement in one direction of the other. Scott Perry will look to make his mark on the team after taking over as the new general manager. The question Kings fans are asking is which direction will the new executive pick. NBA insider Jake Fischer offered some clues. Fischer reported that Sacramento will be looking to address that concern. The NBA insider wrote, "At the opposite end of the lineup spectrum, Sacramento has continued to evaluate its point guard options, according to league sources." Advertisement Fischer continued: "New general manager Scott Perry, remember, immediately highlighted the Kings' need for improved playmaking during his introductory press conference and sources have duly linked Sacramento to various guards known to be available this summer." The NBA reporter revealed, "That list includes [Jrue] Holiday in Boston and Marcus Smart in Washington ... and stretches to more affordable free agent ballhandlers like Malcolm Brogdon." The Kings have done themselves no favors of late at the lead guard position. It is tremendously ironic considering they once had more than what they knew to do with at that spot. After landing an absolute steal with the 12th overall pick in the 2020 NBA Draft, Sacramento infamously traded Tyrese Haliburton away to the Indiana Pacers. Haliburton has led his team to a 2-1 NBA Finals lead. Advertisement The Kings chose to prioritize De'Aaron Fox over Haliburton. However, Fox is gone now too, having been traded to the San Antonio Spurs this past season. If the goal is attempting to be competitive, a move for one of the targeted names would help. However, none of those guards come close to rivaling either former Kings point guard. Sacramento Kings Set to Pursue 2 All-Star Guards as 'Long-Term Solution'
Sacramento Kings Set to Pursue 2 All-Star Guards as 'Long-Term Solution' originally appeared on Athlon Sports. A lot of the talk surrounding the Sacramento Kings and their plans for this offseason has been about selling. However, the team may surprisingly pass on that approach. Advertisement A 40-42 season that featured a loss to the Dallas Mavericks in the NBA Play-In Tournament does not come off as a situation to build on. That feels especially true considering the departure of former franchise point guard De'Aaron Fox via trade. However, it is that precise exit that has the Kings considering all their options heading into the offseason. Recent trade rumors are suggesting Sacramento could be buyers in an effort to replace Fox for the long-term. Darius Garland of the Cleveland Cavaliers and Trae Young of the Atlanta Hawks are the two names to monitor for Sacramento. Advertisement Garland is coming off one of his better campaigns as a pro. The Cavaliers guard averaged 20.6 points, 6.7 assists, and 1.2 steals, while shooting 47.2 percent from the field and 40.1 percent from beyond the arc. Despite the stellar play, the Cavaliers fell to the Indiana Pacers in the second round of the NBA Playoffs. The result has led to the door being open in Cleveland for a shakeup to their current core. Young delivered another season that fans are accustomed to by now. The Hawks guard averaged a double-double, with 24.2 points and 11.6 assists per game. However, efficiency issues plagued Young this year. The Hawks offensive engine only managed to shoot 41.1 percent from the field and 34.0 percent from 3-point. Advertisement Either one of these two guards would make for a serviceable long-term replacement for Fox. The question with either one of those additions would still involve a debate regarding the overall ceiling of that group.
