State to survey lakes with drones, rovers

Bengaluru: To eliminate the need for repeated surveys of lakes and improve conservation efforts, the state survey and settlement department (SSLR) has switched to high-tech digital mapping, using drones and rovers. This large-scale effort, covering thousands of waterbodies, is expected to modernise how the state tracks its lakes and prevent encroachments. SSLR commissioner J Manjunath said. "We will also mark buffer zones of the lakes during the survey. This digital survey will be helpful to preserve, conserve, and protect the lakes," he added. To manage the data generated from these surveys, the department has developed dedicated software named Web GiS, which will serve as a centralised database for various govt agencies. Each surveyed lake's file will include its exact GPS coordinates, survey numbers, boundaries, extent, ownership (govt department or agency), encroachment details if any, and survey sketches. In the past two years alone, digital surveys were completed for 8,433 lakes using drones and rovers. These details have already been uploaded on Web GiS. Officials estimate only 6,210 lakes remain to be digitally mapped. This final leg of the digital survey is expected to be completed by Dec 31, 2025. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Esse novo alarme com câmera é quase gratuito em Ibiraci (consulte o preço) Alarmes Undo Overall, the department has identified 41,849 lakes across Karnataka. Traditional survey methods using chains and compasses had earlier been used to survey 27,206 lakes. The department adopted the digital approach to complete the survey of the remaining 14,643 lakes, of which 8,433 have been digitally mapped. Initially, the Web GiS data will be restricted to govt agencies, but officials say the data will later be made public, enhancing transparency and access.

Bank Negara, Recoda team up to improve financial reach in rural Sarawak

Mohd Safri (sixth right) presents a memento to Rantai, while others look on. MIRI (June 13): The Highland Development Agency (HDA) office recently hosted a courtesy visit from Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) Regional Office Kuching, led by its Head Rantai Naga, in conjunction with the central bank's working visit to Miri. The visit reinforced BNM's strategic commitment to ensuring that all Malaysians – especially those in rural and remote areas – have access to financial services. This includes physical access via Financial Access Points (FAPs), bank agents (EBs), cash recycle machines (CRM), and conventional bank branches or digital platforms. According to the Regional Corridor Development Authority (Recoda), six 'mukims' (districts) in Sarawak still lack FAP coverage. This includes three in the Miri Division – Bario, Mulu, and Long Bedian. During the session, Recoda director (Project Management Division) Mohammad Safri Ibrahim provided a comprehensive briefing on the proposed road network in northern Sarawak. This includes Northern Coastal Highway (NCH), Sarawak-Sabah Link Road (SSLR) Phase 1 & Phase 2, Miri-Marudi-Mulu-Long Lama, Sarawak Border Road (Long Banga-Bario-Bakelalan), as well as plans to improve rural connectivity between Long Lama and Long Bedian. The Public Works Department (JKR) Sarawak, led by SSLR project manager John Wong, presented an update on the current progress of SSLR Phases 1 and 2 during the visit. 'The improved infrastructure is expected to further facilitate financial inclusion and spur socio-economic growth in highland communities,' said Recoda. The collaboration between stakeholders underlines the importance of integrated planning that supports not only infrastructure but also financial accessibility in underserved communities, it added. Sabah-Sarawak Link Road Phase 1 surpasses 50% completion

KUCHING: The construction of the Sarawak-Sabah Link Road (SSLR), a vital infrastructure project designed to connect remote areas in northern Sarawak with Sabah, is progressing steadily, having reached significant milestones as of April this year. Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas said SSLR Phase 1 has achieved 52.27 per cent physical progress and is on schedule for completion by the fourth quarter of 2026. 'For SSLR Phase 2, construction works have commenced across all packages, involving site clearing, earthworks and drainage works. 'As of April 2025, overall physical progress stands at 0.93 per cent and is expected to be completed by the third quarter of 2029,' he said during the winding-up speech for his ministry at the Sarawak State Legislative Assembly sitting here, today. SSLR project, which aimed to provide a road network that connects Limbang, Miri, Lawas and Sabah without going through Brunei, was approved in phases by the federal government in 2021. On the progress of Trans Borneo Highway (LTB) development, Uggah, who is also state Minister of Infrastructure and Port Development said that the project also continues to move forward, with the Miri section currently in its design stage and scheduled for finalisation by the second quarter of this year. 'Meanwhile, the procurement proposal for the Limbang and Lawas sections have been submitted to the federal's Ministry of Works for approval by the Lembaga Perolehan (LP). 'The Miri section is expected to be tendered in the third quarter of 2025, while the Limbang and Lawas sections are expected to be awarded in the first quarter of 2026,' he said.

Lawas MP: Cross-border cooperation key to spurring Adan rice market

Henry (fourth left) strikes the gong to officiate the event while others look on. MIRI (May 28): Lawas Member of Parliament Datuk Henry Sum Agong has called on the Lun Bawang community in the highlands of Lawas to strengthen ties not only among themselves but also with neighbouring communities in Long Bawan, North Kalimantan, in a joint effort to enhance Adan rice production. Speaking at officiating ceremony the 4th Adan Rice Festival at Buduk Nur last Friday, Henry said such collaborations would not only help increase output to meet growing local demand, but also open doors to wider markets. 'With stronger cross-border networking, Adan rice production can be scaled up not just for local consumption but also for markets beyond our borders,' he said at the annual event, held about 150km from Lawas town. Currently, access to Ba Kelalan from Lawas is only possible via four-wheel drive (4WD) vehicles, with the journey taking between four to five hours depending on road conditions. However, Henry said travel time would be significantly reduced once ongoing Sabah-Sarawak Link Road (SSLR) project is completed within the next five years. 'This infrastructure upgrade will make it easier, faster, and more cost-effective to transport Adan rice to Lawas and other areas, benefiting farmers on both sides of the border,' he elaborated. Henry noted that demand for Adan rice ― known for its unique aroma and texture ― continues to be encouraging. He also expressed confidence that improved connectivity will spur the growth of other highland crops and promote eco-tourism development in the area. Earlier, community leader Penghulu Udan Meru announced that in light of the festival's growing popularity, it has been renamed the Adan Rice Festival from this year onwards, dropping the earlier 'Ba Kelalan' reference to give it a broader appeal. The festival featured various traditional games, cultural performances, and exhibitions by government agencies aimed at promoting local agriculture and rural entrepreneurship.
