Review cases of top SPM students denied IPT places
BAGAN DATUK: Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has urged the Ministry of Higher Education to review applications from outstanding Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) students who were unsuccessful in securing a place at institutions of higher learning. He said that compassion and fairness must be shown to these students regardless of race, as they not only excelled in their examinations but are also the hope of their parents. 'For any student who did not gain admission into matriculation colleges, foundation programmes, or first-year degree courses, I hope they will be assisted in securing a place. Although I understand places are limited, they should be treated fairly, and efforts must be made to ensure they are given a place,' he said. Ahmad Zahid, who is also chairman of the National Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Council, told reporters this after launching the 'Kembara Kesedaran Pendidikan Anak Desa (KeDESA) Didik MADANI 2025' programme at Politeknik Bagan Datuk today. Yesterday, it was announced that 150,557 SPM 2024 holders had received offers to continue their studies at public institutions of higher education, with 86,589 placed in public universities, 42,058 in polytechnics, 20,427 in community colleges and 1,483 in institutions under MARA's Higher Education Division. Ahmad Zahid also said he had requested the TVET Council Secretariat and the Malaysian Technical University Network (MTUN) to consider admitting outstanding students with Malaysian Skills Certificates (SKM) Level 3 to 5 into MTUN institutions. 'For MTUN, in my view, each institution provides around 2,500 places. With six universities, that gives us 15,000 places. I hope SKM graduates who did not gain admission into public universities can submit an appeal to enter MTUN,' he said. Meanwhile, KeDESA Didik MADANI 2025 Main Committee chairman and adviser to the Bumiputera Education Movement of Malaysia, Datuk Nurulhidayah Ahmad Zahid, said the programme aims to raise awareness and provide access to higher education for students from rural and remote areas. In her speech, she said the GPBM-organised programme applies the 4M concept – identifying qualified and needy students, understanding their socio-economic background and potential, raising awareness of the importance of education, and guiding students to the right channels to further their studies. She said that in 2024, a total of 10 programmes were held across three states – Perak, Kelantan and Terengganu – with a total attendance of nearly 10,000 participants. At the same event, Ahmad Zahid, who is also the Member of Parliament for Bagan Datuk, presented awards and aid to outstanding SPM 2024 students from the Bagan Datuk constituency.

Ramanan allocates RM100,000 to upgrade school facilities in Sungai Buloh
KUALA LUMPUR: Sungai Buloh Member of Parliament Datuk Seri R. Ramanan, who is also Deputy Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Minister, has allocated RM100,000 under the Mesra Rakyat Project (PMR) to upgrade facilities at two secondary schools in his constituency. The allocation involves SMK Sierramas and SMK Seksyen 4 Kota Damansara, each receiving RM50,000 for the construction of covered walkways, new classrooms, canteen repairs and other basic facilities that are in urgent need of maintenance. "We want the children of Sungai Buloh to have access to the best education. Their schools must be equipped with safe, student-friendly facilities. This is an investment in the nation's future," said Ramanan, who is also PKR vice president, when officiating the programme on Saturday (June 14). During the event, he also announced that over 10 outstanding SPM 2024 students from both schools would receive Special Education Incentives from Yayasan Bank Rakyat next week in recognition of their academic achievements. Ramanan also personally contributed RM6,000 to SPM Excellence Award recipients from SMK Seksyen 4 Kota Damansara. – Bernama

Ramanan allocates RM100,000 for two schools in Sungai Buloh constituency
KUALA LUMPUR: Sungai Buloh member of parliament Datuk Seri R. Ramanan has allocated RM100,000 under the People-Friendly Project (PMR) initiative to upgrade facilities at two secondary schools in his constituency. SMK Sierramas and SMK Seksyen 4 Kota Damansara will each receive RM50,000 to fund the construction of covered walkways, additional classrooms, and repairs to canteens and other essential infrastructure requiring urgent maintenance. Ramanan, who is also Deputy Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Minister, said the initiative was aimed at creating a safer and more conducive learning environment in line with the growing student population and evolving educational needs. "We want the children of Sungai Buloh to have access to the best education possible. "Their schools must be equipped with facilities that support learning and ensure safety. "This is an investment in the nation's future," he said during a visit to both schools today. During the same event, Ramanan also announced that over 10 outstanding SPM 2024 students from the two schools would receive special education incentives from Yayasan Bank Rakyat next week in recognition of their academic achievements. As a gesture of personal support, he also contributed RM6,000 to SPM Excellence Award recipients from SMK Seksyen 4 Kota Damansara. Ramanan was also briefed on the school's improved average grade score for the 2024 SPM examinations, which he said was a testament to the collective efforts of teachers, parents and students. "These initiatives reflect the Sungai Buloh parliamentary constituency's ongoing commitment to strengthening the education ecosystem, not just in terms of infrastructure, but also in recognising students' hard work and achievements," he said.

He said long-standing water problems, including at higher learning institutions like Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), continue to burden students. Advertisement 'In several meetings with university students, they raised their concerns over this issue. Some are forced to buy mineral water or rely on donations just for bathing and drinking. 'This not only affects their comfort but also disrupts their focus on their studies,' he said after officiating the SPM 2024 Excellence Incentive and Appreciation Programme, here. 'The State's water problem has dragged on for years, mainly due to management weaknesses, including at the Sabah Water Department. Shafie also touched on the sharp increase in cooking gas cylinder prices, which have now soared to over RM70 per unit. 'Sabah is the second largest gas producer after Sarawak. It is unfair that our own people should bear this high cost,' he said. He said he would raise the issue in the upcoming Parliament session. During the event, more than 100 top SPM 2024 students from across Semporna were celebrated. Shafie expressed pride in their achievements and said he would continue to support efforts to develop the State's education sector. 167 top Hindu SPM scorers receive cash awards from PHEB

GEORGE TOWN : A total of 167 Hindu students from 37 schools in Penang who scored 7As and above in the 2024 SPM examination received a total of RM70,200 in cash awards today. Chief minister Chow Kon Yeow said the initiative by the Penang Hindu Endowments Board (PHEB) recognised academic excellence and reflected the state's ongoing commitment to educational development. 'I am extremely proud of the 819 candidates in Penang who obtained straight As in the 2024 SPM exam,' he said at the award presentation at Kompleks Masyarakat Penyayang here today. Chow said as of May this year, PHEB had allocated around RM1.5 million to support 1,217 students across the state. PHEB deputy chairman Senator Dr RA Lingeshwaran said this was the second consecutive year the board had recognised outstanding Hindu students in the SPM examination. He said each student would receive RM50 for every A, with amounts ranging from RM350 for 7As to RM550 for 11As. The most outstanding scorer with 9A+, Darshini Subash Sun from SMK Hussein Onn, received a trophy, laptop and RM450. Kuhan Tharman, an 8A student from SMJK Chung Ling, received RM400. Lingeshwaran said that between 2023 and May 2025, PHEB had channelled RM883,607 into education aid for students pursuing certificate, diploma and degree programmes, as well as welfare assistance. In total, nearly RM1 million had been spent, benefitting at least 1,028 Hindus in Penang, he said. 'This year, PHEB received RM2 million in state funding, up from RM1.5 million last year,' he said.
