The report further highlighted the need for a consistent supply and maintenance of medical equipment through the Odisha State Medical Corporation Limited to ensure uninterrupted hospital services. Among the new initiatives proposed was the establishment of a centre of excellence for sickle cell anaemia at SLNMCH. Additionally, a 200-seater rest shed for patients' attendants was suggested, with a proposal to mobilize Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) funds for its development. The district administration has been directed to identify and allocate suitable land for this facility. Officials said these recommendations are aimed at strengthening the overall healthcare infrastructure in the tribal-dominated district and enhancing service delivery to the underserved population.

Probe ordered into death of 5 patients in SLN Hospital
Koraput: Two investigations were ordered after five patients died due to alleged negligence at the State-run Saheed Laxman Nayak Medical College and Hospital in Koraput, officials said on Wednesday. Two men and three women died on Tuesday night within a short span of time. Their families alleged that they were administered injections, following which they died. The deceased persons were identified as Shukra Majhi, Rukuni Pentia, Phulmati Majhi, Bhagaban Parija and Bati Khara. SLNMCH's Superintendent Susanta Kumar Sahu said a departmental inquiry has been ordered. 'We have convened a meeting of all departmental heads. The patients who died on Tuesday night were admitted to the hospital in a critical condition. Prima facie, the deaths seem not to have been caused by any wrong injection. However, we will inquire into the allegations,' he said. Sahu said the patients in the ICU were in a serious condition and were administered the injection to control their dropping blood pressure. He said two of the five deceased patients suffered abdominal injuries, while another suffered from liver perforation. 'We suspect they died due to bleeding and septicemia. The fourth patient was being treated for stage 4 cancer, and the fifth was an accident victim, who was referred from Jeypore,' he said. Director of Medical Education and Training (DMET) Santosh Mishra also ordered a separate inquiry into the allegations. A five-member team, comprising three doctors from MKCG Medical College Hospital in Berhampur and two from SCB Medical College Hospital in Cuttack, will probe the allegations, he said. 'The team has been asked to submit the report by Thursday,' Mishra said. Koraput District Collector Keerthi Vasan told mediapersons that a high-level committee has been constituted to probe the allegations of medical negligence and find out the causes of deaths. He also assured that the district administration would seek the assistance of the State government, if needed. The Collector claimed that as the SLNMCH, Koraput is a tertiary care centre, mostly the seriously ill patients are referred to the medical college for advanced treatment. The families of the deceased held a demonstration outside the hospital, following which police were deployed. The bodies were handed over to the families after post-mortem examination. 'Each family was given a cheque of Rs 10,000 from the district Red Cross fund. Arrangements were made to transport the bodies to the villages of the deceased patients,' a district official said. Congress Legislature Party leader Rama Chandra Kadam demanded Rs 25 lakh each as compensation for the families of the deceased.

Six die within hours in Koraput medical college, government orders probe
JEYPORE/BHUBANESWAR: At least six patients of Saheed Laxman Nayak Medical College and Hospital (SLN MCH) in Koraput perished in a span of hours late on Tuesday, prompting the state government to order an inquiry after kin of the deceased brought up allegations of medical negligence. Sources said five patients, aged 27 to 45, suffering from cancer, stab and head injuries, died during treatment on Tuesday night while another died on Wednesday morning. Four of the five were admitted to the ICU of surgery department and the remaining two were in the wards. Family members of the patients admitted to the ICU alleged that they developed serious complications minutes after a nursing staff administered an injection and died in a quick succession. The deceased were identified as Sukra Majhi (Semiliguda), Rukmi Penthia (Ambaguda), Phulamati Majhi (Kalahandi), Bhagaban Paraja and Jagannath Pujari (Borigumma) besides Bati Khara (Koraput). The deceased included a road accident victim, a cancer patient and two liver patients, besides two others, who were admitted following a stabbing incident. Sources said the ICU patients were administered Norepinephrine injection, which usually helps stabilise blood pressure. 'My brother died nearly 15 minutes after he was administered the injection,' alleged Jagannath's brother.

Govt orders probe after 6 patients die in Koraput hospital
1 2 Koraput: State govt on Wednesday ordered an inquiry after six patients died at Saheed Laxman Nayak Medical College and Hospital (SLNMCH) in Koraput on Tuesday night and early on Wednesday. Shukra Majhi (45), Rukmani Penthia (47), Phulamati Majhi (50), Bati Khara (40) and Bhagaban Parija (36) died between 10 pm and 11 pm. Four deaths occurred in the intensive care unit (ICU), while Parija passed away in the general surgery ward. Jagannath Pujari (29), who was being treated for head injury, died at 3:33 am. All victims except Phulamati, who was from Kalahandi district, were residents of Koraput district. The deaths sparked outrage, with relatives alleging medical negligence. "My cousin was recovering after surgery in the ICU but died shortly after receiving an injection. We suspect he was administered the wrong one," claimed a relative of Parija. Grieving families and locals staged protest on the hospital premises, demanding strict action against those responsible for the deaths. He said all patients were critically ill — one had stage IV cervical cancer, two had sustained stabbing injuries, one had a liver ailment, and another was battling septicaemia. The hospital has initiated an internal review examining medical records and administered drugs. Koraput collector Keerthi Vasan V said preliminary investigations found no evidence of medical negligence, though a full inquiry is pending. A high-level probe team, comprising senior experts from SCB Medical College, Cuttack, and MKCG Medical College, Berhampur, has been formed to investigate the incident. The team is expected to submit its findings within 48 hours after visiting the Koraput hospital on Thursday. Police forces were deployed at the hospital to maintain order as protests intensified. The bodies have been sent for post-mortem to determine the exact causes of death. Congress member and former MLA Nimai Sarkar alleged, "Such incidents are common at Koraput medical college. Tribal people from remote areas are being neglected, and medical services have completely collapsed." BJP's Koraput MLA Raghuram Machha assured that a thorough investigation would be conducted. "Two professors from Cuttack and three from MKCG Medical College will investigate the deaths. Anyone found guilty will not be spared," he said, emphasising the state govt's commitment to quality healthcare in tribal regions. The health department has promised stringent action against those found responsible based on the investigation report, expected by Thursday evening. The district administration has provided financial assistance of Rs 10,000 from district Red Cross Fund to the bereaved families of Rukmani, Parija and Pujari. "Details of other three deceased patients have been sought so that their families could be provided financial assistance," said Subrat Sahu, district emergency officer, Koraput.
