Sabah chamber bridges cultural and economic exchange with Zhang Clan delegation

A group photo of the Sabah China Chamber of Commerce members and the Zhang Clan delegation. KOTA KINABALU (June 21): The Sabah China Chamber of Commerce (SCCC) is committed to building a bridge for economic, trade and cultural exchanges between China and Sabah. Guided by the principle of mutual cooperation and win-win development, the Chamber actively promotes the rich heritage of traditional Chinese culture. This was expressed on Friday by SCCC president Datuk Frankie Liew during an exchange session held at the SCCC conference room with a 14-member delegation from China led by President Zhang Huaxia of the Hui Gong Cultural Committee of China (Zhang Clan Association of China) and the Beijing Hui Gong Cultural Development Centre (Zhang Clan Association of Beijing). Liew stated that this meeting was more than a cultural exchange — it also symbolized the deep kinship between the two associations and celebrated the grand opening of the new Sabah Zhang Clan Association building. He praised the dedication and enthusiasm of the Zhang Clan representatives, calling the occasion a moving testament to the enduring strength of ancestral bonds. The new building is not only a milestone for Zhang clan members in Sabah, but also a powerful symbol of the thriving development of Zhang clan culture abroad. It contributes to greater unity and cohesion among Zhang clan members worldwide. He emphasized that since its founding, the Sabah China Chamber of Commerce has worked to serve as a vital platform for economic and cultural collaboration between Sabah and China. He noted that Zhang clan culture, as a brilliant gem of traditional Chinese heritage, reflects values such as solidarity, mutual support and perseverance — all of which align with the Chamber's philosophy of cooperative and mutually beneficial growth. 'This meeting is both a joyful reunion and a new beginning for deeper cooperation,' he said. 'Under the outstanding leadership of President Zhang Huaxia, we believe the grand opening of the Sabah Zhang Clan Association's new building will serve as a launchpad for broader and more in-depth collaborations — whether in cultural heritage, business, or community engagement — helping to promote Chinese traditional values while advancing prosperity on both sides.' Liew recalled that years ago, he was honored to attend a major Zhang Clan Association celebration in China at the invitation of Zhang. During that memorable occasion, they shared in the timeless brotherhood story of Liu Bei, Guan Yu and Zhang Fei taking the 'Peach Garden Oath' — a vow of loyalty and unity. He said this legendary tale of fraternity and righteousness remains a powerful reminder of the deep and cherished friendship between himself, Zhang, and all Zhang clan members. Liew also extended heartfelt congratulations on the successful opening of the Sabah Zhang Clan Association's new headquarters and expressed hope that, inspired by the loyalty and righteousness of Liu, Guan and Zhang, both organizations will continue to work hand-in-hand to create a new chapter of mutual success and lasting cooperation. Also present at the meeting from SCCC were Deputy President Brett Chua, Vice Presidents Ir. Ts. Tan KJ, JP, Datuk Simon Teoh, Tan Siew Ling and Chiew HH, Director of Commerce Douglas Fong, Director of Public Relations Anthony Leong, Director of VIP Reception Chin Hui Zhi, Deputy Director of VIP Reception Cheong SL and Committee Members Lucas Kwan, Chan JG, Penny Lee, Desmond Hsiu, Wong CM and Joanis Yeo. The China Zhang clan delegates were Zhang Huaxia, Jiang Li, Zhang Jundong, Zhang Ziyan, Zhang Yuelin, Zhang Ziliang, Zhang Qilun, Zhang Chunfeng, Liu Zhiwen, Zhang Zhijie, Yang Zhihua, Liu Zhenmin, Xie Yinhui and Zhang Tao.

Sandakan Municipal Council-Sandakan Chinese Chamber of Commerce collab to refurbish old, rundown Sandakan buildings

Published on: Wednesday, June 18, 2025 Published on: Wed, Jun 18, 2025 By: Winnie Kasmir Text Size: Walter (centre) with Sandakan Chinese Chamber of Commerce members. SANDAKAN: The Sandakan Municipal Council (MPS) is working hard to find building owners in the town centre as part of its plan to brighten up the area by repainting old and rundown buildings. MPS President, Walter Kenson, said the council had established a collaboration with the Sandakan Chinese Chamber of Commerce (SCCC) to refine the implementation of the programme, which aims to restore the former glory of the town centre that had become increasingly quiet and abandoned by traders and visitors. Advertisement 'The old town of Sandakan cannot be left neglected any longer. As the President of MPS, I am committed to finding ways to bring the town centre back to life.' 'One of the efforts involves repainting old buildings to give them a fresher and more appealing appearance,' he said during a press conference on Monday. A meeting session will be held on June 28 to engage shop owners in further discussions, including the provision of incentives to support this initiative. However, Walter said only 1,202 out of 2,624 premises owners had been contacted so far. 'Most of these buildings belong to people who don't live in Sandakan anymore. So, we're asking the media and the Chinese Chamber of Commerce to help spread the word and encourage them to come to the meeting,' he said. He pointed out that while building owners are responsible for repainting, MPS would provide some incentives to help lighten the cost. 'Details of the initiative will be announced on June 28. We are targeting at least 50 per cent of property owners to participate in this first phase,' he added. The programme is expected to begin once the meeting session and registration process are completed, with the aim of having the majority of buildings in the town centre repainted by the end of this year. Meanwhile, SCCC Chairman Chia Hock Ak said the association would make efforts to help trace the building owners in Sandakan town using the records maintained by SCCC. 'We'll do our best to track down these owners using the records we have. We'll also spread the word through different associations and social media,' he said. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Strengthen China edu ties: Chamber

Published on: Thursday, June 12, 2025 Published on: Thu, Jun 12, 2025 Text Size: Warm and cordial exchange between SCCC and the delegation from USST. Kota Kinabalu: Sabah China Chamber of Commerce President Datuk Frankie Liew said Malaysia, China, and Southeast Asian countries must work together to build a higher education system that possesses its own characteristics and international competitiveness. This system should cultivate future talents with a global outlook, rooted in their own culture and wisdom, to lead regional development. Advertisement 'We must build our own educational confidence and cultural strength!' he emphasized during a recent dialogue with Prof. Yue Haiyang, Vice President of the University of Shanghai for Science and Technology (USST). He noted that the recent incident in the United States, where Harvard University revoked the visas of some international students, has sparked global concern about the freedom and inclusiveness of American education. This situation has made China and Southeast Asian countries realise more deeply that only by improving the quality of their own higher education and establishing independent academic systems and education brands can they ensure sustainable talent development. Liew believes that in the current global transformation of higher education – triggered by the US's increasing exclusion of international students – strengthening educational cooperation between Malaysia and China holds significant strategic importance. During a recent visit to Sabah, Prof. Yue Haiyang paid a special visit to the CCCS and held cordial and in-depth discussions with Liew and the chamber's board members on the development of international education cooperation. Recently, USST and Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) officially signed two Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs) to launch a short-term student exchange programme between their respective business schools. Each university will select 50 students to participate in short-term academic programs at the partner institution. It is noted that USST had already begun initial exchanges last year, sending students to Sabah to experience the local academic and living environment, laying a strong foundation for this collaboration. Liew praised the cooperation between USST and UMS, noting that it would enhance academic exchanges and the sharing of research achievements in business and related fields. It will also deepen and broaden inter-university collaboration, and help raise the academic reputation and visibility of UMS on the international stage. He warmly welcomed USST's decision to partner with UMS. 'Sabah not only has a multicultural society, beautiful natural ecology, and a stable and safe social environment, but also increasingly developed higher education infrastructure and an internationalisation strategy, making it an ideal platform for international education cooperation.' He believes that this partnership will help improve the quality of education and research at both universities and promote the development of Sabah's international education industry. According to statistics, the global education and training market is currently valued at around USD 7.5 trillion, and it is projected to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 6pc to reach approximately USD 10 trillion by 2027. It is expected to continue to grow steadily over the next decade. 'Education is no longer just about cultivating talent – it has become an essential part of national strength and economic development,' Liew added. He also expressed hope that USST and UMS will continue to expand their collaboration to include joint research, education and training programs, and the commercialisation of research outcomes. Together, they can explore new areas and markets in higher education cooperation. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
