Supporters branch members step up to help struggling family

EVATON.- Orlando Pirates Greater Sebokeng Branch Supporters responded to an 'emergency' call to help a mother (47) and her grandchildren. Speaking to Sedibeng Ster Sport, Mzwakhe Zondo, who is the branch publicist, said they received a call from one of their members about the family's condition. He told Sedibeng Ster Sport that the mother and her three grandchildren are staying in a shack and don't have enough blankets or warm clothes in this cold weather. Zondo said they had to respond to the call, but when they got there, they were saddened by the family's condition. According to Zondo, the only furniture in the house is a bed and an old sofa/couch. We went there with some members of the branch to see what we could do for the family. When we got there, we were welcomed by the unfortunate living conditions and children without warm clothes. 'We were told that their mother has since left them with their grandmother, and she took the children's SASA cards,' said Zondo. 'We had to see what we could do, and I must thank our members for their generosity. We managed to organise some warm clothes, shoes, mattresses, and cooked soup for them. However, there is still much that needs to be done in that shack, and on Saturday, we will go back to plaster the house. We call on the community to come on board because even their grandmother needs some clothes. This is a sad situation, and we will do everything in our power to see how best we can help this family,' said Zondo. For more information or to donate to the family, contact 073 074 8097. Ahmedabad: Police have been unable to make any breakthrough in the suspected abduction of four-year-old Vedika Bheel from Law Garden on Saturday evening. Investigations, however, have revealed a major blind spot. All eight CCTV cameras installed inside Law Garden are defunct, highlighting Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation's (AMC) oversight. What makes the problem even more complex is that development and maintenance of gardens in different areas of the city, including CCTV cameras, has been assigned to private companies under a public-private-partnership (PPP) model. These parks include Parimal Garden in Ambawadi, Sardar Baug at Lal Darwaza, and Tilak Baug in Jamalpur. An AMC official, speaking anonymously, said the company contracted to maintain the cameras at Law Garden failed in this task. Similarly, Parimal Garden too lacks CCTV surveillance. Sources indicate that nine years ago, AMC-managed Ahmedabad Smart City Company planned setting up infrastructure under the Safe and Secure Ahmedabad (SASA) initiative, including 6,500 CCTV cameras and a command control centre, at a cost of Rs 239 crore. In 2018-19, 242 CCTV were installed at 17 traffic signals, 1,170 were set up at 75 signals in 2019-20, and 587 at 38 signals in 2020-21 at a total cost of Rs 16.20 crore. No new cameras have been installed at any signal from 2021-22 to 2023-24. Of the 1,999 installed, 1,749 are operational, though an average of five percent are non-functional. Sources further said that AMC installed 2,471 CCTV cameras at its offices, schools, civic centres and its parks and lakes of which 475 are defunct. As many as 191 cameras are not connected to the control centres, 161 have maintenance issues and 123 have no power connections. Sixteen cameras were installed at Vastrapur lake in 2016-17, but all were dismantled.

Andhra Pradesh government swaps ‘Swachh Andhra' themes for May and June to tackle seasonal challenges

In a move to address seasonal challenges, the Andhra Pradesh government has announced an interchange of themes for its Swarna Andhra–Swachha Andhra (SASA) programme for the months of May and June. The theme 'Beat the Heat,' initially slated for June, will now be observed in May, while 'Neeru–Meeru' focusing on water conservation will be implemented in June. The decision was made considering the prevailing climatic conditions to ensure more effective public engagement and better outreach outcomes. 'This adjustment would enhance the effectiveness of outreach efforts and ensure greater public participation,' Principal Secretary Municipal Administration & Urban Development Department S. Suresh Kumar said. Under the revised plan, the 'Beat the Heat' theme will drive initiatives such as the creation of early warning systems for heatwaves, distribution of water at public places through Water ATMs, promotion of cool roofs and green spaces, and special awareness campaigns for vulnerable groups. Meanwhile, the 'Neeru–Meeru' activities in June will concentrate on cleaning and constructing rainwater harvesting structures, promoting water conservation across all sectors, and implementing water scorecards to monitor conservation efforts. The SASA programme, launched in January 2025 to promote cleanliness and systemic environmental improvements, has seen massive public participation with over one crore citizens engaging in monthly activities themed around waste management, plastic reduction, and e-waste control. Reaffirming the programme's flexible approach, Mr. Suresh Kumar emphasized that while broad themes are assigned monthly, local authorities are encouraged to adapt activities based on specific regional needs to maximize impact. The government reiterated its commitment to fostering a cleaner, greener, and healthier Andhra Pradesh through sustained community involvement and strategic interventions aligned with seasonal demands.
