JFK Jr.'s nephew slams new Ryan Murphy series American Love Story: ‘For those wondering if his family was consulted…'
Ryan Murphy's upcoming series American Love Story may be bringing the romance and tragedy of JFK Jr. and Carolyn Bessette to the screen but not everyone is applauding the move. In fact, a key member of the Kennedy family has spoken out against it. The series, part of Murphy's larger American Story anthology, casts newcomer Paul Kelly as John F. Kennedy Jr. and Sarah Pidgeon as Carolyn Bessette. It will chronicle their whirlwind romance in the 1990s, their glamorous wedding in 1996, and their tragic deaths in a 1999 plane crash off Martha's Vineyard. JFK Jr. was 38 while Carolyn was 33. A post shared by Ryan Murphy Productions (@ryanmurphyproductions) Now in a public statement, JFK Jr.'s nephew, Jack Schlossberg, took to Instagram to set the record straight about the family's involvement, or lack thereof. 'Lately, my news feed has been filled with pictures of my uncle, John F. Kennedy Jr., a great man,' Schlossberg said in a video posted to his Instagram Stories on June 19. 'For those wondering whether his family was ever consulted, or has anything to do with, the new shows being made about him, the answer is no. And there's really not much we can do.' Schlossberg, the 32-year-old son of JFK Jr.'s sister, Caroline Kennedy, explained that legally, the family has little control over the show: 'The right to privacy, which includes the ability to control your own name, image and likeness, doesn't survive death in the state of New York. For that matter, he's considered a public figure, so there's not much we can do.' A post shared by Jack Schlossberg (@jackuno) Still, he urged the creators to approach the project with sensitivity and respect for his uncle's legacy. 'I hope those making these shows about him take seriously what he stood for in his life, all that he achieved in it. And that they donate some of the profits [that] they're making,' he added. And while he clarified that he's not against public admiration of JFK Jr., he drew the line at exploitation. 'For the record, I think admiration for my Uncle John is great. What I don't think is great is profiting off of it in a grotesque way,' he concluded. American Love Story is the latest installment in Murphy's anthology universe, which includes American Horror Story, American Crime Story, and American Sports Story. The new series will also feature Naomi Watts as Jackie Kennedy, Grace Gummer as Caroline Kennedy, Sydney Lemmon as Lauren Bessette, and Alessandro Nivola as Calvin Klein. A release date has not yet been announced.

American Love Story: Carolyn Bessette Kennedy's hair colourist says Ryan Murphy got Sarah Pidgeon's hair 'totally wrong'
There are a lot of little elements, let alone the final cumulative impact of the roulette of pictures, via which tragedy maestro Ryan Murphy introduced Sarah Pidgeon, the actor who will be portraying Carolyn Bessette Kennedy, wife to John F Kennedy Jr, and the ultimate understated it-girl of the 90, in the producer's new anthology series, American Love Story. Now while such mammoth casting moments may take a beat to settle into the audience's conscience — if you aren't already aware, JFK Jr and Carolyn were one of America's most beloved couples, their tragic deaths further cementing the sentiment — Ryan's vision of JFK Jr and Carolyn, is managing to achieve quite the opposite. And everyone is either cringing or scrunching up their eyebrows, just not giving. As though the latex leather, and the assertively sheen-ful gold satin skirt (Carolyn groupies know being loud was NOT her aesthetic) wasn't enough, the fact that Sarah was running around in a pair of Converse, is a pretty crisis-ridden point for the fashion community. The final straw? The hair, oh the hair. Carolyn's sharp, minimal dressing always stood accentuated by her soft cascading, and more importantly, warm-toned blonde locks, though her pale skin and occasional all-neutral fits may have made her hair seem lighter than it was. Sarah on the other hand, has a head full of near-platinum blonde locks. And people aren't having it. In a chat with Vogue, Carolyn's former hair colourist, Brad Johns, who was quite the hot stuff in the 90s — the best in his field — didn't mince any words at all. Firstly, Brad wasn't even aware the Carolyn was being brought back to life for the screens. So when he saw the pair launch, Brad's unfiltered reaction went, "No one would believe that Carolyn in the '90s would ever have that color from me. It's too 2024". Now if you think achieving that level of icon-hood came with a simple global dye job, you're sorely mistaken. Brad signed, "We worked really hard to get right". He built up her natural light brown locks to a "toffee" shade reminiscent of a "child-of-the-beach" vibe. The toffee shade was worked in with his signature chunking technique, "I went in and put the highlight chunks in three foils around the front of her face, and then two underneath for when she wore her hair up". And what did Brad have to say about Sarah's hair for American Love Story? "Totally wrong, the opposite of what we were going for", he shared promptly, adding, "If you show that on TV and fashion people see it, they are going to think, why is she all ashed out with her hair only one color?". Carolyn Besette Kennedy's Colorist on Those Ryan Murphy Images
When Ryan Murphy Productions dropped the first teaser images for the upcoming American Love Story, the world… well, had opinions. The new spin-off anthology series tells the story of John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette Kennedy's romance, and for many, the images left a lot to be desired. Specifically, actor Sarah Pidgeon's transformation into Carolyn, which included almost Gwen Stefani-level blonde hair. And while the Internet immediately critiqued Pidgeon's hair transformation, I wanted to go straight to the source to see how right or wrong it really was: hair colorist Brad Johns, who was known for creating Carolyn's still-talked-about blonde in the 1990s. Johns was the colorist of the era. His clients included everyone from Kate Moss and artist Cindy Sherman, to New York City socialites and fashion insiders, including, of course, Bessette. In a 1996 Vogue September issue feature, then beauty editor Amy Astley called Johns 'Golden Boy, the Founding Father of Chunking… the Color Czar.' The next year, Johns opened his eponymous salon on Fifth Avenue with eight perpetually-filled chairs. In a three-page spread from Allure's September 1998 issue, writer Martha Barnette described his signature 'chunking' technique, which became popular after he did it on Christy Turlington. It's 'basically grabbing handfuls of hair and highlighting them,' Barnette wrote. Before I reached out, Johns wasn't even aware that American Love Story was happening and hadn't seen the images. After they popped up in his inbox (courtesy of a few screenshots I sent), his ruling was blunt: 'No one would believe that Carolyn in the '90s would ever have that color from me. It's too 2024.' After that, we decided to get on the phone and chat more about Bessette's hair color, their relationship, and more. First, I ask Johns to describe Bessette's exact color to me, something he says 'we worked really hard to get right.' Bessette's hair was a natural light brown, but he took her to what he describes as a 'toffee' shade. From there, it was all about his signature chunking technique. American Love Story unveils first look of Paul Kelly, Sarah Pidgeon as America's most glamorous couple
