Dessers deal must mark a line in the sand for Rangers, writes GARY KEOWN... and an end to the Ibrox club being soft touches in the transfer market
Just under a year on, the figures still bring on a weary shake of the head. Five first-team squad members under contract shipped out the door. A grand total of £810,000 brought in for the lot in transfer fees. As an indication of just where Rangers ' reckless, scattergun approach to recruitment had been leading them, it didn't quite carry the same weight as letting Alfredo Morelos and Ryan Kent leave for nothing when there was once £30million of offers on the table. However, it was every bit as damning. Arguably, even more sobering.

Kent signed with American side Seattle Sounders at the end of March and the Rave Green are taking part in the 32-team tournament. The winger told his club in an interview: 'These are the stages that you want to play on as a footballer and showcase yourself and your team's ability against the best teams in the world. "It's a tournament with all the best teams around the world, so it's quite exciting.' Rangers splashed the cash on the wide man, forking out around £7million for the Englishman in 2019 after a loan spell at the Ibrox side. Kent scored 33 and assisted 56 in 218 games for the Light Blues, and now he wants to show the world that he's still got it. He said: 'You still want to show people across Europe and worldwide what your abilities are as a footballer and what you can still do with the ball. 'It was a perfect opportunity to put myself in and be back on the world stage and showing people what I can do.' Kent picked up a league title and Scottish cup during his spell at Rangers, and came close to a Europa League too, missing out on penalties in the 2022 final vs Eintracht Frankfurt. He wants to use these experiences to shock the world with his Seattle Sounders side, saying: 'If you ever want to win trophies, you have to approach every game like it's a final. You have to set a good tempo to the start of the tournament and get off to a good start and showing other teams that you're not just here to take part.' SunSport reporters clash over Russell Martin as he's revealed as new Rangers boss Kent's side have no easy task in the tournament, with three games in a week. The Sounders will take on Botafogo of Brazil, then Diego Simeone's Atletico Madrid, whilst rounding out the group stage with a test against newly-crowned European champions, PSG. The ex-Rangers man has played nine times for his new club, after a five-month spell as a free agent having left Fenerbache in October last year. He has yet to score in the States, but has picked up three assists. 4 Keep up to date with ALL the latest news and transfers at the Scottish Sun football page

Ryan Kent's Rangers warning rings out as giddy Seattle Sounders fans go all in
Kent is starting to find his groove in the MLS with two assists against St Louis City as sharpness builds Ryan Kent felt like he had "two right feet" when he first joined Seattle Sounders. The former Rangers player has been out of action for a considerable time after his Fenerbahce switch turned sour. But now he's flying with the MLS franchise. After brief cameos off the bench in his first few games, Kent showed Sounders fans what he can really do with two assists in their win against St Louis. Head coach Brian Schmetzer has been building Kent up and has been trying to work how best to get him on the grass for as long as possible. 'He's a super talented player,' Schmetzer said. 'How do we get him on the field? How do we reward Paul for all his hard work? It's a competition.' The ex- Liverpool youngster may not be fit enough to bang out a full 90 minutes, but he's now very much in contention for a regular starting slot. And Kent admits he's come a long way since he first arrived at Lumen Field. 'My first couple of weeks, I felt like I had two right feet,' he said. 'But as the weeks have progressed, I'm starting to feel sharp again. I'm starting to feel good with the ball. 'I need to show them I can come on in games like this and make an impact, show them I'm ready to go from the start.' And as far as Sounders fans are concerned, Kent is doing just that. One posted: "Ryan Kent is the real deal, his European experience is showing big time, he will be important at the FIFA CWC for the team to have any chance for even a single point." Another added: "That's what you get with a player of some quality in this league," while one fellow fan took it to the extreme, declaring: "Thank you Ryan Kent for changing my life." However, Rangers fans were on hand to offer a note of caution, with one warning: "Great when he's running at defenders. Now watch the next 3 matches when he doesn't do it once. Same story with him all the time." Fans beg Rangers hero ‘please stay forever' as star becomes fan favourite at new club after making just one start
Scroll down to watch the winger's latest moment of magic SOUND HIM OUT Fans beg Rangers hero 'please stay forever' as star becomes fan favourite at new club after making just one start Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) HE went from being a hero at Rangers to an outcast at his next club. But it looks like Ryan Kent will retain his legend status across the pond as he's already becoming a fan favourite in Seattle - just weeks after heading to the MLS. Sign up for the Rangers newsletter Sign up 3 Ryan Kent produced a moment of magic in his latest outing Credit: MLS 3 He received the ball from wide and took several opponents on Credit: MLS 3 He sealed his side's victory with an assist Credit: MLS Kent, 28, is looking to get his career back on track over in the States after spending five months in football exile following his exit from Fenerbahce in October. The former Rangers winger's contract was terminated by mutual consent after he fell out of favour under legendary manager Jose Mourinho. His sharp exit meant he wasn't involved in the Europa League last 16 tie between Fenerbahce and Rangers in March. But later that same month Kent returned to the football fold when he sealed his shock move to Seattle Sounders. And three weeks after that he made his stunning return to the pitch off the bench against Nasville. He only got six minutes that day and 19 minutes the following game as manager Brian Schmetzer decided to ease him in following his lengthy lay-off. It was then the following match against St. Louis where he officially introduced himself to his new fans. Despite not starting a game at that point, Kent was hailed by fans as their 'lord and saviour" as he came off the bench in the second half and provided two assists in the 4-1 victory. That heroic display left his gaffer with no other option than to give him the nod to make his first start against Houston. And the wide-man didn't disappoint. Rangers fans defiant banner after tifo criticism Kent sealed the deal for Seattle with an incredible assist in the second half which left Albert Rusnak with almost an open goal as opposition goalkeeper Jonathan Bond was left scrambling. The wide-man received the ball out wide and produced one of his trademark runs to rip apart the Houston backline. He cut inside and took several players on before drilling the ball across the face of goal in the box where Rusnak was waiting to pounce. It's a passage of play that Rangers fans watched a countless number of times before during Kent's stint at Ibrox. But Sounders fans are now only just seeing what he's capable of and many took to social media to react to his display, with some begging him to "stay forever". One fan wrote: "Ryan Kent is just a different breed. Please stay forever." A second said: "This is exactly what the Sounders have been needing. Ryan Kent has been such a great signing so far." A third buzzing fan added: "We got an absolute STEAL." Another commented: "Kent has made a huge difference in the last two matches."
