Digital platform 'Rakan' to tackle unity-related complaints

SHAH ALAM: The National Unity Ministry has introduced a new initiative, the National Public Community Complaints Network (Rakan), as a dedicated digital platform to facilitate public complaints related to unity issues. Its minister Datuk Aaron Aro Dagang said the platform will strengthen the management of information and responses to community complaints while enhancing the efficiency of monitoring systems for safety and harmony at the grassroots level. "Rakan is an initiative to bring the public closer to the government in empowering communities to maintain national harmony. "We are confident this initiative can foster a sense of social responsibility among the public in addressing sensitive issues that could threaten unity," he told reporters after launching the platform here today. Developed by the National Unity and Integration Department, Rakan is accessible starting today via the website Aaron assured that all complaint information will be kept confidential, where district unity officers will review the reports and share them with the right agencies at local, state, or national levels. Authorities like the police and Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) will also be involved when needed. Earlier in his speech, Aaron said the ministry aims to raise the National Unity Index (IPNas) score to at least 0.70 this year, up from 0.629 in 2022. He said IPNas is the country's only official tool for measuring national unity and harmony, which recorded its first score in 2018 at 0.567. "To achieve the target IPNas score of 0.70 this year, the ministry has implemented various efforts, including community dialogues, multi-ethnic integration programmes and continuous empowerment of grassroots roles. "Importantly, improving the IPNas score is not just about statistics but about strengthening the nation's social foundation, from perception to action," he said. Aaron said the ministry is actively exploring new digital avenues to strengthen unity, including online applications for Rukun Tetangga (neighbourhood watch) formations, enhancing systematic reporting and monitoring mechanisms and developing a centralised community data analytics system for targeted interventions. He said these efforts are being driven through the creation of a community analytics database under the department, which is expected to form the backbone of the ministry's digital strategy in advancing a more holistic and inclusive national unity agenda.

Bangladeshi father granted long-term pass, can stay to care for disabled daughter

SEREMBAN: A Bangladeshi man who had been raising his special needs daughter while awaiting possible deportation from Malaysia can now breathe a sigh of relief. This comes after the approval of Mohammad Ala Uddin's application for a long-term social visit pass, allowing the 35-year-old to remain in the country and focus on caring for his daughter, Siti Aminah, 7, who is a Malaysian citizen. "Alhamdulillah, I feel at ease now because I can continue to care for my daughter here. Without help, I wouldn't have been able to solve this problem because I didn't know what to do," he said. He was met during a visit to his home in Taman Sri Mawar 1 yesterday by members of a non-governmental organisation, Persatuan Cakna Rasa Sayang (PCRS), the local Rukun Tetangga and mosque committee. Ala Uddin also expressed gratitude for having met kind-hearted individuals in Malaysia, especially PCRS, who had taken him to Putrajaya to settle his case. It was earlier reported that he was worried for his daughter's future after his wife Nur Shaillah Revathy Abdullah, who was a Malaysian citizen, died in May. This was because his social visit pass was due to expire at the end of May. Meanwhile, PCRS patron Zulkifli Muhamed thanked the Immigration Department for facilitating the resolution of the man's case after it was reported in the media. "I admit we faced criticism while handling the issue because the father is a foreigner. "But our focus was on the welfare and future of his daughter, who is a Malaysian citizen and a child with disabilities suffering from multiple chronic illnesses. "We are also grateful to the Rukun Tetangga and mosque committee for their assistance and concern for this single father's plight," he said.

National-level Rukun Tetangga Golden Jubilee To Be Held In August

SEGAMAT, May 15 (Bernama) -- The national-level Golden Jubilee celebration of the 50th anniversary of Rukun Tetangga (KRT) will be held at the Kampung Kasipillay Rukun Tetangga Area (KRT) in Kuala Lumpur on Aug 28. National Unity Minister Datuk Aaron Ago Dagang said the celebration will continue the following day at Galaxy Hall in Sentul, also in the federal capital. 'In line with the changing times and five decades of KRT's presence in the country, I am pleased to announce that 'Empowering Communities, Strengthening Unity' will be the new slogan for KRT,' he said when officiating the Johor State-level Unity Week celebration and pre-launch of the Rukun Tetangga Golden Jubilee 2025 at Dataran Segamat here today. Also present were National Unity Ministry deputy secretary-general, Mohamad Sobri Mat Daud, and Department of National Unity and Integration director-general, Datuk Roslan Che Daud. Aaron said the establishment of the first KRT in Kampung Kasipillay on Aug 29, 1975 marked the beginning of the KRT initiative nationwide, which has proven to be one of the most effective policies in building a united national identity. 'It not only reflects the government's concern for the well-being of the people but also positions the rakyat as agents of change in shaping the country's future,' he said. Aaron also said that in 2024, a total of 152 Rukun Tetangga units were modelled as drivers of progressive communities, an initiative to elevate the role of KRT within communities across the country. During the event, Aaron also launched the new KRT logo. Speaking to reporters after the celebration, Aaron said there are currently 8,529 KRTs nationwide, with 20 per cent of KRT chairmen being youths, proving the strong commitment of the younger generation in strengthening local community unity.
