"If landing gear did not retract, suggests major technical defect in AI-171 crash": Former Air India pilot Manmath Routray
Bhubaneshwar (Odisha) [India], June 13 (ANI): Former Air India commercial pilot and Biju Janata Dal (BJD) leader Manmath Routray on Friday raised concerns regarding the technical condition of the Air India-171 aircraft that crashed on June 12 in Gujarat's Ahmedabad, claiming 241 lives, including cabin crew. Routray stated that preliminary visuals suggest that there may be a 'major technical defect' if the landing gears failed to retract according to the initial visuals that had emerged. Speaking on the incident, he said, 'The visuals after the incident show that the landing gear has not gone up as it should be. If the landing gear has not gone up, then there is a 100% chance of major technical default... If the landing gear failed, which means there is a major technical defect... If both engines have failed, then there is a possibility of a fault in Boeing's design.' The former pilot of Air India further pointed out that the aircraft had reportedly undergone recent maintenance, and many components had been overhauled, and perhaps a mistake could have occurred during maintenance. He said, 'To date, no one has even questioned Air India's training standards... The scene reveals that much data emerged from various sources yesterday, which was not even half the truth. The facts that are slowly surfacing indicate that the aircraft was under maintenance, a substantial amount of work has been completed, and many components have been overhauled. Perhaps a mistake occurred during maintenance, as Boeing's record for this aircraft has been flawless to date...' 'Initially, when this aircraft came 14 years ago, there was an issue with its battery. It's a very efficient and stable aircraft. It seems there was a problem with the thrust (engine power)... The aircraft was max loaded. In summer, temperatures are high, and higher temperatures result in lower density, it lowers the performance of the aircraft. It lowers the efficiency of the aircraft...' Routray stated. A total of 241 people onboard the Boeing 787-8, Air India flight 171, including 12 crew members, have died in the deadly Ahmedabad plane crash, Air India confirmed post-midnight on Friday. The passenger plane crashed near Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in Gujarat's Ahmedabad into a resident doctors' hostel building shortly after take-off. (ANI)

Bihar native dupes man on pretext of helping open petrol pump, arrested
BHUBANESWAR : Police have arrested a Bihar native for allegedly posing as an Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) employee and cheating a businessman of Rs 19.97 lakh on the promise of facilitating him to open a petrol pump in Biridi area of Jagatsinghpur. The accused, Satish Kumar of Nawada district in Bihar, was brought to Odisha on Saturday night. The Cyber Crime and Economic Offence police station had received a complaint from Sarada Prasan Routray, a businessman of Bhotapada in this connection on May 2. As per the complainant, he had been looking to open a petrol pump and browsing the internet to get information on the same. While searching online, he had come across a fake website where the scamsters impersonated themselves as employees of IOCL, and assured to help him open a petrol pump in his wife's name at Biridi. The cyber fraudsters even used a fake website - iocl@ to communicate with the complainant. Without realising that it was a scam, Routray allegedly deposited six cheques amounting to Rs 19.97 lakh between January 29 and April 25. However, he later developed a suspicion over the entire process and visited the IOCL office where Routray realised that he had been duped by the fraudsters. 'All the cheques were issued in the name of IOCL. However, the accused had provided mule account numbers to Routray,' said Bhubaneswar DCP, Jagmohan Meena. Police said neither the bank nor the complainant verified if the accounts indeed belonged to IOCL. 'The banks and the customers should verify the names on the cheques and the accounts where the money is being transferred to find out if they are same or not,' said Cyber crime and Economic Offence police station ACP, Akshaya Kumar Nayak.

Bhadrak to apply for GI tag for ‘Palua Ladu'
Bhadrak: The district administration of Bhadrak has initiated measures to secure a Geographical Indication (GI) tag for 'Palua Ladu', a traditional sweetmeat known for its distinct flavour and artisanal preparation. The move comes following a directive from District Collector Dilip Routray, who had instructed all departmental heads, tehsildars and block development officers to include 'Palua Ladu' in hospitality packets served during official meetings and events. 'Securing the GI tag will safeguard the cultural and historical legacy of 'Palua Ladu' while providing Bhadrak a unique identity,' Routray said. It will also boost the regional economy, encourage local sweet makers and showcase Odisha's rich heritage on the global platform, he said. 'Palua Ladu' is cherished across Odisha and beyond for its rich taste and traditional preparation using simple, time-honoured ingredients like 'palua' (arrowroot powder), semolina and sugar. The initiative to obtain a GI tag is seen as a strategic effort to protect its authenticity, prevent imitation and promote the skills of Bhadrak's confectioners, an official said. The district administration is working closely with local sweet makers and cultural organisations to compile historical and technical documentation needed for the GI tag application, he said. 'If the tag is granted, 'Palua Ladu' will join Odisha's other GI-tagged specialties like 'Rasagola' and 'Kandhamal Haldi',' the official said.
