Former Premier League star facing 13 YEARS in prison as he stands accused of importing two tons of cocaine worth £48m
A former Premier League star has been accused of smuggling two tons of cocaine, with a street value of an incredible £48million. The ex-player featured in front of a court on Tuesday alongside their brother in Breda, the Netherlands where they stood accused of bringing in the drug illegally from South America in 2020 and 2021. Should he be found guilty, the former defender could be hit with up to 13 years behind bars, as well as a fine of £1.5m. Former Wigan and Twente star Ronnie Stam was arrested in June along with his parents, brother and girlfriend and he has remained in custody ever since. During the court hearing, prosecutors claimed that evidence of encrypted phone logs had been found between Ronnie and brother Rudi, evidencing drug shipments, with pictures also said to have been shared of cocaine. The Sun reports that he informed the court his healthy bank balance was a direct result of his professional football career. Despite this the prosecutors are thought to have called for a 13-year sentence for the former defender, which would see him remain imprisoned until 2038 due to his role in the crimes. Stam is reported to have told the court he was an accomplice in the import of 20kg of cocaine to Germany from Brazil back in 2020, but is thought to have denied any further involvement or wrongdoing. Stam played for Wigan between 2010 and 2013, and represented Twente and Standard Liege during his career as well as having two spells at NAC Breda. He won the FA Cup with Wigan in 2013 but didn't feature in the final. In September last year a court in Breda heard that Stam was involved in trafficking 2,217 kilos of cocaine. A prosecutor told the hearing: 'This case concerns hundreds of kilos of cocaine each time. I contend that Stam was a major player in the drugs world.' Stam wasn't in court to hear the accusations against him last year. In June police raided six homes and a camper van as part of the investigation. They found £85,000 in cash. Police seized the money, three properties, a yacht, three cars, six luxury watches and jewellery. Stam is the only family member who remains in custody, with his lawyer asking for him to be provisionally released. The judge refused, with there being concerns that Stam could flee to Dubai to join his brother.

FORMER Premier League star Ronnie Stam is facing THIRTEEN YEARS in jail - after being accused of smuggling two tonnes of cocaine. And the ex- Wigan defender could also be fined up to £1.5million if found guilty of trafficking the drugs, with a street value of £48m. 3 3 3 Stam, 40, had three top-flight seasons with the Latics - making 73 appearances. He played in their FA Cup -winning campaign of 2013, but missed the final against Manchester City before leaving for Standard Liege that year. But the now-retired player appeared in a Dutch court on Tuesday alongside his brother Rudi, 43. The trial at Breda heard that the brothers transported cocaine from South America to the Netherlands in 2020 and 2021. Prosecutors said evidence of drug shipments was found in encrypted phone chats between Ronnie and Rudi. Photos of blocks of cocaine were reportedly seen among the duo's messages. The public prosecutor called for Stam to be imprisoned until 2038, and fined Є1.7m, for his part in the alleged crimes. Meanwhile, brother Rudi is facing over six years in jail, plus an identical fine, if found guilty. Stam told the court that he has been involved in a 20 kilo shipment to Germany in 2020, but denied any further involvement in the drug trade. The Breda-born former defender claimed the money in his bank accounts had come from his football career. Stam won the Dutch title with FC Twente in 2010, under ex- England boss Steve McClaren, before landing a £2m move to Wigan that year. He has been in custody since first being arrested last June. The trial continues.
