Steelers' New-Look Receiver Group Disrespected in Latest Ranking

Steelers' New-Look Receiver Group Disrespected in Latest Ranking originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Pittsburgh Steelers traded away star wide receiver George Pickens to the Dallas Cowboys, but they also made a trade with the Seattle Seahawks to acquire their star wideout, D.K. Metcalf. Advertisement And some are not necessarily a fan of the move. In a recent article by PFF's Trevor Sikkema, he ranks every NFL team's wide receiver corps going into the 2025 season. But near the bottom of the list at No. 29, he has the Steelers' new group. "The Steelers traded for D.K. Metcalf in the offseason but then shipped off George Pickens. That profiles as only a slight upgrade for a team that finished 20th in PFF receiving grade in 2024," Sikkema wrote. "Pittsburgh should get more out of second-year receiver Roman Wilson, who was largely injured last season, and the backfield combination of Jaylen Warren and Kenneth Gainwell brings some third-down, pass-catching ability." A big factor in the team being able to prove this ranking wrong is Roman Wilson, who did not play in his rookie season due to injury. If he can step up in a big way, the team's wide receiver corps could improve tremendously. Advertisement As for Metcalf, he had also 100 more receiving yards than Pickens last season, as well as two more touchdowns. Pairing new quarterback Aaron Rodgers with a receiver with athleticism like Metcalf's just feels like a match made in heaven. The Steelers will go into the 2025 season looking to make the playoffs for the third straight season, as well as prove this ranking wrong. Steelers WR Will Welcome Gabe Davis ‘With Open Arms' if He Lands in Pittsburgh

Pittsburgh Steelers second-year wide receiver Roman Wilson would be happy to add free agent Gabe Davis into the mix. PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Steelers are hosting wide receiver Gabe Davis on a free agent visit on Thursday. It's a much-needed addition after trading George Pickens but one that could hurt the outlook of up-and-coming players like second-year wide receiver Roman Wilson. Advertisement Wilson, who played just five snaps of in-game action after missing most of his rookie season due to injuries, does not care, though. 'I'll welcome him with open arms,' Wilson said of the Steelers possibly signing Davis. 'My biggest motivation is myself.' Wilson, Pittsburgh's third-round pick (No. 84) in the 2024 NFL Draft, has looked like a completely different player throughout the early portions of the offseason. 'I missed a lot of time, so putting in a lot of work,' Wilson said. 'I feel like I've got a lot better. The coaches did a great job helping me develop and you can see it. I feel good.' Advertisement However, Wilson will still have to prove he is deserving of a role in the Steelers offense this season. That will be more difficult if the team adds yet another veteran in Davis. Pittsburgh already traded for wide receiver DK Metcalf and signed veteran Robert Woods in free agency, but Wilson is doing his best to learn from the best. 'Robert Woods has been a great addition to this receiver room,' Wilson said. 'He's a great guy. Brings a lot of different point of views and things that I haven't really been around. So it's cool to see that.' It's safe to assume if Davis joins the group, Wilson will do the same with him as he looks to rebound from his disappointing rookie year. Robert Woods Believes ‘Sky's the Limit' for Steelers Second-Year WR

Veteran Robert Woods thinks Pittsburgh Steelers second-year wide receiver Roman Wilson has a promising future. PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Steelers are hoping to see big things from wide receiver Roman Wilson, who missed most of his rookie season due to injuries. Veteran Robert Woods is confident they'll get just that from their second-year wide receiver. Advertisement 'Coming to work ready to work,' Woods said of Wilson. 'Coming out here, you see he's fast and skillful, but when you see his approach, taking the details to improve his game. He had a great week this week. He had some big, explosive plays. Just give him confidence. He's a confident player, being able to make his plays, be himself and get the ball in his hands. I think when you give confidence to our whole room, sky's the limit.' The Steelers selected Wilson with their third-round pick (No. 84) in the 2024 NFL Draft after he recorded a career-high 48 receptions for 789 yards and 12 touchdowns in his final year at Michigan. Michigan football defeats Eastern Carolina University, 30-3, at Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor, MI on September 2, 2023. However, Wilson's rookie season ended before it even started as he suffered a high ankle sprain in the first week of training camp. Advertisement The 23-year-old was eventually able to work his way back and even received some in-game action, but he then suffered another setback, which he was never able to fully recover from. Wilson is finally healthy, though, and Woods is willing to do whatever it takes to help him reach his full potential. 'You wanna lead by example and show them the ropes and stuff like that,' Woods said. 'I feel like my game and how I approach it is I'm trying to feed my knowledge to everybody on the whole team, even the DBs. If everybody getting better, this whole team is getting better.' Only time will tell if Wilson can reach the expectations of those around him, but he seems to be more confident than ever now that he's back on the field and making plays. Steelers WR Roman Wilson Set to Make Huge Year 2 Leap

Steelers wide receiver Roman Wilson, who missed most of his rookie season due to injuries, turned heads during Pittsburgh's OTAs. It could be a breakout year for the Michigan product. Pro Football Focus believes Wilson is bound to make a big leap in Year 2. Advertisement 'In his final season at Michigan in 2023, Wilson accounted for 48 receptions, 789 yards and 12 touchdowns. He displayed strong hands (just one drop) and big-play ability, catching 12 passes 20-plus yards downfield. Moving forward, Wilson has an opportunity to step up into a bigger role. With George Pickens being traded to Dallas, Pittsburgh has very little depth at wide receiver behind recently acquired D.K. Metcalf, and the team will need his production to contend in a tough AFC North division,' Ryan Smith of PFF wrote. Steelers veteran wide receiver Robert Woods is confident that Woods will bounce back after facing adversity in his rookie campaign. 'Coming to work ready to work,' Woods said of Wilson last week at OTAs. 'Coming out here, you see he's fast and skillful, but when you see his approach, taking the details to improve his game. He had a great week this week. He had some big, explosive plays. Just give him confidence. He's a confident player, being able to make his plays, be himself and get the ball in his hands. Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Roman Wilson could step up in his second season.

Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Roman Wilson could step up in his second season. originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Pittsburgh Steelers traded away star wide receiver George Pickens to the Dallas Cowboys earlier this offseason, so they would love someone to step up and replace him in the 2025 season. Advertisement In a recent article by PFF's Ryan Smith, he picks 10 second-year players who could make a bigger impact in 2025 than they did in their rookie seasons. While his case is a bit different, one of the players he picks is Steelers receiver Roman Wilson. "Wilson had a rookie season to forget in 2024, as he suffered an ankle injury in the Steelers' first padded practice... His NFL debut in Week 6 lasted just five snaps before a hamstring injury ended his campaign for good," Smith wrote. "Moving forward, Wilson has an opportunity to step up into a bigger role... Pittsburgh has very little depth at wide receiver behind recently acquired D.K. Metcalf, and the team will need his production to contend in a tough AFC North division." Wilson was not able to show what he is capable of in his rookie season due to injuries, but there is a reason the Steelers selected him in the third round of the 2024 NFL Draft. In his final season with the Michigan Wolverines, the 23-year-old wideout tallied up 789 receiving yards and 12 touchdowns, and was a key part in his team winning the National Championship. Advertisement Multiple sources have said that Wilson is impressing in Steelers OTAs, so he will be looking to show that promise when the 2025 regular season starts.
