Roger Gorayeb joins Strong Group Athletics as volleyball consultant
Decorated volleyball coach Roger Gorayeb has been tapped by Strong Group Athletics as a consultant for its girls' and women's volleyball programs. The group announced the development on Thursday, days after Capital1 appointed Gorayeb as consultant of the Solar Spikers as Jorge de Brito took over the head coaching job. According to SGA, Gorayeb will provide mentorship to student-athletes of teams backed by the organization such as the De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde and Colegio de San Juan de Letran in the NCAA, and the University of the Philippines and University of Santo Tomas in the UAAP. 'Masaya ako kasi mayroon pa palang nagtitiwala sa akin,' Gorayeb said in a statement. 'Sobrang sarap sa feeling kasi hindi ako mawawala sa volleyball. Passion ko talaga magturo ng mga bata. Super saya.' SGA added Gorayeb is with the organization 'for as long as he can mentor our athletes." 'His wealth of experience and championship pedigree will be an incredible asset to all our teams, both on and off the court," Strong Group Volleyball head Kiara Cruz said. In NCAA Season 100, Gorayeb's San Sebastian women's squad finished 7th with a record of eight wins and ten losses. —JKC, GMA Integrated News

Gorayeb says Capital1 will 'think wisely' as Solar Spikers choose top pick in PVL Draft
Capital1 head coach Roger Gorayeb said the Solar Spikers will "think wisely" as they will select the top pick in the upcoming PVL Draft. The Solar Spikers got the opportunity to choose the top pick after the league's draft lottery held last Tuesday. A total of 60 athletes submitted their names for the draft on June 8, including the likes of UAAP MVP Bella Belen and former NCAA MVP Mycah Go. "Hintayin ko yung official list kasi baka yung iba mag-back out," Gorayeb told GMA News Online. "We have to think wisely, recruit wisely kasi nakaka-one year pa lang kami eh sa dami ng prospect ngayon, parang 60 'yung initial list. Sana makakuha ako ng maganda-gandang recruit," the Capital1 coach said, adding that he wants to get either an outside hitter or a middle blocker in the upcoming draft. For Gorayeb, a player's attitude in training also matters to him. "I always say na this is not a popularity game," he said. "Minsan, maski sa recruitment, siyempre merong player na pinag-aagawan, merong player na 'di pinag-aagawan pero 'yun ang magsisipag kasi 'yun ang chance nila kaya kailangan namin mag-isip nang malalim at mabuti." "Huwag naming sasayangin 'yung [number] one," he added. Team owner Milka Romero previously said picking the top rookie is a turning point for their franchise. "This first-round pick is the hope of a thousand dreams—the heart and soul Capital1 has been waiting for,' Romero said. 'With this franchise player, we're not just building a team… we're building a future our fans can believe in." Before the draft, the league will hold a Draft Combine on Friday and Saturday at the Paco Arena in Manila. —JKC, GMA Integrated News
