Tesla invites select few to Texas robotaxi trial with front seat safety monitors

[SAN FRANCISCO] Tesla has sent out invitations to a small group of people to join the limited test of its robotaxi service in Austin, Texas, which is tentatively set to start on Sunday (Jun 22), according to posts and e-mail screenshots on social media. The invitations said a Tesla employee will accompany riders in the front passenger seat, the posts showed. A successful trial in Austin will be crucial for Tesla, as car buyers shun the company following its CEO Elon Musk's, embrace of hard-right politics in the US and worldwide. The company has shifted from building a cheaper electric vehicle (EV) platform to robotics and artificial intelligence (AI). Much of the company's valuation rests on that bet. Musk has said he will focus on safety in the trial, with humans remotely monitoring the vehicles. He has said he expects to be able to scale the robotaxi quickly. Tesla plans to deploy around 10 Model Y SUVs that run on a version of Tesla's full self-driving driver assistance software, Musk has said. 'Tesla is rolling out the Robotaxi service extremely cautiously, which is good. Baby steps,' posted Omar Qazi, an user with 635,100 followers who posts often about Tesla using the handle @WholeMarsBlog and received an invite. 'Very much so,' CEO Elon Musk responded. But commercialising autonomous vehicles is an expensive, risky process. Tesla and others such as Alphabet's Waymo and Amazon's Zoox have faced federal investigations and recalls following collisions. Industry experts have questioned the efficacy of Tesla's self-driving technology that depends mostly on cameras and AI, without redundant sensors such as lidar and radar, claiming fog, heavy rain, and glaring sunlight can hamper safety. On Wednesday, a group of Democratic lawmakers from the Austin area called on the company to delay the rollout until September, when a new state law governing autonomous vehicles takes effect. Users who confirm their presence in Austin can download Tesla's Robotaxi app, which they use to call a vehicle. 'Through this exclusive preview, you will have the opportunity to provide valuable feedback on our Robotaxi service,' one of the screenshots showed. Tesla confirms its first robotaxi rides will have this passenger safety feature

Tesla's first robotaxi rides will include a human safety monitor in the front passenger seat. The Elon Musk-led electric vehicle maker has confirmed this feature in the invitations sent to influencers and investors. This passenger safety feature contradicts Elon Musk's previous assurances of fully unsupervised service. The invitations, which announced a June 22 launch date for the highly anticipated service, specify that the human monitor will "accompany you on your trip." This move marks a departure from Musk's earlier promises in January to launch "unsupervised" robotaxis with "no one in the car" this summer. In an April earnings call, Musk further explained that 10 to 20 Tesla Model Y vehicles would be remotely operated in emergencies. However, details regarding Tesla's robotaxi service have been scarce leading up to its launch. What Tesla said in its robotaxi service invitations In the invitation, the company wrote: 'As an Early Access rider, you can be among the first to use our new Robotaxi App and experience an autonomous ride within our geofenced area in Austin. This Options Tool Can Show You How to Trade Tesla Stock Ahead of Robotaxi Day

Tesla's (TSLA) long-awaited Robotaxi launch is finally happening on June 22 in Austin, Texas. CEO Elon Musk is expected to unveil the Cybercab — Tesla's first fully autonomous vehicle with no steering wheel or brake pedals. It's a bold move that could ignite Tesla's next wave of growth… or leave an opening for fast-rising competitors to take the lead. While this headline moment dominates the news cycle, investors shouldn't ignore the rest of the autonomous vehicle (AV) playing field. Companies like Amazon's (AMZN) Zoox, Alphabet's (GOOG) (GOOGL) Waymo, Uber (UBER), Nvidia (NVDA), WeRide (WRD), Innoviz (INVZ), and Aeva (AEVA) are also moving rapidly into the self-driving car arena — and some of their stocks are already heating up. Keep up by reading our FREE midday Barchart Brief newsletter for exclusive charts, analysis, and headlines. Tesla's Cybercab isn't just a new vehicle; it's a fully autonomous, driverless platform aimed at revolutionizing mobility. The June 22 event marks a critical milestone for Tesla's artificial intelligence (AI) roadmap, and investors are watching closely for product details and updates on federal approvals. Even better? Tesla just received a regulatory boost from the Trump administration, which plans to fast-track approvals for autonomous vehicles without traditional controls — a perfect fit for Tesla's Cybercab design. Amazon is building a 220,000 square foot robotaxi factory in California to produce up to 10,000 autonomous vehicles a year through its Zoox acquisition. Uber, in partnership with Volkswagen (VWAGY), is bringing driverless vans to U.S. streets — starting in Los Angeles with commercial launch by 2026. Waymo, a subsidiary of Alphabet, is already one of the most established names in autonomous driving. And Nvidia-backed WeRide just scored a major partnership with Tencent (TCEHY) and is expanding across Asia and Europe. Stocks like Innoviz (INVZ) and AEVA Technologies (AEVA) are getting attention for their advanced LiDAR systems and recent deal activity. AEVA, in particular, has surged over 400% in 2025, and both stocks currently hold a 'Buy' signal on Barchart's Opinion indicators. Barchart's Gamma Exposure Tool shows a key setup for traders: Large positive gamma spike at $330 Negative gamma clusters starting at $315 Gamma Flip turns negative at $308 This setup suggests we could see more volatility in TSLA stock as we approach the June 22 event — especially if price action challenges these levels. While TSLA is in focus right now, the bigger story isn't about just Tesla anymore. With massive capital flowing into robotaxis, quantum AI, and autonomous driving, the next wave of winners could come from anywhere in the supply chain — not just the top dogs.
