A $6 billion logistics CEO credits an ice cream flavor with helping him understand why customers need fresh innovation
CEO Robert Sanchez led the transformation of a nearly century-old trucking and logistics company by applying a lesson he learned as a teenager about ice cream. The key, according to Sanchez, lies in challenging the 'we've always done it this way' method of thinking and focusing on the way customer needs have evolved. Ryder System, with $12.6 billion in revenue, is a leading provider of logistics and transportation services with more than 50,000 employees in North America operating a fleet of more than 250,000 trucks. It's come a long way since it was founded in 1933 by James Ryder with a single Model A Ford truck and a $35 down payment. But the Ryder board, about a decade ago, wanted CEO Robert Sanchez to focus on innovation and how to lead the company beyond the core strategy and services that had sustained it for decades. The answer, for Sanchez, had its roots in a job he worked every weekend as a teenager: scooping ice cream at Carvel. In the late 1970s and early 1980s, Sanchez worked at a Carvel ice cream shop in Miami during a time the city saw an influx of Cuban immigrants. Cuban customers would stop into the store and ask if Carvel carried a flavor called mamey (mah-MAY) ice cream. The creamy Caribbean fruit has a delicate but firm texture like a papaya, but tastes like a delicious pumpkin pie. Kids grow up eating it fresh or in desserts, and it's often blended into ice cream. 'Folks would come into Carvel and ask if we had mamey, and obviously we didn't have mamey because we're Carvel, and they don't have mamey,' Sanchez told Fortune. 'So the owner of the ice cream store kept trying to lobby Carvel to make mamey ice cream, but they wouldn't.' Disappointed customers would leave Carvel and go across the street to the Cuban restaurant to get their mamey ice cream fix. Finally, the store owner had enough. 'One day, the owner of the ice cream store got upset and he said, 'You know what? I'm gonna make my own ice cream,'' Sanchez recalled. 'So he went, and he bought mamey at the store and he mixed it with the Carvel ice cream mix and he created Carvel mamey ice cream.' Within two weeks, it was the third-best selling ice cream in the shop. 'It's what people wanted—they wanted mamey,' said Sanchez. 'Carvel actually has great ice cream and you mix that with the right flavor and it sold great.' Fast forward to about 10 years ago and the Ryder board was pressing Sanchez about innovation, pointing out that the company was still selling essentially the same services Jim Ryder had launched decades earlier. With mamey on his mind, Sanchez led Ryder to innovate by combining existing capabilities in new ways to solve customers' problems. 'This guy, it's not like he split the atom, but he invented Carvel mamey ice cream by putting these two things together and giving the customers what they wanted,' Sanchez said. 'We at Ryder keep selling vanilla and chocolate, but maybe there are customers that want something different.' The company launched an e-commerce fulfillment business, which was an entirely new area for Ryder; a mobile maintenance business; and technology to track customer freight that it didn't have before. Sanchez said the company also launched what he described as 'the first Airbnb for trucks,' which ultimately didn't work out as expected, but the company pivoted. 'We now have a muscle for developing new products and services and innovating,' he said, which is similar to what his former boss at Carvel did with mamey ice cream. 'You're not inventing the next iPhone, but you're putting together services in a different way to meet customers' needs.' And if you think a CEO whose first job was at an ice cream store would put them off ice cream, that isn't the case for Sanchez. Ice cream, he admits, probably has nothing to do with being fit or healthy, but it keeps him happy. Ben & Jerry's Cherry Garcia flavor and a chocolate and vanilla soft-serve swirl—like the kind Carvel serves—are his two favorites. Chelsea player ratings: Pedro Neto star of the show but petulant Marc Cucurella has day to forget
CHELSEA opened their Club World Cup campaign with a low-key 2-0 win over LAFC. Enzo Maresca named a strong side for the game in Atlanta, not taking the Blues' MLS opponents lightly. 12 New boy Liam Delap started on the bench, with Maresca going for a more tried and tested line-up. But despite beginning as a sub, Delap did come on to have an impact. Goals by Pedro Neto and Enzo Fernandez went on to seal victory for the Blues. Here's how SunSport's Etienne Fermie rated each Chelsea star on the night. ROBERT SANCHEZ - 6 Flapped at a free-kick in the first-half. Made a really good stop with his feet to deny Denis Bouanga on 56 minutes. Produced another save late on, but did the palm the ball into a dangerous area. REECE JAMES - 5 Booked for a late challenge. Involved in a brief scuffle before half-time and did not emerge for the second half. Not the England star's finest outing. 12 TOSIN ADARABIOYO - 6 Yellow carded on the stroke of half-time but otherwise unruffled in the opening 45. The former Manchester City starlet was tested more as the game went on. 12 Chelsea stars including Cole Palmer fly to the US for Club World Cup LEVI COLWILL - 6 Reasonably solid performance at the back, although the Blues' defence did get stretched as the game went on. Colwill was guilty of misplacing passes at times. MARC CUCURELLA - 4 Beaten incredibly easily by David Martinez on 51 minutes, but was spared his blushes when the LAFC substitute shanked his subsequent shot wide. Involved in a few theatrical incidents and booked in the second half for a petulant challenge. Seemed to be constantly looking for arguments. MOISES CAICEDO - 7 A typically tenacious performance in the middle of the park from Chelsea's reigning player of the year. Caicedo was effective in regaining possession and recycling the ball. 12 ROMEO LAVIA - 6 Played a few smart passes during a low-key first half. Was replaced by Enzo Fernandez at the break. 12 COLE PALMER - 6 Uncharacteristically blazed a shot wildly over the bar after being set up by Pedro Neto. Buzzed around and played a nice pass in the build-up to Fernandez's goal, but wasn't at his imperious best. PEDRO NETO - 8 Brilliantly cut inside before whacking a left-footed shot beyond Hugo Lloris to give Chelsea the lead. Put in a brilliant cross for Jackson on 54 minutes. Gorgeous through ball to set up Palmer, only for the England star to blaze over. NONI MADUEKE - 5 Forced a decent stop by Hugo Lloris on 17 minutes. Was often involved during the first half but little he tried came off. Subbed just after the hour mark having failed to make a big impact. NICOLAS JACKSON - 7 Played Madueke through with a brilliant pass. Later produced an even better ball to set up Neto's opener. Nearly scored with a second half header before being replaced by Liam Delap. SUBSTITUTES Enzo Fernandez (for Lavia, 46) - 7 Sealed Chelsea's win with a simple close-range finish. Malo Gusto (for James, 46) - 5 A pretty underwhelming cameo from Chelsea's backup right-back. Liam Delap (for Jackson, 64) - 7 Some brilliant bustling centre-forward play to bully his marker before nearly teeing up Fernandez. Lovely cross to set up the Argentine's goal. Tyrique George (for Madueke, 64) - 5 A few nifty touches but didn't really make much of an impact. Dario Essugo (for Caicedo, 84) - N/A Not enough time to show what he can do. Christopher Nkunku (for Palmer, 84) - N/A Forgotten man barely got a touch off the bench.

Insider: Chelsea tell first and second choice in key position they can both leave
Insider: Chelsea tell first and second choice in key position they can both leave Chelsea's goalkeeper situation is something of a mess right now. The incumbent is Robert Sanchez – but he's not trusted by anyone, and has been dropped from the first time 3 times in three seasons, at two different clubs. Advertisement The alternate is Djordje Petrovic. He had a great season on loan with Strasbourg, and was assumed to be coming back to take the number one shirt. But he's been left out of the first team group travelling to the Club World Cup. Filip Jorgensen didn't impress when given first team chances this season, and Mike Penders is too young. Meanwhile an attempt to sign Mike Maignan from AC Milan failed this week. Are we really to believe the briefs that the club are happy with Sanchez as starter? Not according to Graeme Bailey. He told the Chelsea Chronicle that he thought it was all a smoke screen. Sanchez and Petrovic both told they can leave – despite the briefs Robert Sanchez and Djordje Petrovic in a montage. Advertisement 'This talk of Chelsea having full faith in their five goalkeepers, because we can throw Kepa into this as well, [isn't true]. There really is no faith from Enzo Maresca in this at all. Of those five, Enzo Maresca doesn't want any of them. Robert Sanchez has been told he can leave. 'Djordje Petrovic has been told he can leave and there's interest from Nice. There's quite a bit of interest in France in him. No shock given the season he just had.' More sources needed to confirm surprise story We can totally believe that is true – we just wish we could get it confirmed by one of the major transfer insiders. But nobody would be surprised if it's true that the club have concluded that neither Sanchez nor Petrovic are considered the elite player in goal we need to advance as a team.

Chelsea axe popular star, 25, from Club World Cup squad as fans say ‘we deserve to fail on all fronts'
CHELSEA have left out goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic from their Club World Cup squad - causing fans to fume. The Blues kick off their campaign in the expanded 32-team tournament on Monday against LA FC. And players had to be registered yesterday evening - causing clubs to scramble in time to sign new stars in time. Chelsea - who failed in bids for Mike Maignan and Jamie Gittens - left Petrovic out along with Raheem Sterling, Joao Felix and Axel Disasi. The 25-year-old stopper was signed from MLS outfit New England Revolution II in 2023 and spent last season on loan with sister side Strasbourg. But Chelsea now start the season with Robert Sanchez Filip Jorgensen and highly-rated 19-year-old Mike Penders. It leaves Petrovic's future in doubt - despite a good season on loan in France - with Monaco among those interested in signing him. One fan said: "This club is a sh** show. Bunch of f***ing stupid clowns running us. "If we sell Petrovic and keep Sanchez as no1 then we deserve to fail on all fronts." Another fumed: "We deserve failure." Watch EVERY match of the Club World Cup 2025 live on DAZN Chelsea have always maintained they are happy with Sanchez and Jorgensen - despite both making errors in games last season. But with AC Milan's Maignan available at a cut-price due to his contract expiring next summer, the West Londoners launched a move to sign him. Chelsea's latest proposal was for a fee of around £12m after Maignan made his desire to move to Stamford Bridge clear, telling Milan he will not renew his deal. Chelsea opened talks after being alerted to the Frenchman's desire to leave, but refused to budge on their valuation. And Milan held out for close to £20m - meaning if a deal is to be struck it must come when the window re-opens on Monday. 3
