BBC Content Supremo Latest: Banijay UK Boss Patrick Holland Out, Kate Phillips Person To Beat
EXCLUSIVE: We have more on the race to replace Charlotte Moore as the BBC's content supremo. After revealing earlier this month that there were three top contenders for the most powerful creative job in British television, audio, and streaming, Deadline hears one of the trio is now not in the running. Holland was considered to be the leading external candidate, even though he told colleagues that he was happy to remain at Banijay UK, where he has been since 2022. BBC sources speculated that salary has been a decisive factor for some external candidates, as the corporation struggles to compete with deep-pocketed commercial counterparts. Moore is paid £468,000 ($628,000). The Holland development, as well Netflix UK chief Anne Mensah ruling herself out, has cemented Kate Phillips' position as the candidate to beat. Phillips, the BBC's unscripted boss and interim chief content officer, has the support of many colleagues at the corporation, while a number of powerful producers are pulling for her to get the job. Sources said Phillips is skillfully caretaking in the content chief role as Moore prepares to leave the BBC's New Broadcasting House headquarters next week. BBC Studios Productions CEO Zai Bennett was thought to be the third strong contender for the job. Others linked include Tom McDonald, the New York-based executive vice president of Nat Geo, and Dan McGolpin, the director of iPlayer and channels. Others have ruled themselves out. This includes Jay Hunt, Apple TV+'s boss in Europe, and Channel 4's content supremo Ian Katz. Sources said Apple executive Alison Kirkham was considered, but is said to be happy in her current role. Liam Keelan, Disney's former EMEA originals chief, is not in the running. Headhunters Grace Blue and Ibison have helped steer the BBC recruitment process, with director general Tim Davie taking a personal interest. Moore is stepping down as chief content officer after four years to join Left Bank Pictures as CEO. She will also oversee international creative output for Sony Pictures Television. Rob Brydon announces return of much-loved comedy Everyone's favourite comedy duo will be returning, and this time they are going up North Rob Brydon will be returning to our screens, as Sky announce another season of his comedy series (Image: PA ) Rob Brydon will be reuniting with comedian and friend Steve Coogan to deliver a new season of The Trip. Five years on from their Grecian adventures, the duo are back together for 'The Trip to the Northern Lights'. This will be the fifth season of their award winning Sky Original series, and will highlight the stark beauty of Northern Europe. Filming will begin in the picturesque landscapes of Scandinavia later this year, but for now the broadcaster have teased the start of the series. A blend of sitcom, travel documentary, and contemplation of midlife, 'The Trip to the Northern Lights' presents Steve and Rob at their argumentative and ingenious peak. Content cannot be displayed without consent In the past the pair have ventured to Italy, Spain, Greece and the original film was set across a restaurant tour of Northern England. In 2010, the first season/film of The Trip from the BBC received an 89% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and it's critical acclaim meant it was later picked up by Sky. Article continues below Fifteen years later the new season will follow them as they embark on a journey across the untamed landscapes of northern Europe, from avant-garde Swedish hotels to secluded Norwegian fishing cabins, showcasing their signature mix of humour, competitive spirit, and introspective musing. The six part series will be under the direction of acclaimed British filmmaker Michael Winterbottom, known for works like 'This England' and '24 Hour Party People', and produced by Revolution Films, Baby Cow Productions (Stever Coogan's company), and Small Man in collaboration with Sky Studios. Both Rob and Steve will be joining Michael as executive producers on the show. Steve Coogan remarked: "I'm delighted that Michael Winterbottom has managed to persuade me at the age of 59 to join Rob, aged 60, to squeeze the last few drops of comedy from a bottle that we both thought was pretty much empty." Their travels prompt discussions on life topics such as ageing, aspirations, family, and fame, often reflecting on their own experiences with podcasting disputes, BAFTA rivalries, and musings on James Bond, Ingmar Bergman, and thoughts of retirement. Rob Brydon expressed his enthusiasm about the upcoming project, saying: "I'm so pleased to be heading out on a Trip once again, this time to beautiful Scandinavia and how lovely to do it while Steve Coogan, Michael Winterbottom and I still have most of our faculties." The Trip, in which the actor stars alongside fellow comedian and actor Steve Coogan, will return for its fifth series titled The Trip to the Northern Lights. According to Sky the brand new series will be in six parts and will see the duo travel the Scandinavian countries. They will also be rejoined by renowned British director Michael Winterbottom, who was also behind This England and 24 Hour Party People. Both Coogan and Brydon play fictionalised versions of themselves in the sitcom show, which follows them on their travels as they stay in hotels, dine in plush restaurants, and perform a series of impersonations. The synopsis for the upcoming series reads: "Rob, 60, and Steve – still very much 59 – set off to explore northern Europe's wildest reaches – from sculptural Swedish hotels to remote Norwegian fishing huts – delivering their trademark blend of wit, rivalry and playful introspection. "Along the way, they reflect on ageing, ambition, family and fame – mostly through the lens they know best: themselves – from podcasting spats and Bafta one-upmanship to debates on Bond, Bergman, and whether they'll ever retire. Equal parts sitcom, travelogue and midlife reckoning, The Trip to the Northern Lights is Coogan and Brydon at their bickering, brilliant best." Meanwhile Coogan starred in the comedy-drama film The Penguin Lessons last year as well as ITV's docudrama The Reckoning about the disgraced DJ and media personality Jimmy Savile.
