Cabinet clears two railway projects worth Rs 6,405 crore in Jharkhand, Karnataka & Andhra Pradesh
In a boost to railway infrastructure and regional connectivity , the PM Modi-led Cabinet on Wednesday approved two multitracking projects — the Koderma–Barkakana doubling in Jharkhand and the Ballari–Chikjajur doubling in Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. According to Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, the work will be completed within the next three years. Together, the plan will expand the Indian Railways network by 318 km, at a total estimated cost of Rs 6,405 crore. Both lines are critical for passenger and freight movement and will significantly reduce carbon emissions while enhancing operational efficiency. "Both projects are crucial for improving connectivity and boosting the economy, benefiting both tribal communities and the general population," said the union minister during a press conference. This line forms the shortest rail connection between Patna and Ranchi and is vital for intercity travel and logistics, according to a government presentation by Vaishnaw. The route passes through four districts in Jharkhand — Koderma, Chatra, Hazaribagh and Ramgarh — and will directly benefit 938 villages and a population of around 15 lakh. The scheme includes construction of 17 major bridges, 180 minor bridges, 42 Road Over Bridges (ROBs), and 13 Road Under Bridges (RUBs), reflecting significant infrastructure enhancement. Live Events Once operational, it is expected to handle an additional 30.4 million tonnes of cargo annually. It is also expected to save 163 crore kilograms of CO₂ emissions and 32 crore litres of diesel per year — an environmental benefit equivalent to planting seven crore trees, said Vaishnaw. Ballari–Chikjajur doubling Meanwhile, the second project, the Ballari–Chikjajur doubling, covers a 185 km stretch and has been cleared at an estimated cost of Rs 3,342 crore. This line connects Mangalore Port to Secunderabad and is critical for moving key commodities such as iron ore, coking coal, steel, fertilizers, petroleum products and foodgrains. The venture will enhance connectivity for Ballari and Chitradurga districts in Karnataka and Ananthpur district in Andhra Pradesh. With 19 stations, 29 major bridges, 230 minor bridges, 21 ROBs and 85 RUBs, the line will offer modernised infrastructure to support freight movement. The Ballari-Chikjajur doubling is likely to benefit around 13 lakh people across 470 villages and facilitate an additional 18.9 million tonnes of cargo annually. Like its Jharkhand counterpart, according to the union minister, this line promises significant environmental gains — reducing carbon emissions by 101 crore kilograms and saving 20 crore litres of diesel annually, equivalent to planting four crore trees.

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Wednesday said that major projects worth Rs 35,000 crore under NHAI are currently being built in the national capital, while earlier projects worth Rs 64,000 crore have been completed. More projects worth Rs 24,000 crore are also set to begin soon. The meeting was held at the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, Delhi. Gupta thanked the Central Government and Union Minister Nitin Gadkari for approving and completing several major road and infrastructure projects in the city. During the press conference, Rekha Gupta said, "I want to thank the Central Government and Union Minister Nitin Gadkari for the massive support given to Delhi through several important road and infrastructure projects. Right now, a major project worth Rs 35,000 crore is being built in Delhi under the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI). Earlier, projects worth Rs 64,000 crore were successfully completed. In the near future, projects worth another Rs 24,000 crore, whose detailed project reports (DPRs) are ready, will also begin." Gupta said that several major road projects are being planned to reduce traffic jams and pollution in the city. She announced that a 7-kilometre tunnel from Shiv Murti to Nelson Mandela Road, new highways linking Delhi to Katra, Amritsar and Dehradun, and an elevated road from INA to the airport are part of the plan. Roads like Rohtak Road, Nangloi, Ashram, and Badarpur will also be made signal-free soon. "All these efforts aim to reduce traffic congestion and pollution in Delhi. To improve traffic flow, a 7-kilometre underground tunnel will be constructed from Shiv Murti to Nelson Mandela Road. There will also be an elevated road connecting INA to the airport, which will later extend to Faridabad and Gurgaon. A new highway from Delhi to Katra and Amritsar will be developed and linked to the Urban Extension Road (UER 2). Another major highway will run from Alipur to Tronica City and will connect Delhi to Dehradun. This means people travelling from Haryana to Dehradun or from Dehradun to Noida won't need to enter Delhi, easing traffic inside the city. A tunnel from Sarai Kale Khan to Indira Gandhi Airport is also being considered. Several other roads in Delhi, including Rohtak Road, Nangloi, Ashram, Badarpur, and MJ Road, have been taken over by NHAI and will be made signal-free. Their work will start soon," Gupta said. "NHAI will look into the drainage system, and from that drainage systems will also be improved along these roads, solving long-standing issues of waterlogging caused by multiple agencies. PWD will also look into it. Additionally, Rs 150 crore has been approved for Road Over Bridges (ROBs) and Road Under Bridges (RUBs)," Gupta said. She said that ongoing and upcoming projects worth over Rs 1.25 lakh crore will help reduce traffic jams, lower pollution, and improve travel in and around Delhi. "Overall, I thank the Central Government for the projects worth Rs 1.25 lakh crore that are helping transform Delhi into a modern, clean, and green city. With continued support, Delhi will become a world-class capital," Gupta said. In the meeting, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari and Delhi Lt Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena were also present in the meeting.

PM Modi increased Kerala's railway budget to Rs 3,042 crore: Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw
New Delhi [India], June 3 (ANI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led Union government has increased Kerala's railway budget from an average of Rs 372 Crore (2009-14) to Rs 3,042 crore in the financial year 2025-26, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said on Tuesday. 'PM Narendra Modi Ji has increased Kerala's railway budget from an average Rs372 Cr (2009-14) to Rs3,042 Cr in FY 2025-26. We are working on 3rd and 4th line from North to South Kerala, so that both passengers and cargo can move by rail,' Vaishnaw said in a post X. Vaishnaw said that he discussed key projects with Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and sought his support for land acquisition, especially for Angamaly-Erumeli railway project and Road Over Bridges (ROB) and Road Under Bridges (RUB) being sanctioned. The Angamaly-Erumeli railway project, also known as Sabari rail project was first proposed in the Railway Budget of 1997-98. The land acquisition for the project was completed too. The Kerala CM has earlier said that the expansion of the Sabari rail project would provide a significant boost to Kerala's development, while also suggesting that it could be extended in the future to connect Vizhinjam. In December, an official statement from the Kerala CM's office said that the project would be implemented in two phases with an expanded approach, with the state government requesting the Centre's approval, and 50 per cent of the cost of the project will be borne by the state government. The section's plan included the construction of two flyovers and two underpasses. However, land acquisition notifications have now been issued for the next 70 km. A letter from the Railways dated 26.09.2019 informed the state government that the project had been frozen, leading to a halt in further construction activities, including the flyovers. Although the project initially began with full funding from the Railways, on January 7, 2021, the Kerala Government conveyed to the Central Government its readiness to bear 50 per cent of the project cost, then estimated at Rs 2,815 crore, through Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board (KIIFB).
