500 federal agents and soldiers raid marijuana farms in rural Southern California
The National Guard and federal agencies joined the Drug Enforcement Administration to raid multiple marijuana grow operations in Southern California. The massive operation consisted of 500 personnel and took place in Thermal, a rural city in Riverside County near Coachella, according to the DEA. The federal agency said the task force included the Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Customs and Border Patrol, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, FBI and the National Guard. The DEA posted on social media that it requested help from the agencies and the Army because of the "magnitude and topography of this operation." A DEA spokesperson said the mission was aimed at illegal marijuana farms spanning about 787 acres in the Coachella Valley town. "The operation is authorized by federal search warrants signed by a federal magistrate judge," the DEA wrote on X. Federal agents arrested between 70 and 75 undocumented immigrants and one U.S. citizen for impeding law enforcement. Rider Fire in Riverside County forces temporary evacuation orders
Some evacuation orders were issued in the Mead Valley region of Riverside County on Wednesday due to a fast-growing brush fire. The Rider Fire, which was first reported just before 5:30 p.m. near Rider Street and Seaton Avenue, west of the 215 Freeway, has burned nearly 50 acres, according to the Riverside County Fire Department. Four Cal Fire air tankers and two water-dropping helicopters joined hand crews as they attempted to control the flames, which briefly threatened at least one structure, firefighters said. As the fire burned, firefighters issued evacuation orders and warnings for people living on Old Elsinore Road. Several roads were also closed due to the firefight. All evacuations have since been lifted and crews are expected to remain at the scene overnight to continue strengthening containment lines, Cal Fire said. No injuries have been reported and no structures are believed to have been damaged. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Officials say 71/91 Freeway interchange project in Corona will be completed this summer
After nearly two years of construction, the 71/91 Interchange Project will finally be completed this summer, according to the Riverside County Transportation Commission. The work began back in late-2023, with the goal of replacing what is currently a single-lane connector between the eastbound 91 Freeway and the 71 Freeway with a two-lane connector loop. Work will still continue in coming weeks though, with the next major phase coming this weekend. Starting on Friday at 9 p.m., all westbound lanes of the 91 Freeway connector will be closed until 6 a.m., while the next night the Green River ramp will be closed from Friday at 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. on Monday. The newly-constructed bridge between the eastbound 91 and northbound 71 will open at 6 a.m on Saturday morning, RCTC officials said. The project, which cost approximately $137 million, will allow the busy thoroughfare to accommodate more cars and realign for a new connector. It was funded in part by the California Road Repair & Accountability Act of 2017, which hiked gasoline taxes to pay for state infrastructure and other projects. Additional funding was provided by Measure A receipts, which is generated by a half-cent sales tax. The rest is provided by federal funding and other sources, officials said. More information on the project can be found on RCTC's website.
