Spitfire replica to grace Scarborough seafront for Armed Forces Day

A life-size Spitfire replica will occupy Scarborough's seafront during Armed Forces Day celebrations later this month. Lee Threadgold, artistic director of local arts organisation Animated Objects, which is constructing the replica Mk1 Spitfire, said: "The Spitfire is by far one of the most ambitious projects we've ever undertaken. "It's such a landmark piece of engineering and aviation history that people recognise every curve and facet of the aircraft at first sight, and it's our job to ensure we recreate that faithfully." Scarborough will host a range of tributes, displays, and entertainments for Armed Forces Day, which will take place on Saturday, June 28. The event will run from 11am to 5pm and will include flypasts from the Royal Air Force (which will be sending the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight); a 1930s Tiger Moth; Rich Goodwin, in his jet-powered muscle biplane; the Starlings Aerobatics Team; and squadron leader Nathan Shawyer in an RAF Typhoon. Guernsey Air Display to showcase Red Arrows and RAF Typhoon in new evening slot

Guernsey will welcome back the Red Arrows as part of the island's popular annual air show. Also set to take to the skies are the RAF Typhoon Display Team and the Dakota from the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight (BBMF). This year, the event has moved back to its usual September slot but will start later in the day, which organisers hope will help make it more accessible. Barry Neal, Flying Display Director, adds: "The Reds and BBMF are stalwarts of the display, and a highlight for many. "We always apply for the Typhoon but we're rarely successful so that will be a fantastic addition. Everyone loves a fast and noisy jet." Other performers include Rich Goodwin and his Pitts Biplane, and Airborne Pyrotechnics which will round off the show. Natalie Davidson, Event Organiser, says: "We're expecting much bigger crowds to be able to enjoy this wonderful event. For the first evening display to have such a great lineup of aircraft is very exciting." The Guernsey Air Display is a free event which relies on sponsorship and donations, it will take place from 6:30pm to 8pm on Wednesday 10 September.
