BAM boss Zafrul commends shuttlers for good showing, urges to keep it up

PETALING JAYA: The Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) president Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz commended the national players and coaches for returning home with good results from recent outings. He however, jokingly denied that his recent presidency had anything to do with it; instead, it was the hard work of both players and coaches. Men's doubles pair Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik won the Singapore Open earlier this month, as well as the Thailand Open last month, and finished as runners-up to compatriots Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun at the Malaysian Masters last month as well. Pearly-Thinaah recently made it to the Indonesian Open final but ended their run in the Super 1000 tournament as runners-up to China's Liu Shengshu-Tan Ning. They also captured the Thailand Open last month, while also reaching the Malaysian Masters semi-finals and quarter-finals at the Singapore Open after that. "It can't be because of me, but it does show that the coaches, especially in the doubles department, have done good work," said Zafrul after a visit at the Academy Badminton Malaysia (ABM) at Kiara. "The results reflect that. But in my view, there's still plenty more to be done, especially for those handling the singles department. "We're pleased with what our players have achieved. I hope those competing at the Japan and China Open will continue to be consistent," he said.

Stay hungry for LA28: Rexy tells doubles aces despite recent success
PUTRAJAYA, June 10 — The success garnered by several national doubles players should not make them too comfortable to the point of affecting their performance. That was among the reminders given by the national doubles coaching director, Rexy Mainaky, to his charges given that they still have many tournaments to go and they still have a lot to catch up, besides having to work harder in their efforts to pursue the bigger dream, which is the Los Angeles 2028 (LA28) Olympic Games. 'If we talk about satisfaction, we should appreciate what the players have done with satisfaction. 'But we must remember not to let that satisfaction cause us to be complacent because there are still many tournaments and the Olympics is still far away,' he said when met after the Road To Gold meeting at Menara Kementerian Belia dan Sukan (KBS) here today. Earlier, two men's doubles pairs, Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik and Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun, displayed impressive performances in several recent tournaments they participated in. For Chia and Soh, they managed to win three titles in three months, namely the Asian Badminton Championships in April, the Thailand Open (May) and the Singapore Open earlier this month, while Man and Tee won the Malaysian Masters. In addition, the national women's doubles pair of Pearly Tan-M Thinaah were also no less impressive when they won the Thailand Open. Meanwhile, Rexy also expressed his gratitude to the RTG committee, especially to the Minister of Youth and Sports Hannah Yeoh who started the programme early. 'I think we are the first country to prepare for LA28 by establishing the RTG programme. For me this is a positive development for the RTG athletes,' he said. — Bernama

There's a spring in Rexy's steps these days, thanks to our doubles shuttlers

As Rexy watched on, men's doubles pair Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun defeated teammates Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik to capture the Malaysian Masters title at the Axiata Arena in Bukit Jalil on Sunday. The victory was a huge breakthrough for Malaysia as it ended a 12-year wait for a men's doubles title in the competition since Goh V Shem-Lim Khim Wah's triumph in 2013. V Shem-Khim Wah also had been the last Malaysians to win a men's doubles title on home soil after they won the Malaysian Open in 2014. Wei Chong-Kai Wun did come the closest to ending the drought in the 2023 Malaysian Masters but were denied by South Korea's Kang Min-hyuk-Seo Seung-jae in the final. This time, there was no stopping the pair as they made amends in front of the passionate home fans. World No. 8 Wei Chong-Kai Wun's title win followed the success of mixed doubles pair Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai Jemie, who ended a seven year-wait for a Malaysian winner in the home Masters last year. Before Soon Huat-Shevon's breakthrough, 2017 winners Tan Kian Meng-Lai Pei Jing were the last Malaysians to capture the Masters crown while 2018 Malaysian Open champion Datuk Lee Chong Wei (men's singles) was the last to win at home. Rexy was happy to see his charges triumph after overseeing years of disappointments. 'I know before this, many have been disappointed as we had no winners in the home tournament,' said Rexy. 'This time, there was an all-Malaysian men's doubles final after 12 years, so this is something positive. 'I can see many changes in our pairs. Previously, they were relying more on strength and speed but now they can adapt their game to different situations on court. 'Our players are getting better at controlling their emotions and placing the shuttle. 'We can't be too satisfied though as we need to make sure our players stay confident moving forward,' added Rexy.
