KUCHING (June 18): More than 300 students, mainly from Primary 5, Primary 6, and Form 1, have visited the STEM Catalysts Raspberry Pi 2025 tour in Betong, said Sarawak Skills. In a press release today, Sarawak Skills said Betong was the seventh out of 18 stops for the statewide tour. STEM Catalysts is a touring science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) carnival organised by the Ministry of Education, Innovation and Talent Development to spur pupils' interests in STEM, particularly those from rural primary schools. The 2025 edition features the use of coding and Raspberry Pi to make use of STEM knowledge, including the use of Raspberry Pi to control hydraulic systems to lift very heavy objects guided by Pascal's Law. Youth, Sport and Entrepreneur Development Deputy Minister Datuk Gerald Rentap Jabu, who is Layar assemblyman, officially opened the event at the Betong District Education Office yesterday. He said STEM awareness and interests must be inculcated in students as early as possible to get them ready for the technology driven and competitive world. 'Therefore, I hope events such as STEM Catalysts can be carried out more frequently and with participation from parents and the public. We need everyone's participation to nurture our young ones,' he said. Students observe one of the STEM exhibits. STEM Catalysts is one of the many initiatives coordinated by the Ministry of Education, Innovation and Talent Development to achieve the target of increasing STEM enrolment in Sarawak from 30 per cent to 60 per cent, to produce enough talents for the state. The event involved staff and students from Sarawak Skills and University of Technology Sarawak, as well as STEM communicators from the Sarawak Science Centre. Persatuan Kebajikan Rolf Schnyder, a philanthropic organisation which provides education support to children, also organised a mini coding competition. The tour will move on to Lubok Antu and Simunjan, followed by Kanowit, Song, and Kapit next week. It is expected to cover 100 schools by the end of the month. In presenting this proposal, Deputy Minister of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Dato Gerald Rentap Jabu hails the event as not only showcasing the rich cultural heritage of the Dayak community, but also aligning with Sarawak's tourism policies. 'Let us turn this (event) into a lasting legacy, an annual affair. 'This is the third year that it's being organised. 'With full support from all sides, tourism products like this would thrive and should grow into a sustainable tourism product,' he said in officiating at the event last Saturday, as reported by Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas). Hosted at Rumah Engkeranji, the Gawai Dayak open house gathered more than 1,500 people, including local and international tourists. The June 7 programme was part of the Betong Division Gawai Dayak Festive Celebration 2025, being run throughout May and June in close collaboration between the local communities and the government. Rentap, the assemblyman for Layar, also spoke about the uniqueness of the Gawai Dayak celebration, with its rich customs and traditions, which exhibited a strong potential to attract more foreign visitors. In this regard, he highlighted the importance of collaboration with entities such as STF that had successfully attracted 120 international tourists from Brunei, Indonesia, Australia, Singapore, the UK and Italy through a specially-curated tourism package. Meanwhile, STF chairperson Audrey Wan Ulok said the '3 Days, 2 Nights' package offered tourists a deep cultural immersion into Iban traditions, including overnight stays at the longhouse, as well as participation on the traditional Gawai parade, local feasts, and cultural concerts. The evening was further enlivened by various traditional performances such as the 'ngajat' (Iban traditional dance) and also the 'Taboh Iban' and'Gendang Pampat' (drum instruments). There was also the Gawai Kaamatan Concert 2025, a fusion of native cultural elements from Sarawak and Sabah featuring participation from the Kadazan Dusun Cultural Association (KDCA) Sarawak branch, in addition to performances by local artist Melissa Francis and renowned sape musician Jerry Kamit. Also present were Betong MP Dr Richard Rapu; Krian assemblyman Friday Belik; and Momogun National Congress president Tan Sri Wences Angang. The programme was supported by the Ministry of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Sarawak, and co-hosted by the Betong Division Gawai Dayak Celebration Main Committee. It is later reported that following this year's success, STF aims to establish the Gawai Dayak Open House at Rumah Engkeranji as a flagship annual cultural tourism event for Sarawak, further elevating the Dayak heritage as a vital tourism asset for the state. S'wak Deputy Minister backs Fazzrudin for FAS presidency
Rentap expressee his hope that Fazzrudin will secure the presidency at the upcoming FAS Annual General Meeting scheduled for June 14. KUCHING (May 29): Chief Political Secretary to the Premier of Sarawak, Dato Fazzrudin Abdul Rahman is the right person to lead the Football Association of Sarawak (FAS), said State Deputy Minister of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development, Dato Gerald Rentap Jabu. He expressed his hope that the Kuching City Football Club chairman will secure the presidency at the upcoming FAS Annual General Meeting scheduled for June 14. 'I hope Fazzrudin will be able to lead FAS because we can see that football is a sport that can really lift our spirits wherever we are, be it in the villages or towns and anywhere else. 'I think he is the right choice to be the next FAS president. He had served as assistant chef de mission for football in Sukma just like what I did in Sukma Terengganu. 'Furthermore, he has the experience as Kuching City Football Club chairman and is familiar with FAS key strengths for the role,' Rentap told reporters after the press conference on the ASF Asian Individual Championships and ASF Asian Doubles Championships at a hotel here today. He added that Fazzrudin, who is also the Tupong assemblyman, is actively involved with youth development and athletics, serving as patron of the Axis Club. Rentap, who is Layar assemblyman, further emphasised the importance of nurturing football talent at the grassroots level. 'The Petronas Youth Football Closed Tournament is a collaborative programme that has helped develop young talents in the Under-10, Under-12 and Under-16 age categories and is a step in the right direction. 'We are hoping that it can develop into a football league for Sarawak but we are focusing on developing the young players. 'If we don't have young players how are we going to find senior players later?' he said. FAS fazzrudin abdul rahman Gerald Rentap Jabu presidency

Produce Scholarly Works On Rentap, Bukit Sadok To Preserve Sarawak's Heritage
KUCHING, May 24 (Bernama) -- Local literary works detailing the events at Bukit Sadok, which chronicle the struggles of Iban warrior Rentap, should be produced comprehensively to preserve Sarawak's historical heritage, State Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said. Such books must be rich in historical facts about Rentap's heroism, including thorough research on whether the warrior had any links to piracy during the Brooke administration, he said. 'If possible, conduct studies from our historical perspective because there are connections to piracy. Was Rentap truly involved? Therefore, undertake historical research like what Datuk Dr Sanib Said has done... perhaps we can write this book from our perspective, supported by facts.
