‘The Gilded Age' Season 3 Trailer: A New Generation Rises as Carrie Coon Tries to Secure Her Status in High Society

'The Gilded Age' is ushering in a new era. The third season of the beloved HBO series marks the start of Bertha's (Carrie Coon) reign. She already has secured her status as the patron saint of the Metropolitan Opera: Can she now have the approval of the old money elites? The Season 3 logline reads: 'Following the Opera War, the old guard is weakened and the Russells stand poised to take their place at the head of society. Bertha sets her sights on a prize that would elevate the family to unimaginable heights while George risks everything on a gambit that could revolutionize the railroad industry — if it doesn't ruin him first. Across the street, the Brook household is thrown into chaos as Agnes refuses to accept Ada's new position as lady of the house. Peggy meets a handsome doctor from Newport whose family is less than enthusiastic about her career. As all of New York hastens toward the future, their ambition may come at the cost of what they truly hold dear.' David Gauvey Herbert Reveals ‘Ren Faire' Director Lance Oppenheim's Disarming Methods

On June 5, the IndieWire Honors Spring 2025 ceremony will celebrate the creators and stars responsible for some of the most impressive and engaging work of this TV season. Curated and selected by IndieWire's editorial team, IndieWire Honors is a celebration of the creators, artisans, and performers behind television well worth toasting. In the days leading up to the event, IndieWire is showcasing their work with new interviews and tributes from their peers. Ahead, journalist and 'Ren Faire' executive producer David Gauvey Herbert shares the story of his first meeting with Magnify Award winner Lance Oppenheim, and what he observed working alongside him on their critically acclaimed HBO three-part docu-drama. More from IndieWire The Cast and Crew of 'St. Denis Medical' Found Joy and Warmth in the Show's Hospital Setting 'The Gilded Age' Season 3 Trailer: A New Generation Rises as Carrie Coon Tries to Secure Her Status in High Society Several years ago, after a brief Zoom courtship, I met Lance at Frank's Wine Bar in Carroll Gardens and ordered him his first-ever martini. The waitress considered carding him, but then took me, I think, for a responsible, much older brother. 'Oh wowww,' he said upon tasting the cold gin, but in a pitch better suited to a young couple entering a roomy master bathroom on 'House Hunters.' I was taken with his charms and talent, and I soon pitched him on a succession crisis at America's largest Renaissance festival, just outside Houston, Texas. But on set, with prospective subjects, this endearing young ingenue became a bumbling neurotic. It was maddening to watch. He overshared about his ex-girlfriend, his Florida home, his internet addictions. 'Put these people at ease!' I wanted to yell. 'Stop acting like you're in therapy.' But I was coming from print magazines, and I hadn't yet encountered the Lance Method. This wasn't journalism, it was jiu jitsu. He pressed and pulled until he found a way to drop you onto his sweaty mat, and forced you to surrender to his impish charisma and good nature. A popcorn vendor would enter a three-minute conversation with Lance, and then blink to find he'd just finished a three-year collaboration. Lance ran the set with this same inverted logic. The crew wasn't a crew. It was a writer's room, a chaotic docu-democracy that resulted in long days, frayed nerves — and a profound devotion to the work. They labored through 110-degree heat, a scurvy-inducing lack of fresh produce, and an Airbnb owner who responded to complaints about a fishy fridge by showing up with a rifle. Lance's ability to foster this collective fellowship — bordering on collective insanity — would have served him well in Jonestown. We're lucky to have him in Hollywood instead. I may have introduced him to martinis and, later, his wife, but Lance returns favors. He's criminally generous with his Rolodex. But mostly, he nudges me to think bigger. It was 1 a.m. and still a million degrees in Grimes County, Texas. I was grousing about the time, the many hours we'd put in that day, my feet. 'If we're not pushing past our limits,' he asked, 'then what are we doing?' In an industry that can walk in endless circles of mediocrity, Lance has his compass set in a different direction. I'm grateful to have marched alongside him. Sherri Papini Breaks Silence About Her ‘Abduction' in New Docuseries Trailer

Sherri Papini recounts her 'abduction' in her own words — truthful or not — in the new trailer for a four-part ID docuseries premiering next month. Sherri Papini: Caught in the Lie, out May 26 and May 27 on ID and Max, features the California mother of two talking on camera about her headline-grabbing disappearance in 2016 for the first time since the incident occurred nearly nine years ago. More from Rolling Stone 'Gone Girls': See New Trailer for Netflix's Long Island Serial Killer Docuseries New Docuseries Examines the Infamous 'Stanford Prison Experiment' Feuding Co-Workers Get Medieval on Each Other in 'Ren Faire' 'Haven't you ever lied? And then has that lie blown up?' Papini says in the trailer, while reiterating her version of events that authorities have deemed were fabricated: 'I went missing in 2016. I was gone for 22 days. I was tortured, I was branded, I was chained to a wall. All of that is true. I did keep some secrets from you, though.' In order to prove her innocence — 'I'm Sherri Papini. I was abducted and I was tortured and the FBI said I made it all up,' she reiterates in the trailer — Papini undergoes a lie detector test, the results of which will likely be revealed over the course of the four-part series (though the docuseries' title seems to hint at the answer). Boasting 'unprecedented access to Papini,' ID said of the docuseries in a synopsis, 'Over the course of four-parts, Sherri Papini: Caught in the Lie retraces Papini's case from the days leading up to her disappearance into her alleged abduction, her shocking return to her family, and the subsequent aftermath that led to her 2022 arrest by federal authorities. For the first time, Papini will share her account of events as she recalls them, offering rare insights into her mindset during her disappearance and the subsequent investigation into her abduction claims upon her return home. Sherri Papini: Caught in the Lie will also chronicle the aftermath of her 2022 guilty plea that Papini continues to navigate, including her present custody battle with her ex-husband, Keith Papini, as she seeks joint custody of their children.' ID added that the docuseries 'will delve deeper into Papini's case to include insight from her parents and sister-in-law, the federal authorities who investigated her disappearance and prosecuted her for lying to the FBI, her former lawyer, her psychologist, as well as the podcaster who followed her story closely, among others. Through these interviews and extensive access to archival footage, legal documents, and court filings, a new picture of her case emerges – illuminating an entirely different side of the story.' Cannes 2025 wrap: ‘Sentimental Value,' Jennifer Lawrence, June Squibb, and the 2026 Oscar contenders to know

The 2026 Oscar race has already started. Over the last two weeks, several major titles premiered at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival, and it's a safe bet to assume many of the films and performances launched on the French Riviera will play a significant part in the forthcoming awards season. More from GoldDerby 'Ren Faire' director Lance Oppenheim on the corrupting influence of power and accidentally capturing 'America in miniature' How Eddie Redmayne crafted his 'deeply unflappable' assassin on 'The Day of the Jackal' How 'Succession' creator Jesse Armstrong freshly explores mega wealth through tech bro one-upmanship in 'Mountainhead' Ahead, the movies and actors who gained the most during the Cannes Film Festival. Heading into this year's Cannes Film Festival, no movie had more awards buzz than Sentimental Value — and yet, somehow, it seems like the actual film surpassed those lofty expectations. The response at Cannes to Joachim Trier's latest was nothing short of ecstatic: Sentimental Value earned an absurd 19-minute standing ovation and was called a 'masterpiece' by critics and instantly became the film to beat for the Palme d'Or. Regarding its awards prospects, expect most pundits to pencil this one in for nominations in Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, Best Actress for Renate Reinsve, and Best Supporting Actor for Stellan Skarsgård. 'Is Jennifer Lawrence About to Win Another Oscar?' asked Vanity Fair writer David Canfield after Die, My Love premiered at the Cannes Film Festival. It's a good question, unanswerable right now. Still, Lawrence's return to the Academy Awards as a nominee for the first time in 10 years seems likely. The Oscar winner received rave reviews for her portrait of a young mother caught in the grips of postpartum depression in Lynne Ramsay's latest. 'Cannes is a festival where Oscar narratives typically start to take shape, and while it's far too early to make predictions, Lawrence has announced herself as an early frontrunner,' wrote Esther Zuckerman for The Daily Beast. Overall reviews for Die, My Love leaned mixed — the movie, it seems, won't be for everyone — but that didn't stop Mubi from acquiring the project for a reported $20 million. It's potentially a perfect match, especially after Mubi threaded the awards needle this year with The Substance, another polarizing project from a female director that premiered at Cannes and drove Demi Moore into the Best Actress field. This year, three of the five Best Actress nominees, including winner Mikey Madison, started at the Cannes Film Festival. Next year, history could repeat itself as Reinsve, Lawrence, and June Squibb could all land acting bids. Squibb, who would be the oldest nominee ever, plays the title character in Scarlett Johansson's directorial debut, Eleanor the Great. While the movie received some mixed reviews from critics, everyone seemed to agree that the 95-year-old actress has perhaps never been better. Sony Pictures Classics, a studio known for its ability to push unlikely contenders into the awards race — including Fernanda Torres this year for I'm Still Here — will release Eleanor the Great this fall. Reviews for Spike Lee's Highest 2 Lowest suggest the movie is more of an entertaining thriller than a serious awards contender, which is excellent news for people who like their films to be movies. However, star Denzel Washington was frequently singled out as being at the top of his game. 'Washington is smooth as silk, delivering one of his best recent performances as a man caught in an impossible moral quandary,' wrote Pete Hammond for Deadline. 'It feels pointless to wax poetic about Denzel Washington's immense talent, but it needs to be said here as the now 70-year-old living legend continues to prove time and time again why he is one of the greatest actors of all,' added Matt Neglia for Next Best Picture. Washington missed an expected Oscar bid last year for Gladiator II, and the Best Actor field will probably have several significant contenders this year — including Leonardo DiCaprio and Daniel Day-Lewis — but counting out the two-time Oscar winner feels foolish. Wes Anderson's new movie seems like par for the course for the famously fastidious filmmaker. So, let's already pencil in some Oscar buzz for production designer Adam Stockhausen, a four-time nominee who won an Oscar for Anderson's The Grand Budapest Hotel. Reviews for The Phoenician Scheme hailed the project as Anderson's best since that 2014 classic, and many singled out Stockhausen's intricate sets and designs. Richard Linklater's French-language film about the making of Jean-Luc Godard's Breathless received polite praise after its premiere, and currently lacks distribution. However, at least one awards pundit has already compared the project, shot in black-and-white, to The Artist, which won Best Picture. It's a different era of the Academy, but Hollywood loves to celebrate projects about filmmaking. So, once Nouvelle Vague gets dated, consider it an Oscar contender to watch for that comparison alone.
