Antiques: A hot Georgian wine cooler and a cool Edwardian desk in Cork

A hot Georgian wine cooler or a cool Edwardian desk? The choice is yours at Woodwards summer auction in Cork next Saturday (June 28). Well-positioned each of these stylish antique pieces can add grace to most homes. Estimated respectively at €600-€800 and €400-€600, they are not particularly expensive and would have cost more 20 years ago. Such is the sad state of the market for antique furniture. The happy news (if that is not a contradiction in terms right now) is that furniture like this does offer spectacular value. The sale at Woodwards is rich in such pieces like a Regency crossbanded tea table (€400-€600), a D-end dining table (€200-€400), a parquetry inlaid hall table (€200-€400), a Victorian walnut davenport (€300-€500), a William IV card table (€250-€400) and a Regency Pembroke table (€300-€600). Among other offerings are a large Persian rug (€500-€800), a five-piece cast-iron patio suite (€800-€1,200), a gilt console mirror with marble tabletop (€800-€1,200) and art including Vanity Fair Spy prints and Victorian silhouettes and collectibles. The online auction starts at 10am next Saturday (June 28) and is on view at Woodwards from 2pm to 4pm today and tomorrow and from 10am to 4pm all next week.

Bridgerton icon's ‘hidden talent' exposed by co-star in scandalous new series

James Purefoy revealed his co-star Bessie Carter of Bridgerton fame has a surprising hidden talent Outrageous star James Purefoy has praised his co-performer Bessie Carter ahead of their new project premiering this week. The Bridgerton breakout was previously best known for portraying Prudence Featherington in the hit Netflix series but takes on a totally different role in U and U&Drama's new period drama. ‌ Set over 100 years after the Regency romance, with the Second World War looming, Carter portrays renowned writer Nancy Mitford, the daughter of Purefoy's David Freeman-Mitford. ‌ As their father struggles to keep his family's footing amongst the elite amidst Britain's financial woes, Nancy's sisters start to make names for themselves as socialites and fascist sympathisers. 'She seizes it like Atlas, it's on her shoulders, the show,' Purefoy said of Carter at Outrageous' London premiere. Article continues below Reflecting on their scenes together, the Sex Education star shares one unexpected talent stuck out during filming. 'She's so cool and so calm and so collected and talks so fast,' he went on. 'It's a habit I've never really gotten into, but she could talk very fast when she's acting and I love that. ‌ 'Makes the editors really pleased because you can get so much into a scene.' Despite Carter's knack for speedy line reading, her co-star Orla Hill, who portrays Deborah Mitford, revealed some scenes actually took days to get right. 'Basically, any scene where we sat around the kitchen table took about three days,' she admitted. ‌ 'The whole time we're either sat at the table filming it or we're sat in a room next to that room just kind of hanging out.' Hill also revealed she struck up a strong bond with another one of her co-stars thanks to their close proximity. ‌ 'I live round the corner from [Joanna Vanderham] so we got driven into work together at, like, 6am every day and driven back together at 9pm,' she recalled. 'So we spent all the time together when it was like that. There was definitely a big sense of camaraderie. 'There was a lot of that joking around. For me, Deborah is 14-16 in the show so she's that silly, younger self and I myself am a silly younger sister so I enjoyed that very much.' Promising romance, family drama and scandals galore, Outrageous is a must-watch for both Bridgerton and Downton Abbey fans once it releases to stream for free this week.

'Steamy' Jane Austen period drama and it's free to watch on ITV

The period drama is based on Jane Austen's final, but incomplete, written work Devotees of the enchanting romances like Pride and Prejudice or the exhilarating escapades in Bridgerton are certain to fall for Sanditon, a series adapted from Jane Austen's last and incomplete piece. Spanning three seasons, Sanditon arises from the unfinished writings of Jane Austen, discovered post her premature passing. ‌ The opening episode remains faithful to Jane Austen's original text, then swiftly branches out as the show creators expand on her beloved characters to craft a narrative that resonates with contemporary viewers. ‌ Applauding the adaptation, a Rotten Tomatoes reviewer enthused: "This show is a beautiful story with vivid characters that are so relatable. Jane Austen's final, unfinished work was brought to life beautifully by all involved. "And the chemistry between Rose Williams as Charlotte and Ben Lloyd-Hughes as Alexander was off the CHARTS. The entire cast was on point; the music, cinematography, scenery, scripts, etc. - everything was truly remarkable." The drama unfolds amidst the grandeur and allure of the Regency period and follows protagonist Charlotte Heywood as she delves into the activities of the newly established coastal getaway, Sanditon. Eager to immerse herself but also intrigued by the local intrigue, Charlotte finds herself entwined with the secrets of those around her, reports the Express. Series one features Theo James as the dashing hero captivating the heart of the naive Charlotte, culminating in their passionate liaison before his character's exit ahead of the show's second season. Viewers have been heaping praise on the ensemble cast for their collective performances in Sanditon, particularly highlighting the chemistry between Rose Williams and Ben Lloyd-Hughes as Charlotte and Alexander Colbourne in the second season. ‌ One review succinctly sums up the sentiment: "Masterful storytelling. Exquisite performances by Rose Williams and Ben Lloyd-Hughes establish Charlotte Heywood and Alexander Colbourne as an iconic Austen couple. Bring them back to tell more stories of their life in Sanditon." Echoing this enthusiasm, another viewer expressed contentment with the first season stating: "Season 1 is fresh and exciting. A unique take on Austen by the master of Austen adaptations, Andrew Davies." Despite the accolades, some viewers have pointed out the show's imperfections: "That said, it's far from perfect and takes many liberties with the source material, but it's bold, edgy, and sexy as hell (even though most of the characters keep their clothes on)". ‌ The romantic entanglements within the series seem to resonate well with the audience, fitting perfectly into the mould of what makes a captivating period drama. The third and climaxing season sees Charlotte making a return to a now flourishing Sanditon, right in time for a grand festivity. But her attempts to join the celebration are marred by a tense reunion with former flame Alexander Colbourne, reawakening old emotions. With the final instalment boasting a spotless 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, one critic from The Times reflected on the growth of the series: "After a tame series one and two, Sanditon may finally have found its soul. And a flavour that at least faintly tastes of Jane Austen.
