Ottawa Redblacks weather conditions, down Calgary Stampeders for first win of CFL season

Article content The Ottawa Redblacks did what they had to for their first win of the Canadian Football League season Saturday. Article content Article content On a windy, rainy and cold afternoon at McMahon Stadium, the Redblacks used a strong running game, a stout defence and the kicking boot of Lewis Ward to hand the Calgary Stampeders their first loss of the season. Article content In the 20-12 victory that improved the Redblacks record to 1-2 and moved them from last in the East Division into second place, Dustin Crum surely improved his standing from third-string quarterback to the primary backup behind the injured Dru Brown by not turning the ball over and picking up the W. Article content Article content Crum, who completed just nine of 22 passes because the conditions gave normally sure-handed receivers slippery fingers, ran 11 times for 64 yards. Article content Article content And, while William Stanback had his best game as a Redblack with nine carries for 82 yards, stealing the spotlight was his platoon partner in the backfield. Article content Canadian running back Daniel Adeboboye scored the game's only touchdown with 5:02 left, when he pulled in a nine-yard pass from Crum. Article content Right before that, Adeboboye made the biggest offensive play of the day when he took a handoff and burst up the middle for a 52-yard gain. Article content Adeboboye finished the game with 10 carries for 96 yards. Article content The Redblacks' defence was credited with five turnovers, including a late fourth-quarter interception by safety Charlie Ringland, and stopped the Vernon Adams Jr.-directed Calgary offence for the third time on a third-down play to seal the outcome. Article content Article content Ward was 4-for-5 on field goal attempts with scoring boots of 34, 22, 26 and 33 yards before a late 48-yard attempt hit the left upright and stayed out. Article content The Redblacks also cleaned up a trouble spot by taking just four penalties for 26 yards. Article content They held a 6-2 first-half lead that could have been mistaken for the score of a Senators-Flames National Hockey League game. Article content On Ottawa's first possession, Crum ran three times for 30 yards during a 10-play, 52-yard drive that ended with a Ward field goal from the 34. Article content When Calgary's Rene Paredes was wide with a 43-yard field-goal attempt later in the first quarter, Devonte Dedmon returned the ball to Ottawa's 12-yard line, but the Redblacks' Robert Priester was called for an illegal block, and the ball was brought back to the one.

How Ottawa Redblacks star Adarius Pickett managed to return from serious injury for CFL season opener

Article content 'The (UCLA team) staff had open arms for me and the athletic therapist as well. I was out there running the UCLA bleachers with the head coach between 5 a.m. and 5:15 a.m. He was pushing me, I was pushing him. A lot of people came out and ran stairs with me … my brother came out, John Johnson, my barber even came out. Article content 'It was dope for that energy. An amazing feeling just to be surrounded by love, by energy, by support, a lot of people had a hand in me getting back to this point right now. I'm very thankful for the people who support me and surround me and just want me to be me forever.' Article content Pickett says he feels 'great' now and that, once again, all football activities are like 'second nature' to him. Article content 'The first question I asked my physical therapist when I went back home was, 'how fast can I be back?'' he said. 'I told him I need to be back by training camp so I can practice. I said, can we make it happen? He was like, 'if you work like I know you will. I'm pretty sure we can.' Article content Article content 'I had gotten up to, I think, like 225 pounds from being hurt when I couldn't do anything. Worked myself all the way down to 2012, so I lost 13 pounds over six to eight weeks. I was working out like, two, three, sometimes four times a day, making sure I'm ready for my team. And it meant a lot to me to be back here for them.' Article content It meant a lot to the Redblacks, too. Article content Without Pickett and safety Alonzo Addae, whose season was cut short by injury after 14 games, the Redblacks' defence was picked apart by Toronto Argos quarterback Chad Kelly in the 58-38 East Division semifinal loss. Article content Addae, like Pickett, also was making his return to the roster against the Roughriders. Article content Article content Along with their talents, both brought back with them an attitude element that should aid the new defensive coordinator, William Fields, and the new defensive backs coach, Myron Lewis, both of whom were on the Argos staff last year. Article content 'Confidence is a huge thing,' head coach Bob Dyce said. 'And when you have strong personalities like both those young men have, it bleeds off onto the other guys. So we're extremely excited to have them both back there.

Minus most starters, Ottawa Redblacks fall to Montreal Alouettes in CFL pre-season finale

For much of the Ottawa Redblacks' pre-season finale at TD Place, it looked like the highlight of the night would stand as the lightning storm — which included high winds and toonie-sized hail pellets — that delayed the start of the game by almost an hour. Article content Article content The excitement meter spiked a couple of times, but all in all, followers of the CFL in Ottawa have to be happy the regular season kicks off with the Redblacks' visit to Saskatchewan on Thursday for a game against the Roughriders. Article content Article content The Redblacks sat most starters to take a look at players on the bubble, and the results were predictable in a sloppy 24-16 loss to the Montreal Alouettes on Friday night. Article content Article content Former Redblacks quarterback Caleb Evans had an easy time moving the ball against his old team in one quarter's work, completing eight of 11 pass attempts for 111 yards, and running for a touchdown. Article content Montreal's 17-7 halftime lead included a scoreless second quarter. Article content Ottawa's most prolific offensive player was Tyrie Adams, who is trying to win a backup job behind starting quarterback Dru Brown. Article content Adams scored on a nine-yard run with just under nine minutes left in the fourth quarter to pull the Redblacks within eight points. Article content Adams orchestrated a last-minute drive that stalled on the Montreal 45. Article content The Redblacks created some excitement in the third quarter when Dustin Crum directed a drive that included a 38-yard pass to running back Elijah Collins, who also distinguished himself on the night. Article content Article content But the Redblacks drew the ire of the fans when, on a third and goal from the three, they elected to settle for a 10-yard field goal that pulled Ottawa to within one score. Article content With Brown not dressed, Matt Shiltz started the game and played one quarter, completing two of two passes for 32 yards — including a 31-yarder to Andre Miller. Article content Crum completed eight of 13 pass attempts for 96 yards. Article content Former Toronto Argonaut Daniel Adeboboye was effective as the starting running back, carrying the ball four times for 24 yards. Article content Returning American linebacker Frankie Griffin was a demon on Redblacks' special teams with three first-half tackles. Article content American receiver Ayir Asante didn't do his chances of making the team any favours when he fumbled the Alouettes' first punt of the game, giving the visitors the ball on the Ottawa 34-yard line. Article content Ending the touchdown drive with a key pass knockdown was defensive lineman Daniel Okpoko, a Redblacks second-round pick year, but Montreal did manage a 24-yard field goal from Joshua Hutley off the Asante gaffe.
