Animation All-Stars Pendleton Ward, Rebecca Sugar, Ian Jones-Quartey, Patrick McHale Unite For One-Of-A-Kind Adult Swim Special (EXCLUSIVE)

An all-star team of animation legends took the stage today in Annecy, as part of Adult Swim's first dedicated Studio Focus at what has become the biggest animation event in the world. Celebrated for shaping some of the most beloved and groundbreaking animated series of our time, a powerhouse collection of creators including Pendleton Ward ('Adventure Time'), Rebecca Sugar ('Steven Universe'), Ian Jones-Quartey ('OK K.O.!'), Patrick McHale ('Over the Garden Wall') is reuniting for a one-of-a-kind animated special so mysterious, even they don't know what it's about. Animation, DC Studios 'The Fans Are More Intense Than Ever': Matt Groening, David Silverman and Matt Selman on 'The Simpsons' Enduring Appeal Adult Swim's 'The Elephant,' introduced by Adult Swim President Michael Ouweleen and this team, is an animated special where three animation teams are each responsible for one of three acts, without any knowledge of what the others are making. With Sugar and Jones-Quartey working as a duo and McHale and Ward overseeing their own separate parts, The Elephant is guided by 'game masters' and 'Adventure Time' veterans Jack Pendarvis and Kent Osborne, for a storytelling experiment that unfolds as a collaborative surprise, ultimately merging into a single, unexpected narrative. Along with this unique animated experiment, Adult Swim unveiled a behind-the-scenes documentary that showed the directors' unconventional situation. Coming to Adult Swim and produced by independent award-winning production company Titmouse,'The Elephant' promises to be a truly original experience, not only for audiences, but also for the acclaimed and talented creators themselves. One that had Annecy's audience most definitely on board. But this formidable gathering of animation talents in a new format wasn't the only thing fans cheered on during the news-packed presentation. After many rumors, Adult Swim announced the official renewal of high-octane and fan-favorite anime 'Ninja Kamui' for not one but two additional seasons. A breakout hit during its debut on Adult Swim's anime/action block Toonami, the series also earned critical acclaim amongst the anime fandom, winning 'Best Original Anime' at the 2025 Crunchyroll Anime Awards, which took place earlier this year in Tokyo. The forthcoming season of 'Ninja Kamui,' currently in production, will follow a new conspiracy of cataclysmic proportions. 'Ninja Kamui' is helmed for Adult Swim by Japanese production company Sola Entertainment. Adult Swim completed this animated candy-filled studio focus with more information about the latest 'Smalls' the network's incubator for emerging artists and nurtured talents under the supervision of 'Smalls' Creative Director / Executive Producer Dave Hughes. It is from this rich environment that emerged 'Ha Ha You Clowns,' a 'Smalls' project soon to be turned into a full-blown animated series by creator Joe Cappa. Adult Swim announced the news last year at this very festival, along with another 'Smalls' adaptation into series format, 'Oh My God, Yes!,' and the renewal of the beloved 'Smiling Friends' series for a third season. Almost exactly a year after this announcement, 'Ha Ha You Clowns' was presented by Cappa at Annecy in an exclusive first look. The series' surreal comedy that was found in the 'Smalls' shorts remains as moving and sensitive in this new format, as the audience follows a group of deep-voiced, musclebound father-bros who are actually sensitive, well-educated and articulate sweethearts who would do anything for one another. Prime Video Developing STEVEN UNIVERSE Spinoff LARS OF THE STARS

Steven Universe, one of the most beloved, highest rated animated series of all-time, said goodbye in early 2019. Later that year Steven Universe: The Movie arrived. But after the limited-run Steven Universe Future ended in 2020, it seemed like that might truly be the franchise's onscreen end. Turns out, thankfully for fans, it wasn't. It's officially getting ready to return to airwaves once again. Cartoon Network Studios has announced its developing a spinoff series, Steven Universe: Lars of the Stars, for Prime Video. Warner Bros. Animation, Cartoon Network Studios, and Hanna-Barbera Studios Europe made a huge announcement during its Studio Showcase presentation at this year's Annecy International Animation Film Festival. Cartoon Network Studios revealed it is currently developing what it calls a 'follow-up' to the beloved series. Only, this new show will instead follow a different character from the original show, Lars Barriga. A different main character isn't the only major change. Unlike the original series, which aired on Cartoon Network for five seasons and 160 episodes, Steven Universe: Lars of the Stars is heading to Prime Video. It will also give viewers a chance to go both backwards and forwards through its own universe. Here's the show's official synopsis: From executive producers Rebecca Sugar and Ian Jones-Quartey, Steven Universe: Lars of the Stars explores the past, present and future of the Steven Universe universe. The sequel series follows Lars Barriga, eternal teenager and space outlaw, as he and his pirate crew smuggle contraband, evade the authorities, and uncover the darkest secrets of the fallen Gem Empire. This sequel/spinoff wasn't the only big news announced during the presentation. Cartoon Network also revealed Teen Titans Go! is a go for season 10. That's a really good day for animation fans for very different reasons. One of those show's we expected to return. The other we weren't sure we'd ever see again. But it's just hard to keep a good (Steven) universe down.

There's a Steven Universe sequel series in the works at Prime Video

It's been five years since the Steven Universe saga ended, via a final season and movie that took the story into the future. Now, it's coming back, according to a report by Deadline . Prime Video is working on a sequel series, with franchise creator Rebecca Sugar in tow as an executive producer (and hopefully as a songwriter.) This doesn't look to be a straight sequel series, in that the focus is shifting away from Steven, the Crystal Gems and Beach City. Instead, the tentatively-titled Steven Universe: Lars of the Stars will follow punk rock slacker Lars Barriga and his ragtag band of space pirates. Spoiler time: Just about every character got a cool arc in the main series, but Lars was one of the standouts. He started as a selfish jerk stuck at a dead-end job, but finished the show as the captain of an actual starship trying to make a difference in the universe. Deadline says the new episodes will follow the "space outlaw as he and his pirate crew smuggle contraband, evade the authorities and uncover the darkest secrets of the fallen Gem Empire." So this looks to be a series that will largely take place in space, exploring the fallout of the final episodes of the main show. We don't know which, if any, of Steven Universe's main characters will show up or in what capacity. To view this content, you'll need to update your privacy settings. She went on to say that she misses "my world and my characters" and that she "can't wait to share [the sequel] with you and can't thank you enough for all your support." Sugar's long-time production partner, Ian Jones-Quartey, is also involved. We don't have a release date for this, which gives you plenty of time to catch up on the OG show and the movie. There are 160 episodes, so buckle up. Once that's done, there are several affiliated video games to dig into .
