TIA Celebrates Announcement Of Tourism Growth Roadmap And Is Ready To Get Going

Press Release – Tourism Industry Aotearoa Tourism Industry Aotearoa has welcomed the Government's announcement of the Tourism Growth Roadmap. 'We are thrilled to have a plan in place to support the tourism industry to grow its significant contribution to our economy, and help our industry to thrive,' says Rebecca Ingram, Chief Executive Tourism Industry Aotearoa (TIA). Ms Ingram notes the alignment of the seven announced workstreams within the Roadmap to the key actions identified in TIA's industry strategy Tourism 2050 – a Blueprint for Impact. 'The industry developed strategy launched in November 2023 and has formed the foundation of thinking and advocacy since. 'The Roadmap announced yesterday is a significant step forward and we look forward to working with government and government agencies to get stuck into the detail behind the workstreams and get this work underway. Included in the announcement made by the Minister of Tourism and Hospitality in her opening address at MEETINGS 2025 in Auckland last night, was details of additional funding to attract overseas visitors. 'As part of the $35 million announced to deliver the Roadmap this year, it was great to see not only funding for international marketing, but also $3m to attract business events and $5m towards the Major Events fund. 'We know that events are a key stimulus to drive arrivals through traditionally quieter periods – this funding will help to attract highly valued visitors and will be music to the ears of many in the industry. Major and mega events are not easy to secure and this boost of funding will make a difference.' TIA looks forward to working with government on the workstreams over the coming months. With a forward-looking focus to 2030, the theme will dive into what it means to be agile, sustainable, and competitive in an ever-evolving global marketplace. 'Each year Tourism Summit Aotearoa gives us the opportunity to bring the industry together with global speakers and thought leaders, presenting new and thought-provoking ideas to help us build our collective capabilities,' says Rebecca Ingram, Chief Executive Tourism Industry Aotearoa. 'We are passionate about empowering the industry to thrive. This year's theme will help us to think beyond our borders and learn from other countries and industries to evolve and grow our industry and its contributions to New Zealand.' Widely regarded as tourism's must-attend thought leadership event, Tourism Summit Aotearoa is a key event on the annual tourism calendar, bringing together more than 300 people from across our industry. Tourism Industry Aotearoa's Chief Executive Rebecca Ingram, says that today's announcement on the future of the Milford Opportunities Project will be a relief for many, providing long-awaited direction for the industry and the region. In a joint announcement, Minister of Conservation, Hon Potaka, and Minister of Tourism and Hospitality, Hon Upston, outlined an investment of $15.2 million to upgrade infrastructure and enhance conservation at Milford Sound Piopiotahi to sustainably grow tourism while protecting the local region and its important conservation. 'Today's announcement addresses long standing uncertainty for the industry, especially for the aviation community and cruise industry and provides direction for those wishing to invest in the region,' says Ms Rebecca Ingram. 'There are a lot of things that the industry can agree on when it comes to Milford and improving the experience and safety are two of them. We have been strong advocates for a well-managed experience that is great for visitors, community, business and for the environment.' Ms Ingram said that since the project commenced in 2017, some contentious matters have needed to be considered, and the project has gone through numerous iterations. 'We look forward to working with the Department of Conservation as the proposal goes from plan into action. Over the coming days we will fully review the details and will promptly get in touch with our members to understand their views.'
