India vs England 2025 1st Test, Leeds Weather forecast: Overcast skies and showers could favour bowlers at Headingley

Rain could hamper proceedings at Headingley in the 1st Test(X) New Delhi: With Shubman Gill set to lead India in his first Test as a captain, the weather might end up being a significant factor that will dictate the way this new era begins. The first Test of the five-match series between India and England begins on Friday in Leeds, however the weather forecast indicates partly cloudy skies and chances of rain all through the weekend, which can play havoc on the progress of the match. According to AccuWeather, on the 2nd and 3rd days, there is a possibility of receiving some showers in the afternoons, and on the 4th day the sky will probably open in the evening with light rain. Even though Day 1 and Day 5 should be predominantly dry, the continuous cloud cover and humidity in the air are likely to facilitate pace bowlers and test the technique and focus of batters. Interestingly, day 1 could present a sunny streak to Leeds, but with very little interference of clouds. Under these circumstances, India might be lured to field four seamers, which is very appropriate given the weather conditions. It may all boil down to whether Ravindra Jadeja has utility and batting depth, whether Kuldeep Yadav would add a threat with his wrist-spin, and whether Washington Sundar is of dual value with the bat and the ball. Overhead and surface conditions may be the terms to call rather than pre-series planning. A number of Indian players will walk into the series with confidence owing to their recent stints in counties. Shubman Gill played a memorable inning in his stint with Glamorgan in 2022, in which he scored 244 runs in only four innings at an average of 61.00, including a classy 119. Probable middle order mainstay Karun Nair too had a fantastic stint with Northamptonshire, scoring 736 runs in 14innings at an analusys of 56.61 Sai Sudharsan as well enjoyed good exposure with Surrey having made 281 runs in two seasons. An experience by Arshdeep Singh (13 wickets) with Kent and Sundar (8 wickets and a five-wicket haul) playing Lancashire might help them adapt to the dynamics of English pitches rather fast. When Gill takes a rejuvenated Indian team into a series where the fortunes can change on an hourly basis, the challenge will not be against England, but the very English summer itself.

Kuldeep Yadav expects help for spinners from pitch during IND vs ENG series

As India gear up for their five-match Test series against England starting June 20, Kuldeep Yadav is hopeful that conditions will favour spin as the series progresses. With R. Ashwin now retired from Test cricket, Kuldeep steps in as India's only specialist spinner alongside all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja. Though he has limited experience in English Tests—having bowled just nine overs in his lone appearance—Kuldeep believes the surfaces will provide opportunities for spinners later in the matches. Observing the intra-squad warm-up match, he noted how the pitch evolved from helping seamers early on to offering turn by the third day, raising his expectations for the series. Growing in Ashwin's Absence, Guided by Jadeja Kuldeep admitted that Ashwin's retirement has been deeply felt in the dressing room, but it has also allowed him to build a closer working relationship with Ravindra Jadeja. The duo have been spending more time together on and off the field. Kuldeep shared that they regularly exchange thoughts on tactics, field placements, and strategies for specific opposition batters. Having two seasoned spinners in the side was once a comfort, but now the left-arm wrist-spinner is adapting to a more prominent role with Jadeja as his mentor. Intra-Squad Game Offers Valuable Preparation India are facing India A in their only red-ball warm-up game before the series. Kuldeep stressed the significance of bowling volume ahead of a long Test series, especially after months of T20 cricket. He said fast bowlers are expected to deliver 15–20 overs in preparation, and spinners too benefit from extended spells to regain rhythm and confidence. Despite the unpredictability of English conditions, Kuldeep remains optimistic. If the sun stays out and pitches wear down, he believes spinners can play a decisive role. New Skipper Impresses with Calm and Clarity Kuldeep also offered praise for new Test captain Shubman Gill. Describing him as composed and highly motivated, he noted that Gill seems ready for the leadership challenge. Having closely observed experienced captains like Rohit Sharma, Gill appears to have absorbed key lessons. Kuldeep said the youngster's focus on maintaining team spirit and clarity in decision-making bodes well for the demanding tour ahead.

‘We got a learning from BGT': Aakash Chopra warns India against all-rounder obsession in England Test series

Shubman Gill's new-look India Test side has received a word of caution from former opener Aakash Chopra, stressing that they should not walk down the wrong path and learn from the mistakes made during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy at the end of the 2024-25 season. India's reliance on three seamers and a fourth pace option in all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy did not bring the necessary result Down Under, as the hosts secured the World Test Championship final berth with a 3-1 series victory. With a new World Test Championship cycle kicking off for India at the start of the five-match England series, Gill and Co. will confront a similar challenge in the absence of senior pacer Mohammed Shami and seam spearhead Jasprit Bumrah expected to not feature in more than three matches after his injury setback following the last Australia tour. Chopra said that India's wavering balance between the batting and bowling departments could mean that they may lean in on 'bits and pieces' players that may disrupt the general combination. 'We got a learning from the Border-Gavaskar Trophy that if you get a little obsessed about the batting and play batters who can bowl and choose bowlers who can bat, then you are just going down the wrong path,' Chopra said on his YouTube channel. Chopra said that India will need to play at least four seam options, with Nitish Reddy coming in as the potential fifth seamer and spin all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja playing as the sole tweaker. 'So I am thinking you should have a minimum of three proper fast bowlers. The fourth fast bowler could be Shardul Thakur for sure, if you wish, and then you can have Nitish Kumar Reddy as the fifth bowler and Ravindra Jadeja as the sixth bowler. So you have plenty of bowling options, but the batting is not compromised,' Chopra said. Chopra also said there might be the temptation for India to firm up their batting stocks by placing Karun Nair at number six, making it a toss-up between Shardul and Nitish for the fourth-seam option. 'Otherwise, you can go the route of keeping Karun Nair at No. 6, Ravindra Jadeja at No. 7, and then go with four fast bowlers. That could be another thought process where Shardul Thakur won't be among the four fast bowlers, and you go with four proper fast bowlers,' he added. 'It will be worth watching how this era proceeds in Shubman Gill's captaincy, because when you have even slightly less experience in batting, you are tempted to play an additional batter since enough runs aren't being scored. The Headingley match will decide what our thought process will be,' Chopra observed. India's last series win in England came 18 years ago when a Rahul Dravid-led unit pipped the hosts 1-0 in the inaugural Pataudi Trophy, now replaced by the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy this year.
