KUALA LUMPUR: Soh Wai Ching's remarkable rise from humble beginnings to world champion has become the driving force behind Malaysia's climb up the global tower running in large part to his exploits, Malaysia now sit fifth in the world according to the Tower Running World Association - an impressive feat for a sport still considered niche locally. "Wai Ching is a symbol of what's possible when talent meets tenacity," said Malaysian Tower Running Association (MTRA) president Ravinder Singh on the latest episode of the Timesport: On the Beat podcast. Ghaziabad: Man gunned down by bikers outside police station
Ghaziabad An argument between two groups over halting a car on a main road near Rawli around 7.30pm on Wednesday snowballed into a major fight and culminated in the murder of a 32-year-old man at the entrance of the Muradnagar police station around 11.45pm on the same day, police said. The family of the victim, Ravi Sharma, alleged that police took no action when the accused, identified as Monty Chaudhary and Ajay Chaudhary, fired at least four to five shots outside the police station. Subsequently, three police officers were suspended on Thursday and an FIR under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita sections 103(1) (murder) and 3(5) (acts done with common intention) was filed. The Muradnagar police station is located on the Delhi-Meerut Road. 'It was around 11.45pm when the two suspects arrived on a bike on the opposite side of the road and fired several shots outside the police station. They soon fled on their bike. One of the shots hit Ravi Sharma and killed him. We have formed five teams to trace the two suspects, and an FIR has been registered against them,' Surendra Nath Tiwary, DCP of the rural zone, said. The events started at around 7.30pm, when Ravinder Sharma, Bharatiya Kisan Union's national vice-president, and his son Arun Sharma were returning to their home in Milak Rawli village in Muradnagar. Upon spotting their two nieces getting off an autorickshaw, Ravinder halted the car and asked them to board the car. During the conversation, the suspects—who also reside in the same village as the victim's family—were driving down the opposite side and objected to Ravinder halting the car. 'They had a heated exchange over the passage of their cars, after which Ravinder returned home. Around 8.30pm, the two suspects went on a bike to Ravinder's house and fired two shots at the main gate. Ravinder called the police, who could not find the accused at their residence. Ravinder was asked to visit the police station to file a complaint,' DCP Tiwary said. Ravinder visited the police station along with his eldest son Ravi Sharma, the victim, and a few other relatives around 11pm. When they were waiting outside, Ravinder said the two suspects came on a bike and fired at them, killing Ravi. 'During the firing outside the police station, four policemen were standing near us, but none of them opened retaliatory fire, even though we insisted. They just started preparing videos of the incident as soon as the first shot was fired. We rushed my injured son (Ravi Sharma) to a nearby hospital, where he was declared dead. We kept his body outside the police station on Thursday morning, demanding their police encounter and security for my family,' Ravinder said. Police said the group held a demonstration with the body of the deceased on Thursday morning, but traffic movement on the Delhi-Meerut Road was not affected. Following the incident, senior officials of the Ghaziabad Police Commissionerate on Thursday suspended the station house officer (SHO) of Muradnagar police station, a sub-inspector who was the night officer, and another sub-inspector, who is the beat police officer of the areas concerned, the police said in a statement. Police said that prime suspect Monty was released from jail last year after serving a sentence for raping a minor girl in 2015. The other accused, Ajay, does not have a criminal history, the DCP said. Sharma's family operates a business of pesticides and agricultural equipment at Rawli in Muradnagar.

Ghaziabad murder: Victim gave up his cricket dreams to support locals with modern farm tech, says father
1 2 Noida: Ravi Sharma once dreamt of becoming a cricketer. As a young boy growing up in Milak Rawali village, he practised his shots on dusty fields, his ambition rooted not in fame, but in passion. But by the time he completed his Class 11 exams, he put aside that dream to shoulder a more immediate responsibility — his family's future. On Wednesday night, that future was cut short when the 35-year-old was shot dead outside the Muradnagar police station, allegedly by two men involved in a road rage incident just hours earlier. His murder has left not only a grieving family, but an entire village shaken, with no visible police protection hours after the incident. Ravi's father Ravinder Sharma, the national vice-president of the Bhartiya Kisan Union (Bhanu), told TOI that his son's quiet determination had shaped his path. "He gave up cricket and turned to farming," he recalled. "He married 14 years ago and started Shambhunath Beej Bhandar, a seed and fertiliser business. Later, he went on to open another shop in Bhojpur. He learned modern farming techniques from YouTube and shared the knowledge with local farmers. " Known in the village as a responsible man who kept his family close and supported his two younger brothers, Ravi's commitment to agriculture made him a respected figure. His 13-year-old son was only told of his father's death during the cremation. "He asked me who killed his father and where the killer is," said Ravinder, his voice breaking. "We had no answer. Cops haven't helped. There's not even a constable in the village now." The family said they have been left to fend for themselves. No police response vehicle has been stationed in Milak Rawali, and not a single senior officer had visited. "After such a crime, there should have been police everywhere. But it's silence," Ravinder said. "Lagta hai Yogi ji ke bulldozer mein jung lag gaya hai." Anshul Kaushik, Ravi's brother-in-law, said they now fear the attackers—Monti Goyat and Ajay Chaudhary—may return. "They had planned to kill Ravi's father too." According to cops, Monti came out of jail last year after serving a nine-year term for raping a minor girl. Police commissioner J Ravinder Goud said efforts were underway to arrest the accused, and a force had also been sent to the village.

Two die from electrocution as strong winds, rain lash the national capital
Two men died from electrocution on Sunday morning in south-west Delhi's R.K. Puram Sector 1 after a tree, uprooted by rain and strong winds, collapsed onto an overhead power line, the police said. The deceased, Ravinder, 30, and Bharat, 25, who worked at a roadside food kiosk and were natives of Madhubani, Bihar, were sleeping outside the outlet when the incident occurred. A stray dog also died from the electric shock. The police received a PCR call about the incident around 4.30 a.m. A large tree had fallen due to the storm, snapping a live power line. The current passed through the wet ground on which the two were resting. Fire brigade, BSES, and police teams rushed to the scene and took the victims to the AIIMS Trauma Centre, where they were declared dead on arrival, said a senior officer. An official comment from the BSES was awaited at the time of going to press. Sunil Kumar, the kiosk owner and eyewitness to the tragedy, blamed the Delhi government's Power Department for the loss of lives. 'We had raised several complaints about the dangling wires. A storm hit, the tree fell, the wires snapped, and two lives were lost. We were all sleeping on the footpath last night,' he said. Senior Aam Aadmi Party leader Somnath Bharti attacked the Delhi government over the deaths. He also raised concerns about a cell phone tower falling in Safdarjung Enclave. 'It's sheer luck the mobile tower did not fall on anyone's house,' he said. When reached for comment, the Delhi government did not respond. The storm also brought relief from the severe heatwave. The Safdarjung weather station recorded 42 mm of rain. It recorded the maximum temperature at 35.6 degrees Celsius, 3.2 degrees below normal, and the minimum at 20 degrees Celsius, 7.5 degrees below the normal for this time of the year. The India Meteorological Department has issued a 'yellow alert', urging residents to stay indoors due to the likelihood of thunderstorms and strong winds over the next three days.
