RM3.6mil spent on heritage complex upgrade, promotion

Visitors can appreciate deeper cultural experience in Johor after a series of high-impact upgrades and tourism initiatives totalling RM3.6mil were rolled out at the Sultan Abu Bakar Heritage Complex (KWSAB). State unity, heritage and culture committee chairman K. Raven Kumar (BN-Tenggaroh) said this was part of the state government's Visit Johor 2026 plans to establish KWSAB as a cultural hub to promote its history, heritage and culture. 'The package features four main attractions, namely the traditional Rumah Limas Johor, Johor Art Gallery, Johor Weaving Gallery and Rumah Zapin Johor.' He said visitors could immerse themselves in Johor's traditions at these distinctive cultural stops. 'At Rumah Limas Johor, guests are introduced to the philosophy and architectural layouts of traditional Malay houses. 'These are complemented by traditional games, authentic cuisine and fittings of traditional Malay attire. 'Johor Art Gallery showcases children's artworks alongside interactive tie-dye and graffiti workshops while at Johor Weaving Gallery, once a royal residence, visitors can admire intricate Johor textiles and watch the delicate weaving process. 'Rumah Zapin Johor allows visitors to explore 15 styles of the state's iconic Zapin dance and even learn its five core steps,' he said during the Johor state assembly sitting at Bangunan Sultan Ismail in Kota Iskandar. He was responding to a question from Mohd Yusla Ismail (BN-Senggarang) about the promotional and improvement measures planned for KWSAB. Raven Kumar also highlighted Yayasan Warisan Johor's bilingual social media efforts to strengthen KWSAB's digital presence. He said social media videos had attracted visitors to explore KWSAB. 'We have also enhanced the visibility of Johor's heritage through digital tourism platforms,' he said. 'The development works at KWSAB includes new disabled-friendly pathways, upgraded toilets and surau, revamped signage and enhanced public amenities such as souvenir shops, a culinary gallery and a modernised ticketing system.' ― By YEE XIANG YUN and RHEMA SENG

Chefs set new world record for longest line of tarts in Johor

JOHOR BARU: A seven-year-old Guinness World Record (GWR) has been broken by 115 World Chefs Championships participants for the longest line of tarts. The chefs, coming from 16 countries including from Malaysia, beat the record made in Hong Kong on Dec 9, 2018, by making fruit tarts during the event held at the Persada International Convention Centre here on Thursday (May 29). The group successfully made 4,399 pieces of fruit tarts with a total length of 221.63m to beat the previous record of 2,333 tarts or 186.64m. GWR adjudicator Sonia Ushirogochi declared the attempt a success, much to the delight of the jubilant group of chefs who contributed their efforts to make it into the records book. This is the third time that the event made its way into the GWR as last year, they cooked the largest Johor style fried noodle while in 2023, they set a new world record for the largest serving of char koay teow. Meanwhile, state unity, culture and heritage committee chairman K. Raven Kumar, who represented Johor Mentri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi during the event opening, said this was the third time the World Chefs Championship was held here. 'Organising the World Chefs Championship in Johor is the best opportunity for us to boost the gastronomy tourism sector to a much higher level. 'The competition can also increase the standard among local culinary and exchange ideas with their counterparts coming from all over the world,' he added. Raven said this year's competition saw a total number of 2,128 chefs, including Malaysians, competing with other chefs coming from 17 countries such as Singapore, United States, Australia, China, Taiwan and many others.

School move approved due to low enrolment

Compiled by C. ARUNO, JUNAID IBRAHIM and R. ARAVINTHAN SJK(T) Ladang Sembrong in Layang-Layang, Johor, will be moved to a more populated location, Makkal Osai reported. The school, which is located in Ladang Sembrong, has only 11 pupils. None of them are from the plantation but they live in residential areas nearby. State executive councillor K. Raven Kumar, who is also Tenggaroh assemblyman, announced the state government's approval for the move. With the growing Indian population in Taman Impian Emas and Taman Universiti, the community has been asking for a Tamil school in the area. Johor Mentri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi had promised to allocate six acres of land each for two Tamil schools. Raven Kumar said federal funding will be sought through Pulai MP Suhaizan Kaiat, with the new school expected to accommodate 1,000 students. The above articles are compiled from the vernacular newspapers (Bahasa Malaysia, Chinese and Tamil dailies). As such, stories are grouped according to the respective language/medium.
