Royals rookie John Rave honors late dad on first Father's Day as MLB player

Royals rookie John Rave honors late dad on first Father's Day as MLB player Show Caption Hide Caption Seattle Mariners' newest player shares promotion with family Cole Young announces his move to the big leagues playing for Seattle Mariners during an emotional phone call with his family. Kansas City Royals rookie outfielder John Rave stands at attention during the national anthem played before each game, but he's quietly having a private conversation to the loved one no one can see. When Rave leaves the on-deck circle to hit, he draws a cross in the dirt with his spikes in the corner of the batter's box. He steps back, touches his forehead, then his heart, and his shoulders from left to right. He glances towards the left-field foul pole, then a brief prayer, and says, 'Let's go." Rave, 27, does this every single game, and will do so again Sunday afternoon against the Athletics at Kauffman Stadium. Only this time, it will be much more emotional. You see, today is Father's Day. This is Rave's first Father's Day as a Major League baseball player. It will also be his first Father's Day as a major leaguer without his father. 'I can't begin to tell you how much I miss him," Rave says. 'I think of him every single day, every time I put on my uniform, every time I step to the plate. He meant everything to me. 'He was my biggest fan." Mike Rave was John's coach growing up. He and his wife, Sue, were the ones who were always at his games growing up, from T-ball to Little League to Central Catholic High School in Bloomington, Illinois, to Illinois State. They were there, of course, when he was selected in the fifth round of the 2019 draft by the Royals. Mike Rave, who spend his entire career as a proud insurance agent for State Farm, passed away less than a year later on Feb. 18, 2020. He was feeling ill at work, went home, fell down a flight of stairs, died from internal bleeding. John, who had just arrived into town a night earlier for a quick visit before returning to the Royals' complex in Surprise, Arizona, never got a chance to say good-bye. 'It still hurts, it always will," Rave says. 'We would talk after all every game. He always believed I could make it. He always gave me that confidence. Now, not to share this with him, it hurts.'' Rave wasn't even sure he wanted to keep playing baseball after his father passed, and certainly wasn't ready to immediately report to the Royals' minor-league camp. His big brother, Matt, assured him that he needed to leave. It was natural to grieve, but he couldn't discard his dreams. 'He didn't want to go back right away," says Matt Rave, 30, a commodity broker in the Bloomington, Illinois area. 'I told him, 'You have to go play ball. That's what you need to do. This is what Dad would want.'" Rave went back to the Royals' camp, kept grinding through the minor leagues for seven years, and two weeks before the callup of his buddy, prized outfield prospect Jac Caglianone, got the call he waited his whole life for. He was going to the big leagues. The trouble was letting everyone know. He called his wife, Amy, but the cell phone reception was so spotty she wasn't sure what was happening. 'It was probably the weirdest call-up ever," says Amy. 'I knew the game was starting, and I knew he wasn't playing, but I was confused why he was calling me. I'm in the middle of nowhere and he says he's going to Kansa City, but wasn't sure he was going to be activated. I didn't even know what he meant." He twice called his mom, Sue, but she was having lunch with friends and never picked up. She finally called back, but the service was so bad, she didn't know what was happening until calling Amy. 'I was so excited, I couldn't even function," Sue Rave says. 'I left my friends, gave them money, and headed home to pack. I kept saying, 'Oh my God, my son made it. My kid is a big-leaguer. That's John Rave. I'm his mother. I'm the mother of a major-league baseball player.' It's so surreal." There were calls to his big brother, Matt, and his sister, Sarah, 31. The next thing they all knew, they were driving six hours to Kansas City, renting an Airbnb, sitting in a suite at Kauffman Stadium, and screaming and hugging when Rave got his first hit on a bunt against the Cincinnati Reds. Only for the call to be painfully overturned. The first hit became only a sacrifice bunt. It wasn't until two days later when he made sure his first hit couldn't be overturned with a double to right field off ace Hunter Greene. 'Mike would have just been over the moon to see this," says Sue, who was married 23 years to Mike. 'When John got called up, Mike probably would have taken out a billboard to let everyone know. It's so sad he's not here, but he is here. We feel him.'' John feels his presence too, and constantly finds himself talking to him, whether it's in the dugout, standing in the outfield, or in the batter's box. When he hits a home run, he'll point to the sky looking up to his dad, pump his fist, as if his Mike could feel the strength of those knuckles. 'It's almost like a sense of calmness talking to him," says Rave, who's hitting .240 with a .606 OPS as the Royals' speedy reserve outfielder. 'I know my dad's still here. He's watching. He's got the best seat in the house. I know he's there every game with me. 'And I know he always will be." Father's Day, and every day. Follow Nightengale on X: @Bnightengale

Who Said Vacuums Can't Be Cute?

Apr 19, 2025 10:09 AM Worx's petite cube vacuum appeals to my desire for cleanliness, control, and cute things in my life. Photograph: Rave; Getty Images If you buy something using links in our stories, we may earn a commission. Learn more. I might be a mom, but I've become one hell of a dad with my new hobby: vacuuming the cars every weekend. My adorable, Cheerio-throwing toddler drives me to the end of my rope each week after seeing the state our cars end up in. Our vehicles descend into a madness of half-eaten snacks, piles of sand (there's somehow always sand), a toy graveyard, and random trash by every Saturday morning, if not Tuesday afternoon. I can't let it stand. Nothing chases away my Sunday scaries like getting our cars spick-and-span on the inside, leaving me excited for that Monday-morning day-care drive with a clean car. So it's no surprise I have a handful of vacuums I've tried in my never-ending quest to keep our cars somewhat clean. I've used a stick vacuum base, a handheld vac, and even tiny vacuums that are meant for countertop messes. But the cutest one of all is easy to name: the Worx Cordless Cube Vacuum. Does a vacuum need to be cute? Of course not. But being able to get my car clean (already something that brings me joy) with an item I find visually pleasing and adorably small scratches my brain in the best kind of way. Photograph: Nena Farrell Worx 20V Cordless Cube Vac Ready to Roll This little vacuum is made for on-the-go cleaning. The handle has the power button on it, so you can easily turn it off or switch the power level while holding it. This makes it convenient to spot clean or move around to the other side of the car without having to pause. Literally handy. Also handy? The two included attachments have storage compartments inside the vacuum's body, so you can easily switch around what tool you're using or store it away without needing to leave wherever you're vacuuming. For such a small vacuum, it's doing the work of larger vacuums that double as storage for their own accessories. It doesn't have a massive dustbin, though the 7-ounce capacity is similar to the Dyson Humdinger ($250), our favorite handheld vacuum. I found it to be plenty of space as I vacuumed up the entirety of my four-seater sedan—trunk and carseat included—though it likely wouldn't be enough space if you were cleaning something more intense than a dirty car. The Worx should get about 10 minutes on the high-speed setting and about 25 minutes on the low-speed setting. I usually vacuum on the low speed, though I rarely run the vacuum for more than 10 consecutive minutes. This little cube is also plenty small enough to stash anywhere in your garage or hall closet without being a burden. I'm stashing mine on the tool shelf in our garage. The battery clips on and off and looks like the base for a drill, and it comes with a little charging base to charge it. You should charge it after use since it's so small, unless you're certain you vacuum your car in a handful of minutes. The battery isn't designed for extreme weather, so while I could throw it in my trunk during spring here in sunny San Diego, it's best used at a normal room (or garage) temperature. Fun Size Small things bring me joy, and I don't think I'm alone in feeling that way. There are articles and videos and Reddit threads dedicated to exploring why we love miniature items. While this cube vacuum isn't so small that it could be a dollhouse vacuum, the petite take on what could have been a massive shop vacuum still satisfies that part of my brain that wants things around me to be cute and small. Much in the way tiny things make our brains feel in control and organized, vacuuming my car brings me that sense of satisfaction and power over one of the messy aspects of my life. Getting to do it with a fun little tool only adds to the serotonin boost of what would otherwise feel like a monotonous task. It also offers some of the escapism my little Lego sets once offered me, though instead of a made-up universe, it's a life where everything is as clean and organized as the vacuum lines in my car trunk. This little cube vacuum might not have the most accessories, the biggest dustbin, or the longest running time, but it's a nice in-between of all these features and a good size for the art of car vacuuming. Because for some of us, it is an art, or at least an escape from the cycle of messes that plague our lives.

Nassau County adds new layer of security as holidays approach

NASSAU COUNTY, N.Y. (PIX11) — Recent acts of violence at houses of worship underscore the need for stronger security measures. Nassau County recognized that and has done something about it by rolling out the latest security techniques. More Local News Just in time for the holidays, another layer of security you could have prayed for in Nassau County. This is the new house of worship desk located in the Office of Emergency Management. It employs new technology designed to increase safety and reduce response time to houses of worship throughout the county. It begins with a new app on a phone that starts the alert process. Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman and Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder demonstrated the system for reporters. A system that utilizes drones and surveillance cameras at hundreds of sites. 'These things are going to make our response times much quicker to any event that may occur,' said Blakeman. 'We now have the ability to send in the cavalry. That's incredibly important because time saves lives.' The Rave app, as it's called, has been installed in almost 2,000 locations, primarily in houses of worship. Drones are eyes in the sky that can scan from above, and cameras can probe below. More: Latest News from Around the Tri-State Commissioner Ryder showed images on a large screen, explaining, 'The drone is over the location, giving us eyes in the sky. We've activated cameras and are speaking to emergency services units, our homeland security, and our intel on the scene already. The house of worship desk is alerting everybody else in the community, telling them where to respond. We have eyes inside the synagogue, so we know if the shooter was in there.' Ryder also noted, 'The reality is, we are doing it and we are doing it better than anyone else.' With the holidays of Passover and Easter just days away, worshippers in Nassau County should take comfort knowing someone is looking over them right here at the house of worship desk, an added layer of security. East Texans encouraged to remain vigilance during upcoming serve weather

RUSK COUNTY, Texas (KETK)- With impeding bad weather coming to East Texas this week it is essential for residents to know when severe weather is heading their way. Oncor: All power restored in Tyler after transformer failure Rusk County Fire Marshal and Emergency Management Coordinator, Patrick Dooley wants to make sure all East Texans are being informed about impending severe weather. 'We want to make sure that we're doing everything we can to help push pertinent, timely information out there to them so they get that information,' Dooley said. However rural areas across East Texas counties staying informed during severe storms can look different. There can be spotty cell phone service and not all areas have tornado sirens. 'We've looked at them,' Dooley said. 'They're just very cost prohibitive right now.' Dooley said like most updates these days they get the word out to as many people as possible on social media. 'We use Facebook, twitter, Instagram,' Dooley said. Rusk also uses Rave/Smart 9-1-1 which is a notification system paid by the 'East Texas council of Government' that allows officials to share important messages and emergency alerts. 'You would have full access as far as emergency notifications, whether they be locally state or national,' Dooley said. Smith County is also using the same system currently. The way people can opt into this system is by going online to their counties website, but when the internet and service go down, they'll go back to the original form of communication. 'It uses a national weather service algorithm. and when the national weather service issues a weather statement, it triggers that alert and anyone signed up gets the alert,' Smith County emergency management coordinator Brandon Moore said. UT Tyler volleyball star signs professionally with Finland team Dooley emphasized the importance for everyone to do their own due diligence and stay weather aware. 'Listen to the weather, find different ways, whether it be, you know, the radio, tv, whatever it may be,' Dooley said. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
