Ready and staff in place, yet Nagpur district hospital awaits inauguration

Nagpur: The much-anticipated inauguration of the 100-bed district general hospital at Mankapur remains delayed, despite the facility being fully equipped and staffed. Originally slated for opening in June beginning, the hospital, which took 13 years to complete, missed multiple deadlines. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The final push for completion came after interventions by the high court and elected representatives. On Thursday, a visit by TOI revealed a fully functional administrative setup, with clinical staff present in their departments. Civil surgeon Dr ND Rathod confirmed that the hospital administration is operational, and outpatient and inpatient services are expected to commence soon. "We received the occupancy certificate recently and have informed higher authorities. The inauguration date is now their call," Dr Rathod said. The hospital includes a 40-bed eye hospital block, ready to operate alongside the main facility. Initially, limited services will be offered, including surgery, orthopaedics, medicine, ENT, psychiatry, paediatrics, and gynaecology on an OPD basis. Advanced diagnostic equipment, including CT and MRI machines, has been allocated, with a 4,000 sq ft space under construction to house them. Notably, the CT machine, originally sanctioned for Chimur hospital, and the MRI machine, meant for Gadchiroli, have been redirected to Nagpur due to space constraints at their intended locations. Out of the 108 sanctioned staff positions, most, including medical officers, specialists, and staff nurses, have already joined. Dr Rathod added that the hospital will provide comprehensive blood investigations and radiological services. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now A physiotherapy unit, funded through CSR initiatives, is also in the pipeline. The delay in the hospital's formal launch has raised concerns among residents, who have long awaited improved healthcare access in the region. With infrastructure, equipment, and staff in place, the state authorities should finalise the inauguration date and make this long-overdue project fully operational for the public, said residents.

DRI arrests Air India crew member for smuggling gold from US to India, mastermind too nabbed

The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has arrested an Air India crew member for allegedly working for a gold smuggling racket and smuggling gold from the United States to India. The DRI also arrested the mastermind of the racket and seized smuggled gold worth Rs 1.41 crore. Acting on specific information, DRI officials on Friday intercepted Girish Pimpale, 42, who had arrived from New York on flight AI-116, near the exit gate after he crossed the customs green channel at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport in Mumbai. On his examination, the DRI officials seized two pieces of paper on which handwritten calculations regarding the purchase of gold were found. This bolstered DRI's suspicion of Pimpale's involvement. Hence, he was subsequently placed under interrogation in which he reportedly admitted his role in the smuggling activity. He also showed a pouch containing 1373.2 grams of foreign-origin gold (worth Rs 1.41 crore) on the side of a sofa placed near the baggage services area in the international arrival hall of Mumbai International Airport, which was subsequently seized, sources have said. Pimpale's further investigation revealed that one Rakesh Rathod was supposed to receive smuggled gold from him, as he is the mastermind running the racket. Rathod was subsequently arrested on Saturday. Mastermind offered AI crew Rs 2 lakh on every 1 kg of smuggled gold Explaining how the racket was being operated, another source said that Rathod would ask Pimpale to buy gold in the US, make payment in cash, smuggle it to India and give it to him, as there is a huge profit margin. Since crew members are not examined, taking advantage of the same, Rathod decided to rope in Pimpale for the smuggling job. Probe has revealed that Rathod offered Pimpale Rs 2 lakh on every 1 kg of smuggled gold. He would also arrange cash in the US using some hawala channels for Pimpale to buy gold there. Recently, Rathod arranged USD 150,000 in the US for Pimpale to buy the gold for smuggling purposes, the source added. Further investigation has revealed that Rathod and Pimpale have known each other for the past year, and he allegedly accepted smuggled gold from Pimpale twice in the past. Rathod has a criminal past. He was previously booked by the customs in a gold smuggling case by Mumbai customs in 2020. The DRI officials are further investigating the matter and are trying to find out details of other members of the racket and also the source of funds used in purchasing the gold. Both the accused have been arrested under relevant sections of the Customs Act.

Gynaecologists share how to reduce risk of miscarriage in first trimester: Avoid alcohol and excessive caffeine

Gauahar Khan launched her podcast, MaaaNoranjan, and spoke about her experience with motherhood in the June 1 episode. The model-turned-actor, who is pregnant with her and husband Zaid Darbar's second child, got candid about her pregnancy journey with their first son Zehaan and shared a heartfelt revelation about suffering a miscarriage before his birth. Also read | Gauahar Khan breaks down as she recalls suffering miscarriage, calls out Suniel Shetty's 'comfort of C-section' comment In doing so, Gauahar Khan not only elucidated the need to break the taboo surrounding pregnancy loss but also highlighted the importance of awareness and support. In an interview with HT Lifestyle, doctors said that miscarriage is a relatively common experience for many women, and by acknowledging the prevalence of miscarriage, we can work towards creating a more supportive and understanding environment for those who have experienced pregnancy loss. Dr Sangita Gandhi, consultant, obstetrician and gynaecologist at Jupiter Hospital, Thane, said, 'First-trimester miscarriage is far more common than most people realise, occurring in about 10 to 20 per cent of known pregnancies.' Dr Sujata Rathod, consultant, obstetrician and gynaecologist, KIMS Hospitals, Thane agreed that 'first-trimester miscarriage demonstrates a reality that is experienced by most women, and even though miscarriage is normal during pregnancy, it is shrouded in silence and stigma'. Dr Rathod said, 'The first trimester has a short three-month period of acute change and development during the pregnancy and that is why miscarriage can occur during this transformation. Miscarriage may have factors associated with chromosomal abnormalities, levels of hormones, or other previous medical issues. Regardless of whether or not a miscarriage was averted, it is possible for women to persist with certain measures of pregnancy safety.' Dr Gandhi added, 'The most frequent cause is chromosomal abnormalities, which are random genetic errors that occur during fertilisation. These are usually beyond anyone's control and are not a reflection of the mother's health, lifestyle, or actions.' That said, several factors are within our reach that can support a healthy early pregnancy. Dr Gandhi said, 'A balanced diet, adequate hydration, and proper rest are vital. Avoiding tobacco, alcohol, recreational drugs, and even excessive caffeine can reduce the risk. Additionally, women with underlying conditions such as diabetes, thyroid disorders, or autoimmune diseases should seek preconception counselling and work closely with their healthcare provider to optimise health before and during pregnancy.' Dr Rathod said that women can lead a healthy lifestyle, manage chronic disease, avoid harmful substances, and seek early post-conception care. She added, 'In addition to physical well-being for women, we need to establish emotional well-being for women to proclaim these processes without controversy. Education and awareness enable women in their choice of when and how to disclose early signs of a miscarriage if they experience one, and how they may seek medical advice and services.' Dr Gandhali Deorukhkar, consultant in obstetrics and gynaecology at Wockhardt Hospitals, Mumbai Central, said, 'While not all miscarriages can be prevented, proactive prenatal care plays a critical role in reducing risks.' Dr Deorukhkar said, 'Starting folic acid at least three months before conception has been shown to decrease neural tube defects and support fetal development. Women should also get screened for hormonal imbalances, infections, and uterine abnormalities — especially if they've experienced prior losses. Regular ultrasounds and blood tests in the early weeks can help monitor the viability of the pregnancy.' She added that emotional support is equally important, as stress and anxiety can impact hormonal balance – and 'if a miscarriage does occur, remember that many women go on to have healthy pregnancies in the future with the right medicalguidance'. If you experience any concerning symptoms or have questions about your pregnancy, don't hesitate to reach out to your healthcare provider.
