Mohali police bust inter-state drugs racket, seize 14.37kg opium; 2 arrested
1 2 3 Mohali: The police have arrested two inter-state smugglers and recovered 14.37 kg of opium from their possession. The accused were intercepted while transporting the narcotics from Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh, to Tarn Taran using Mohali as a transit route. Acting on a tip-off, a police team from Lalru police station set up a blockade near Gholumajra bus stop on Chandigarh-Ambala highway. A Toyota Innova with an Uttarakhand registration number was stopped, leading to the arrest of 27-year-old Ranjodh Singh from Madar village (Khadoor Sahib, Tarn Taran) and 35-year-old Jasbir Singh from Madi village (Bhikhiwind, Tarn Taran). Police also recovered Rs 5,000 in cash, believed to be drug money. SP Manpreet Singh said the operation was part of a sustained campaign against narcotics. SHO Simran Singh and his team, while on patrol, received intelligence about the smuggling attempt. Upon interception, DSP Derabassi Naveenpal Singh Lahal reached the spot, and in his presence, two wax-sealed packets were recovered from a bag in the car. One packet contained 7.545 kg and the other 6.825 kg of opium. Ranjodh Singh was booked under the NDPS Act in 2021 at Jandiala Guru police station, Amritsar rural, for possession of 28 grams of heroin. Jasbir Singh was previously arrested in 2019 in Amritsar for possession of 4.8 kg of opium. This was their third trip transporting opium along the route. Ludhiana: Prithipal Singh hockey festival final on June 8
Olympian Prithipal Singh Hockey Festival began with matches and a tribute to the legendary player on his 42nd death anniversary at Jarkhar Stadium on Saturday evening. Organised by the Mata Sahib Kaur Sports Charitable Trust, the opening day saw matches in both junior and senior categories. In the junior category, Rana Academy Hoshiarpur defeated Ghawaddi School 5-3, while Ek Noor Academy Tehing edged out Amargarh Hockey Centre with a close 3-2 victory. In the senior matches, Kuldeep Singh Club Moga overpowered Amargarh Hockey Club with a 9-2 win. In the final league match of the day, Gill Club Ghawaddi defeated Young Club Utala 8-6 in a closely contested battle. Outstanding players were recognised for their performances. Dalvir Singh from Ghawaddi and Ranjodh Singh from Moga were named 'Heroes of the match' for their brilliant play. Advocate Harkamal Singh, inspector Balbir Singh Heer, professor Rajinder Singh from Khalsa College, sarpanch Sandeep Singh Jarkhar, former sarpanch Davinder Singh Dimpy, and others were present. Matches of the festival will continue every Saturday and Sunday, with grand finals in both senior and junior categories scheduled for June 8. The winning teams will be awarded cash prizes worth ₹2 lakh and trophies.
