Diamondbacks put catcher Gabriel Moreno on 10-day IL because of right hand contusion
TORONTO (AP) — The Arizona Diamondbacks put catcher Gabriel Moreno on the 10-day injured list Thursday because of a contusion on his right hand. The move is retroactive to June 16. Arizona selected catcher Aramis Garcia from Triple-A Reno. To make room on the 40-man roster, right-hander Christian Montes De Oca (back/elbow) was transferred to the 60-day IL. Outfielder Corbin Carroll was not in the starting lineup for Thursday's series finale against the Blue Jays. Carroll left Wednesday's 8-1 loss in the eighth inning after being hit on the left hand by a pitch. X-rays did not reveal a fracture. Manager Torey Lovullo said Carroll asked to play Thursday, but Lovullo preferred to rest the 2023 NL Rookie of the Year. Carroll is batting .255 with 20 home runs and 44 RBIs. Former Blue Jays outfielder Randal Grichuk started in right field for the Diamondbacks on Thursday. Moreno was scratched from the lineup Tuesday after injuring his hand during batting practice. He did not play Wednesday. Moreno is batting .270 with five home runs and 20 RBIs in 53 games. Now in his third season with the Diamondbacks, Moreno was acquired from Toronto following the 2022 season, along with outfielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr., in a trade that sent outfielder Daulton Varsho to the Blue Jays. ___ AP MLB:

Nationals use a 10-run first inning to beat the reeling Diamondbacks, 11-7
PHOENIX (AP) — Luis García Jr. had a double and three RBIs during a 10-run first inning for the Washington Nationals, who held on late to beat the reeling Arizona Diamondbacks 11-7 on Saturday night. Washington has won 11 of 15 games and scored at least nine runs in four straight games. Arizona has dropped nine of 10. The Nationals' first 11 batters reached base and they scored nine runs before the D-backs recorded an out, which was the second-most in the big leagues since 1961. The Boston Red Sox scored 10 runs before the Florida Marlins got an out in a game on June 27, 2003, according to Elias Sports. Arizona's Brandon Pfaadt (7-4) lasted just eight batters, giving up eight earned runs on six hits. He also hit two batters. The Nationals sent 16 batters to the plate in the first and it took 30 minutes for the D-backs to get three outs. Arizona rallied with two runs in the fourth and five more in the sixth. Randal Grichuk's two-run homer cut it to 11-7. He finished with three hits. Washington starter Michael Soroka (2-3) retired the first 11 batters he faced before Geraldo Perdomo hitting a looping single into right field in the fourth. Josh Naylor followed with a two-run homer. Soroka gave up four runs on six hits and a walk through 5 1/3 innings. He struck out three. Washington's C.J. Abrams was hit by a pitch three times. James Wood, Robert Hassell III, Keibert Ruiz and Daylen Lile all had two hits. Key moment Pfaadt recorded two strikes on Abrams — the game's leadoff hitter — before hitting him on the foot with a pitch, starting the 10-run avalanche. Key stat Pfaadt's ERA ballooned from 3.90 to 5.05. D-backs pitchers hit five batters. Up next The D-backs send RHP Corbin Burnes (3-2, 2.72 ERA) to the mound Sunday while the Nationals counter with LHP Mitchell Parker (4-4, 4.65). ___ AP MLB:

(AP Photo/Joe Puetz) ST. LOUIS (AP) — Jordan Walker had two hits and drove in three runs, rebounding from a critical fielding gaffe with an RBI single that lifted the St. Louis Cardinals to a 6-5 win Saturday over the Arizona Diamondbacks. After his failed sliding attempt to catch Josh Naylor's two-run triple in the eighth allowed Arizona to rally into the lead, Walker delivered the winning run with an RBI single off Justin Martinez (1-2) in the bottom half of the inning. Advertisement The Diamondbacks lost their fourth straight game. St. Louis has won 15 of 19. Geraldo Perdomo and Eugenio Suárez raced around to tie the game 4-4 when Naylor's line drive bounced in front of Walker and rolled to the wall. Naylor then scored when Grichuk's pop-up fell in shallow center for a double. Ryan Helsley (2-0) was credited with the win for a scoreless ninth. He struck out Suárez with runners on second and third to end the game. Matthew Liberatore allowed six hits and one run, on Grichuk's leadoff home run in the fifth. Liberatore struck out six Diamondbacks and didn't walk anyone, a hallmark of his strong start to 2025. Advertisement Arizona starter Merrill Kelly gave up four runs on six hits while striking out five. His only walk preceded Walker's two-dun double that ended his outing with no outs in the seventh. Key moment Making his first appearance after missing three weeks because of right shoulder inflammation, Martinez gave up Nolan Arenado's RBI groundout to tie it before Walker's two-out single. Key stat After earning a spot in the Cardinals rotation during spring training, the 25-year-old lefty Liberatore has allowed two runs or less in eight straight starts, giving up 11 runs in 47 innings over that stretch. Up next Arizona RHP Brandon Pfaadt (7-3, 3.81 ERA), who entered the weekend as the major league wins leader, takes on St. Louis RHP Sonny Gray (5-1, 4.02) in the series finale Sunday. ___ AP MLB:
