Jammu: Omar reviews delivery of essential services
Chief minister Omar Abdullah on Thursday chaired a high-level meeting at the civil secretariat here to review the delivery of essential services and supplies and the steps taken by the administration during the current summer season in Jammu division. During the meeting, Jammu divisional commissioner Ramesh Kumar briefed the CM and gave presentation on the functioning of different departments and their action plan for summer preparedness. It was informed that JPDCL has maintained sufficient buffer stock of transformers and also devised time-slots for power curtailment to prevent overload on grid stations. The functioning of Jal Shakti and Jammu municipal corporation was also discussed with regard to adequate supply of water tankers, water sprinklers, anti smog guns and proper maintenance of water coolers to provide relief to the citizens. Taking cognisance of the water scarcity issues in some newly populated areas, the CM directed Jammu MC commissioner and Jal Shakti department to provide relief to the residents immediately. He further directed for expediting the pace of work on water supply schemes nearing completion to alleviate such issues. The CM further reviewed the forest fire response mechanism and readiness of fire & emergency services to tackle any such situation. The CM was also apprised of preparedness of irrigation and flood control with regard to de-silting of irrigation canals and flood mitigation plan. Omar also took stock of the broad arrangements put in place for forthcoming Muharram and Amarnath Yatra. The divisional commissioner apprised the CM about the routes decided for Muharram along with other elaborate arrangements pertaining to power, water supply, health and other essential services for the people participating in Muharram processions across the division. He also apprised the CM on the ongoing preparations for Amarnath Yatra with detailed arrangements right from Lakhanpur- the gateway to Jammu Kashmir- to Lambar in Banihal, Ramban.

More than a month after the launch of Operation Sindoor, a two-day military civil liaison conference was held here to enhance synergy and deliberate on critical issues, including ongoing efforts to support the local population along the border areas, the Indian Army on Saturday said. The conference, held on June 12 and 13 at Satwari cantonment, was among others attended by General Officer Commanding, Tiger Division, Maj Gen Mukesh Bhanwala, and Divisional Commissioner, Jammu, Ramesh Kumar, said a defence spokesman. Operation Sindoor saw close coordination and integration between Tiger Division, para military forces and civil administration to counter the nefarious design of the adversary. The conference was organised to further enhance this synergy, he added. Under Operation Sindoor, the Indian armed forces carried out missile strikes on terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) during the intervening night of May 6 and 7 in retaliation to the Pahalgam terror attack that left 26 persons, mostly tourists, dead on April 22. The spokesman said that the high-level meeting brought together senior army officials and representatives from key government departments of Jammu division to discuss matters of strategic and civic importance. The conference served as a platform to deliberate on critical issues such as infrastructure development, civic-military synergy in the remote areas and the ongoing efforts to support the local populations along the border areas, he added. Maj Gen Bhanwala emphasised the importance of seamless collaboration between civil and military agencies. The divisional commissioner of Jammu during his address acknowledged the Indian Army's sustained efforts in humanitarian assistance and infrastructure support across the region. The discussions during the conference also covered the issues of road connectivity in border villages, border area tourism and welfare measures for ex-servicemen and their families, the spokesman said. The conference concluded with a reaffirmed commitment as a Whole of Nation Approach' towards peace, development and resilience in Jammu and Kashmir, he added.

The Health Department was directed to ensure availability of medicines, medical equipment, ambulances, and staff at the base camp and other key points. The Chief Engineer of the Public Works Department was asked to complete sentry posts recommended by CRPF and install langar sheds and german hangars. Commissioner of Jammu Municipal Corporation Devansh Yadav was told to deploy sanitation staff, install adequate toilets, and start desiltation of the nearby canal, the spokesperson added. May brings record rain, climate alert for Goa
Panaji: The month of May this year gave Goans a volatile mix of blistering heatwave-like conditions and torrential rain — both in the pre-monsoon and early monsoon phases. The early arrival of the southwest monsoon, which made landfall in Goa on May 26 — 12 days ahead of schedule — marked a rare meteorological event for the coastal state. Prior to the monsoon's onset, Goa was hit by a surge in the pre-monsoon showers, with a total of 462.3mm recorded till May 25. A single-day downpour on May 21 brought 139.5mm, 'pushing the pre-monsoon rainfall figure to nearly 900% above normal,' said meteorologist and retired National Institute of Oceanography chief scientist, Ramesh Kumar. 'Two weather systems played a critical role in this precipitation surge. On May 24 and 25, a depression in the Arabian Sea near the Goa coast acted as a catalyst for early monsoon currents,' he said. 'A deep depression over the Bay of Bengal on May 29 and 30 brought further monsoonal intensification.' As of May 30, the official monsoon rainfall total for Goa stands at 208mm, just four days into the season.
