Luxury cars registered in Puducherry face road tax scrutiny in Mys

Mysuru: Close on the heels of the seizure of five high-end cars for non-payment of road tax, luxury vehicles are under road tax scrutiny. Some who use high-end cars prefer to buy them in the Union Territory of Puducherry because of higher road tax in Karnataka, according to officials. As most high-end car users take out their vehicles late in the evening for a drive or when vehicle movement is less, regional transport authorities are planning a drive to verify the lifetime road tax paid receipts after dusk. The shortage of personnel has been impeding them from effectively conducting checks. Usually, high-end car buyers register their vehicles in the Union Territory of Puducherry as the road taxes are less when compared to Karnataka, officials said. Whereas in the state, lifetime road taxes collected are approximately 20% of the car's value, in Pondicherry it is cheaper as the lifetime road tax for vehicles above Rs 20 lakh is just over Rs 1 lakh, sources claimed. Assistant regional transport officer (ARTO) Ramachandra, who is holding additional charge as RTO, Mysuru West, said in Bengaluru the transport department regularly conducts checks, and on average four to five high-end cars are seized a day. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Perdagangkan CFD Emas dengan Broker Tepercaya IC Markets Mendaftar Undo However, in Mysuru, they seized five cars registered in Puducherry in two days. Four are seized and kept at the RTO office, while one is seized and kept in a police station. All these vehicle owners are residents of Mysuru and used the vehicles for more than a year, he stated. "We have a special team to keep an eye on such vehicles to verify tax paid receipts and would plan special drives after office hours to verify road tax paid receipts," the ARTO explained. An officer explained that they noticed many luxury car owners maintain a residence proof in Puducherry solely for vehicle registration purposes or may have business there but use the Pondicherry-registered vehicles in Karnataka. This practice leads to significant revenue loss for us. As tourists, they can visit Karnataka and return, but can't use outside registered vehicles beyond 12 months. The police estimates that dozens of high-end vehicles registered in Puducherry are being used in neighbouring states. According to a high-end car user, Karnataka has some 2,500 luxury cars of different brands from Rolls-Royce to Bentley, Lamborghini, Ferrari, Range Rover, Mercedes Benz, BMW, Audi, and Porsche. Sources claim many high-end vehicles, 15-years-old and more, banned in Delhi are used in Mysuru and Karnataka. Abhishek Hegde, managing director of Naksha Honda, said it is mandatory for any non-transport vehicle, registered outside Karnataka, being used in our state for more than a year, that the owner must pay lifetime road tax which is approximately 20% of the total ex-showroom value of the vehicle.

6 things to have on an empty stomach to control insulin resistance

Struggling with insulin resistance? All you need to do is make certain small changes in your morning routine. 'What you consume first thing in the morning influences blood sugar regulation and enhances your body's insulin response,' said Dr Praveen Ramachandra, consultant, endocrinology and human metabolism, SPARSH Hospital, Bangalore. Here are some practical, science-backed habits to consider: Fenugreek water Soaking a teaspoon of fenugreek seeds overnight and drinking the water in the morning may help reduce post-meal blood sugar spikes and improve insulin sensitivity. 'The soluble fibre in fenugreek slows glucose absorption, making it a beneficial addition for those managing insulin resistance,' shared Dr Ramachandra. Cinnamon water According to Dr Ramachandra, boiling a small piece of Ceylon cinnamon in water and consuming it warm can help improve glucose metabolism and enhance insulin signaling. 'Ceylon cinnamon is preferred over Cassia cinnamon, as the latter contains coumarin, which may be harmful in high doses,' shared Dr Ramachandra. Amla (Indian gooseberry) Amla is rich in vitamin C and polyphenols, which help reduce oxidative stress and inflammation—two key factors in insulin resistance. 'Consuming fresh amla or amla juice in the morning can support better glucose metabolism. The whole amla is preferred over just the juice, as it retains beneficial fibre,' said Dr Ramachandra. Turmeric water Mixing a pinch of turmeric in warm water and consuming it in the morning provides anti-inflammatory benefits. 'Since curcumin, the active compound in turmeric, has low bioavailability, adding a pinch of black pepper (piperine) significantly enhances absorption. This can help reduce inflammation and oxidative stress, which contribute to insulin resistance,' said Dr Ramachandra. Flaxseeds Flaxseeds are packed with fibre, omega-3 fatty acids (ALA), and lignans, which help slow carbohydrate absorption, reduce post-meal glucose spikes, and support insulin action. 'For better absorption, it is recommended to consume ground flaxseeds rather than whole or just soaked seeds,' said Dr Ramachandra. Soaked almonds Eating 4-6 soaked almonds in the morning provides healthy fats, protein, and magnesium, which play a role in blood sugar regulation, stressed Dr Ramachandra. 'Magnesium is essential for insulin function and glucose metabolism, while healthy fats help prevent post-meal glucose spikes,' said Dr Ramachandra. In addition to these morning habits, experts emphasise regular physical activity (especially resistance training), adequate sleep, and effective stress management are crucial in improving insulin sensitivity. 'A holistic approach combining nutrient-dense foods, exercise, and lifestyle modifications will have the most profound impact on long-term metabolic health,' said Dr Ramachandra. BJP seeks action against Puttur Urban Development Authority Chairman for comments on PM, ceasefire

A delegation of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), led by former Puttur MLA Sanjeev Matandoor, submitted a petition to Puttur Town police on May 14 seeking action against Puttur Urban Development Authority Chairperson Amala Ramachandra for alleged derogatory comments against Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The BJP delegation has objected to posts by Mr. Ramachandra on his Facebook account. On May 13, at 7.30 p.m., Mr. Ramachandra has posted an image carrying the words 'Ivaru Vishwa Guru alla Visha Guru' (he is not a world leader but a poisonous leader) with a caption 'Deshada Sahodaratege Sarvabhoumatege Karkotaka Visha' (A deadly poison to country's brotherhood and sovereignty). On May 13, at 9.10 a.m., Mr. Ramachandra had posted another image that had a statement: 'Doddannanige Talebaagi Karyacharane Nillisiddakke Jana Ugiyuttiddante Manki Baat Nalli U-Turn' (When people criticised ceasefire announcement after bowing head to the big brother, there is a u-turn in the mann ki baat), with a cartoon of Prime Minister holding a cut-out stating 'I am world leader'. Another post, also made on May 13, has a cartoon showing Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the feet of US President Donald Trump with the former accepting a ceasefire when the latter offers an option between arrest of (businessperson Gautam) Adani and ceasefire. The delegation sought action against Mr. Ramachandra claiming that the posts were derogatory to the Prime Minister and capable of causing unrest in the region. Dakshina Kannada Superintendent of Police N. Yatish said action will be taken based on legal opinion from the department of prosecution

Hear O, Mahatma, an experimental film by P.N. Ramachandra screened

Art Kanara Trust, Mangaluru arranged a special screening of Hear O, Mahatma, an experimental film directed by P.N. Ramachandra at the Kodialguthu Centre for Art and Culture on Saturday (May 3, 2025) here. The event drew a select gathering of artists, thinkers and film enthusiasts and was introduced by Subhas Chandra Basu, President of Art Kanara Trust. Mr. Ramachandra, a Mumbai-based filmmaker and a 1990 graduate of the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Pune, presented his 100-minute film, which was released in 2024. The film delves into the contradictions of contemporary society through the prism of Mahatma Gandhi's legacy, employing a hybrid narrative that blends documentary and fiction. It follows the intertwined stories of a conflicted filmmaker, a committed social reformer and a regressive politician—each portrayed as doppelgangers—to reflect the fractured spirit of the times. The work seeks to critique modern society's strained relationship with Gandhian ideals. Introducing the screening, Mr. Ramachandra remarked, 'The format includes a significant amount of personal footage, which has been experimented with using Artificial Intelligence. This is not the conventional documentary format that viewers may be familiar with.' A discussion followed the screening, during which the director engaged with the audience on various aspects of the film, including its experimental structure, socio-political undertones, the integration of AI and its accessibility to a wider audience.
