Four arrested for impersonation, unauthorised entry at Military college campus

In a significant security breach, four civilians, including one impersonating an Indian Air Force officer, gained unauthorised entry into the highly secured Military College of Electronics and Mechanical Engineering (MCEME) campus in Secunderabad on June to an official complaint filed by MCEME authorities with Trimulgherry Police Station, one of the suspects, Rajat Kumar Mishra, falsely claimed to be a Wing Commander of the Indian Air Force. He used a forged identity card to enter the premises through the MI Techno Chowk Gate at around 1:00 PM. He was accompanied by three others—one man and two group's movement raised suspicion when they reached the Jubilee Gate of the military facility and started taking photographs and recording videos. Acting promptly, the guards alerted the Provost Unit TASA and officials from the Southern Command Intelligence. The Quick Reaction Team (QRT) of MCEME swiftly apprehended all four individuals and handed them over to authorities for a joint investigation. The four individuals have been identified as Rakesh Kumar, Ashish Kumar, Aaliya Abbshi and Nagma Bano. The nature and intent behind their unauthorised entry, as well as the impersonation, are currently under investigation. Authorities have requested a First Information Report (FIR) be filed to initiate a full enquiry into the incident. The police have registered a case under multiple sections of the Indian Penal Code, including Section 419 (cheating by impersonation), Section 420 (Cheating), Section 468 (Forgery for the purpose of cheating) and Section 471 – using forged documents as genuine. 'Starlink isn't going to bring millions and millions of customers into the fold'

The Indian telecom sector is 'evolving' despite several challenges it is facing. It is in the middle of a transition from 4G to 5G, satellite communication is becoming a reality, and competition is getting more broad-based. Rakesh Kumar caught up with Minister of State for Communications Pemmasani Chandrasekhar to get an overall view of the sector. An excerpt: BSNL has been profitable for the last two consecutive quarters. How did you make that possible? There is a lot of work going on inside BSNL. We have installed close to 100,000 4G towers in the last 12 months, and around 70,000 of them are active now. All these towers are performing better. So, obviously, we are increasing the customer base. There is a component of that. There is also a component of spending control, and overall efficiency is being improved at BSNL. All these factors have culminated in profitability, but the profit is around Rs 250 crores. That's not our target; it's actually just a tipping point. If the 4G rollout goes according to our plan, ideally, we should be generating a lot more revenue and expanding our customer base. When are you going to stop BSNL subscriber churn? We are gaining subscribers every month. One major limitation is that BSNL only has 100,000 4G towers. If you look at Reliance and Airtel, they have over 500,000–600,000 towers. After completing installation of 100,000 4G towers, we are going to request approval from the Cabinet for another 100,000 towers. We are focusing on increasing cash flow. Once we boost the cash flow, we will inherently have the opportunity to install more 4G and 5G equipment. We are also monetizing BSNL's assets, which will provide additional funding. The government has already given licenses to Starlink and two other satellite players. When will the services start? Granting licenses is our responsibility. The rest is up to Starlink and when they decide to start. I am pretty sure they want to begin as quickly as possible, especially since their basic infrastructure has already been set up. However, it is important to remember that Starlink isn't going to bring millions and millions of customers into the fold. It will play a minor role compared to the rest of the telecom infrastructure. That's because it is expensive, and there will be speed issues. Satellite communication is important as a backup and for some rural areas, where entrepreneurs and others who need a stable and decent connection could benefit. In those areas—like maritime zones and other remote regions—satellite could be very helpful, but it's more of a complementary solution in the overall telecom ecosystem. There were complaints from telcos that satellite services will eat into their business in India. It won't be like that. It will be a bit more expensive compared to terrestrial networks. The speed of satellite internet is much slower than that of terrestrial networks. Besides, satellite internet is not intended for mobile services; it's only for internet service, at least for now. Satellite communication will function more as a backup rather than a primary service. So last year, all the telcos increased their tariffs. Are we expecting more increases this year? If you look at the overall cost, we are much, much cheaper compared to the rest of the world. Obviously, the companies have invested heavily in 5G, and now all these companies are publicly listed, so they have their own concerns regarding growth. But at the same time, if there is effective competition—whether it's Vodafone Idea or BSNL—pricing will naturally come back to a more normal level. The key here is to ensure at least three or four highly effective players remain in the market. There are questions about the quality of services provided by telcos in the country. We are taking a closer look at the quality of service in the country now. We used to monitor and report on a quarterly basis, but now we've changed it to monthly reports. Previously, we monitored at the cell tower (BTS) level. Now, each BTS has 12 cells, so we are monitoring at the cellular level. The intensity and depth of this quality of service monitoring have been revamped.

Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan: Paralympian Rakesh Kumar appointed as brand ambassador in Reasi district

Reasi district administration on Wednesday appointed Paralympian para-archer Rakesh Kumar as brand ambassador for Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan. Reasi deputy commissioner Nidhi Malik designated Paralympian para archer and Arjuna awardee Rakesh Kumar as the brand ambassador for the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan from Reasi district, said an official spokesperson. This initiative aims to harness the inspirational journey of Rakesh Kumar — an international athlete who hails from Reasi— and has brought immense pride to the nation through his achievements despite physical challenges, the spokesperson said, adding that his appointment is expected to encourage youth to pursue sports and healthy lifestyles while staying away from substance abuse, he said. After a spinal injury in 2010 confined Kumar to a wheelchair, he took up archery in 2017 and rapidly rose through the ranks. He won gold at the 2022 Asian Para Games and the 2023 World Para Archery Championships, and represented India at the Tokyo Paralympics. In 2024, he made history by winning a bronze medal at the Paris Paralympics—J&K's first-ever Olympic medal. For his achievements, he was honoured with the Arjuna Award in 2025. Nidhi Malik emphasised the importance of role models in shaping young minds and stated that Rakesh Kumar's life is a powerful message of resilience, discipline, and determination. She further noted that the district administration, in collaboration with the Reasi social welfare department, headed by DSWO Sachin Sharma, is committed to intensifying awareness campaigns, community engagement, and outreach programs as part of the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan (Drug-Free India Campaign). The 26-day-long campaign, which began on June 1, will continue until June 26, covering various parts of the district. Speaking on the occasion, Rakesh Kumar expressed his gratitude for the honour and pledged his full support to the cause.

Indian Oil quadrupled fuel supply for armed forces during Operation Sindoor: Senior official

By Shafali Nigam Port Blair (Andaman and Nicobar) [India], June 12 (ANI): Indian Oil ensured seamless fuel supply to the Indian armed forces during Operation Sindoor from Andaman and Nicobar Islands, which went up at least four times, said Rakesh Kumar, Chief Terminal Manager (CTM) of Indian Oil Corporation (IOC). 'During Operation Sindoor, the demand from defence has gone up at least four times, and we were there to supply the product just as I told you earlier. We positioned our vessels from Paradip and Haldia refineries and met their demands just in time,' Indian Oil Corporation CTM said. Mentioning the demand during Operation Sindoor, he said, 'In case of need, just like a few months back, at the demand of the Indian Navy, we positioned our vessels from Paradip refinery and Haldia refinery at a notice of just three days.' Indian Oil demonstrated its strategic preparedness and operational efficiency and played a pivotal role in ensuring uninterrupted fuel supply during Operation Sindoor, the official said, adding that despite a fourfold increase in fuel demand from defence establishments, the state-owned oil PSU successfully met requirements by mobilising vessels from its mainland refineries within days. 'We have a very high level of good coordination with defence, almost on a daily basis. Since they are taking products from us, they have requirements. We interact with them on a weekly basis, and we hold meetings with their supply department as well,' he said about coordination with defence and security agencies in fuel supply or infrastructure planning. During a field visit to the Indian Oil POL Terminal in Port Blair, organised by the Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas for the press, when asked if there are any protocols in case of an emergency situation, Kumar said, 'In case of need, just like a few months back, at the demand of the Indian Navy, we positioned our vessels from Paradip refinery and Haldia refinery at a notice of just three days.' 'We are at the smart terminal of Indian Oil. Here, we have a tanking of 27,000 KL. We are dealing with four products over here, which are petrol, diesel, low-sulphur HFHSD and HSD,' he added. In response to the questions on emergency protocols in place for fuel shortages or natural disasters like cyclones or tsunamis, he said, 'We have emergency protocols. Sufficient tankage is there. On average, we have 25 days of coverage for all the products.' He said the state-run oil major is planning to expand services or upgrade existing infrastructure in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. 'We have plans. This terminal is a 27 TKL terminal and a POL terminal. We have requested one more station and we are in an advanced stage of getting new land in Hope Town, where our bottling plant is situated,' he added. Speaking with ANI, V. Ranganathan, Chief General Manager from West Bengal State Office and Port Blair said, 'Port Blair is one of the unique locations where a lot of challenges are there with respect to logistics, as well as product availability.' ‘Intra-Family Discord': Allahabad HC Quashes Gangrape Case Citing Amicable Settlement

Last Updated: Court noted that the accused and the victim were close relatives, and the victim had voluntarily entered into a compromise without coercion. The Allahabad High Court recently quashed a gang-rape case registered against a man accused of assaulting his sister-in-law, citing an amicable settlement between the parties. A complaint was filed in 2015 at Didauli Police Station in Amroha district, wherein Rakesh alias Rakesh Kumar was booked under Sections 452, 376(D), and 506 of the Indian Penal Code—charges relating to house trespass, gang rape, and criminal intimidation. The complainant, who is the accused's bhabhi (sister-in-law), later approached the court supporting an application under Section 482 CrPC to quash the case, stating that the dispute originated from family discord and had been resolved through mutual understanding. A joint affidavit recording the compromise was submitted. The bench of Justice Vinod Diwakar noted that although allegations under Section 376(D) were of a grave and non-compoundable nature, the circumstances of the case did not warrant the continuation of prosecution. Court observed that the relationship between the accused and the victim, as well as the voluntary nature of the compromise, made it an exceptional matter warranting judicial intervention. 'The victim has consciously, willingly, and without any coercion entered into the compromise. In such circumstances, continuing the prosecution would not advance the cause of justice and would amount to an abuse of the process of law," the court held. Importantly, the judgment cited precedents laid down by the Supreme Court in Gian Singh v. State of Punjab and Narinder Singh v. State of Punjab, wherein courts were permitted to quash proceedings of personal nature to prevent undue hardship and protracted litigation. While underscoring that justice should serve both individual and societal interests, the court took the view that no useful purpose would be served by allowing the trial to continue. 'The victim is close family members of the applicant, and the genesis of the dispute appears to be an intra-family discord rather than a criminal act impacting society at large and public morality," the judge observed. The court thus quashed the chargesheet dated May 17, 2015, the cognizance order of August 13, 2015, and all proceedings in the 2016 sessional trial pending before the Fast Track Court-I, Amroha.
